Galwiji Homestead - Spacious Country Accommodation

Bedrooms 6
Space 91 m²
Property type farmhouse
Minimum Stay 1 - 3 nights

About the property

Peace and quiet in a beautiful rural setting

In our family for 4 generations, the homestead on our property Galwiji (made up by combining the names of 4 brothers Gordon, Alan, William and Jim) will give you a delightful taste of Australian rural life.

It's spacious (25 squares) - there are beds for 12, extra room for 3 couples in our brand new eco-house, and even a lawn for camping if your group's a bit bigger and you want to rough it a bit :) It's also very comfortable for small groups or even just a couple on a romantic getaway.

There may not be many recent reviews for Galwiji on as we source our bookings from a number of different websites, including our own. However, every review left for Galwiji is mimiced on a site you may know that has the words 'trip' and 'advisor' in its name :)

We guarantee to beat any price you will find on any internet site by 5% if you come directly to us via our own site (which can be found by putting our name, Galwiji Homestead, into any internet search engine - we currently come up third in the search results). You will also find our complete terms and conditions on that site.

8 minutes' drive to shops, 15 minutes' to Sovereign Hill, 20 minutes' to the centre of Ballarat, 1 hour to Geelong and Avalon Airport and 75 minutes to Melbourne Airport (Google Maps says 1 hour 40, but we know a back way :)

There's ample parking. Internet is available for a small charge, but mobile phone reception is excellent (due to the proximity of Mount Buninyong) and the sims on our iPads work well. 3G Reception is clear on the Telstra and Optus' networks and improving all the time on Vodafone.

Mostly, we just love Galwiji for the peace. A gentle breeze, broken only by the occasional baa-ing of sheep and the twittering of birds. The farm is home to various animals from time to time, and if they're about, you may be able to go and greet them (they've had plenty of human contact).

The range of bird life is extraordinary and the many different calls are worth sitting quietly for a while to hear. We had an ornithologist visit, and he was able to catalogue 40 species!

If you want to break the solace, there's a recently-rebuilt 1899 piano and a nylon-string guitar.

There are many kids' (and adults') board games, table soccer and table tennis indoors, while outdoor treats include a large oak tree with seats underneath (in the middle of the sprawling garden), an outdoor quiz, yabby (freshwater crayfish) fishing and a 200 acre tree farm (a.k.a. a forest!), not to mention endless open spaces to run around in.

The house consists of 1 master bedroom with ensuite, 2 other queen bedrooms, another bedroom with 2 single beds and a set of bunks (two single beds, one above the other), another bedroom with a king single bed, all the normal amenity rooms (t.v. / lounge / dining area / kitchen and laundry), 2 additional bathrooms, (one newly accessibly refurbished with shower, basin and toilet in the one room and the other with an enormous bath) and lastly a very large family room with sofa bed sleeping for 3 (1 x single and 1 x queen), table tennis / table soccer / lounges / chairs and a large slow-combustion wood heater.

As far as amenities are concerned, Galwiji is fully self-contained, and then some. It has a full kitchen with a dishwasher, toaster, kettle, large microwave oven, large fridge, urn, rice cooker, large flat grill, sandwich maker, electric mixer and coffee machine. Our Weber Kettle BBQ and 4 burner gas barbecue on our brand new extended BBQ deck provide an opportunity to grill outdoors if you desire. There is a separate 2 burner BBQ if you really need to get some quick tucker going.

There's a large flat screen TV with DVD player, and a radio, as well as important appliances such as a front-loading washing machine, an ironing board and a hair dryer in each of the 3 bathrooms. The games room has a second smaller wall-mounted flat screen TV with DVD player.

For a really special evening, a telescope is available, because the stars at Galwiji are a - may - zing!

It's quite an environmentally-friendly property too. Apart from the 200+ acre tree farm (we're growing Sugar Gums), most of our electricity is provided by solar panels, our hot water is generated by a very efficient heat pump and all of our water comes from the sky. With that in mind, we provide you with a large external clothesline, and some freestanding drying racks. Unless it's mid-winter, it does also limit your ability to do water-intensive activities, but if you'd like to bring a blow-up pool or similar, it may be possible to fill it from the nearby dam, so please ask!

Your hosts, Ann & Bill, Malcolm and Angus are seasoned travellers. Ann and Malcolm are fluent in German and French and Angus dabbles in German.

The property is non-smoking (fire danger). Sorry, no pets.

Apologies for the high cleaning fee. When you see the size of the house, you'll understand why - it's about a 4 hour job!

Linen is not included in our tariff. You can bring your own linen (at a minimum each bed requires a flat sheet, fitted sheet and a pillow case) or alternatively, at a cost of $30/person, we are more than happy to provide it.

There are other items not included in the basic fee, but you can add them after the booking has been made. Heating, late departure and internet you are welcome to upgrade your stay with.

P.S. The site is handicap accessible (the house and grounds are fairly flat, with 'made' pathways and we have a designated accessible entrance and bathroom). We've had several groups of wheelchair-bound guests enjoy the facilities.

P.P.S. For the full terms and conditions of a stay, look up the terms and conditions tab on our website (which you can find by putting our property name into any internet search engine)

P.P.P.S. We've just recorded a 2 minute video tour of Galwiji. Look us up on you tube :)

Peace, fresh air and tranquility in the countryside: what more could you ask for?

  • 5 of 5

A spacious country farmhouse close to Ballarat, and an easy drive from Melbourne: well equipped with all modern appliances and plenty to keep you entertained. You will get a taste of farm life, fresh air, wildlife, the most breathtaking night skies to view the Milky way, hills to watch spectacular sunsets from, comfy beds, wood fires...hang on, I don't want to make it sound TOO good or else you might take our spot next time! Seriously though, stay at Galwiji and you are in for a wonderful experience!

Comfortable and spacious

  • 5 of 5

Property was very accessible and easy to find. Our group of 15 family members were comfortably accommodated. Indoor games area and outdoor space were perfect for the young children. A lovely, quiet environment. Little town of Buninyong is nearby and handy for getting provisions.

Owner's Response: Dear Brian, thank you for such a lovely review. We are delighted that we were able to accommodate your wife and her wheelchair. A lot of time and effort has gone into making Galwiji wheelchair accessible, so it's really satisfying to know that it met your needs. Kind Regards. Great Weekend Place for our Youth Camp

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Galwiji with our Youth Group for a weekend in May. I was a spacious, cozy and warm house. There was enough beds for all the kids plus having multiple bathrooms made shower time a breeze! We loved having the wood fires and games room! Would definitely recommend Galwiji if you are after a peaceful and relaxing break!

So glad you enjoyed the first of what will hopefully be heaps of visits. Kind regards. Malcolm Pryor, Operations Manager, Galwiji Homestead.

Sovereign Hill

Mt Buninyong Winery Restaurant & Wood Fired Pizza is a near neighbour (210 Platts Rd., Scotsburn) and offers, as the name suggests, a winery and cellar door experience (they boast Australia’s finest range of fortified wines) and tasty wood-fired pizza. Refer for more information.

The local township of Buninyong (population 3000) is an 8 minute drive from Galwiji Homestead and offers:

A good range of the basic necessities (a medium-sized supermarket with bottle shop, a pharmacy and a petrol station)

a range of eating and drinking options including a take-away pizza shop, a bakery, several cafes and sit-down dining at the golf club (Thursdays) and at the Crown Hotel

The city of Ballarat (population 100,000, refer is a 25 minute drive from Galiwji Homestead and has a wide range of activities and shopping possibilities:

The most popular tourist attractions in Ballarat include Sovereign Hill, Kryal Castle and Ballarat Wildlife Park

Shopping options are about as diverse as any other city this size with major department stores such as Target, Big W, K-Mart and Myer as well as an open air mall (Bridge Mall)

Geelong (population c.200,000) is less than an hour’s drive from Galwiji Homestead. Only a further 15 minutes onward is the start of a group of excellent beaches (the first being Torquay).

The closest supermarket is at Buninyong – an 8 min. drive from Galwiji Homestead. Foodworks at Buninyong (320 Learmonth St, Buninyong) provides a good range of groceries, fresh fruit and vegetables, plus a well-stocked deli and bottle shop. It’s open 7 days a week, Mon.-Sat. 7.30am-7.30pm, Sun. 9am-7.30pm. Ph: (03) 5341 3263.

Next door to the Foodworks (316 Learmonth St, Buninyong) is Buninyong’ pharmacy (branded ‘UFS Dispensary’) which is open Mon.-Fri., 9am-6pm and Saturday 9am-12pm. Ph: (03) 5341 2121.

We have personally attended the Pig and Goose restaurant in Warrenheip St. The meals are quite fancy and a little on the expensive side, but the service is good and the quality is excellent, so it’s the right place for a special occasion. They also serve coffee 🙂 Tel. 53418029. Open Mon. – Thu. 9-4 and Fri. – Sat. 9-late.

The Red Door Pizzeria offers Woodfired Pizza, both takeaway and sit-down. There’s live Music on Saturdays. Open 5pm – late, Wed.-Sun.

Closer still to the roundabout is Buninyong Bakehouse, offering a reasonable range of bread, cakes, pies and sit down light lunches. Open 7 days a week: Mon.- Fri. 7:30am-6pm, Sat. 7am-5pm, Sun. 7am-4pm. Ph: (03) 5341 2199.

Petrol Station

Around the corner (501 Warrenheip St Buninyong) is a BP service station. While traditionally, the petrol prices are not great (though only slightly more than in Ballarat), it’s still handy to have the service station there if you’re running low.

And we all know that if you don’t support the little guys, they go out of business and all you’re left with is the big guys controlling the market 😛

The service station is a good place to pick up a range of newspapers and magazines and is open from 5am-9:30pm Mon-Sat and 6am-9:30pm on Sundays. Ph: (03) 5341 2154.

Bottle Shop / Pub

Across the road from the Petrol Station is the pub (402 Learmonth St). It offers good food (if a little pricey) in an historic but echoey environment (lots of wood floors and panelling). Established in 1842, the Crown Hotel was the first inland hotel in Victoria to be issued with a license and is the oldest continually licensed hotel in Regional Victoria. Ph: (03) 5341 3402

There’s Espresso Depot which by reputation makes the best coffee in Buninyong. The Depot offers a range of snacks and sells sourdough bread. It’s on 5341 2677 and is open 7-5 daily.

Maggie and Kate (next to the Post Office) 5341 2208 is very small but serves very good coffee and light snacks. Open Mon.-Fri. 7-3, Sat. 8-3 Closed Sun.

The Old Bluestone Cafe serves coffee, light lunches. Tel. 5341 8166. It’s open Tue.-Sat. 9-4, Sun. 8-5, Mon. closed.

For those of us for whom coffee is not the main event, there’s Chocolatto Coffee, where fine chocolates are sold. Tel. 53418333. It’s open Mon. – Fri. 8-5, Sat. 9-5 and Sun. 10-5

Local markets

There is a craft market in Buninyong on the first Sunday of each month, and a farmers’ market on the third Saturday.

Other shopping options

If you’ve exhausted Buninyong for shopping options, the next place to head is into Ballarat. Head North-West on the Midland Highway for about 10 minutes until you hit Sebastopol which offers a Safeway (soon to be Woolworths), Coles, Aldi and numerous other shops. Head a further 10 min.s into Ballarat and you’ll hit Sturt St, probably the main shopping street in Ballarat. At the Eastern end of Sturt street is Bridge Mall offering an outdoor mall experience with a large range of shops.
