Overview

Photos and Description of this Santa Maria di Licodia holiday farmhouse

Private pool, garden, budget, 6 sleeps, view on Mount Etna, local products, wifi

A rural road brings you to this whitewashed house, which is sharply contrasted by the bright green of the wild Sicilian vegetation. The landscape surrounding the accommodation is characterised by antique lava flows and thousands of prickly pear cacti, called “ficodindia”. The pool is in use from the 15th of April to 30 October. The size of the pool is 5 x 8 meter and 1 up to 2 meters deep.

Rustico Mendolito consists of a spacious kitchen, two bathrooms and an enormous living-room (about 80sq. metres), which, thanks to two mezzanines, functions also as a bedroom. This system therefore offers three double bed spaces in the same room.

Due to the presence of two large fireplaces, the accommodation lends itself for use in both autumn and winter. Many people are unaware that Etna is a popular skiing resort in the winter months.

On request it is possible to use WiFi. The price is 10 Euro per week.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Very, very good!!!

  • 5 of 5

This place is real value for your money. It is in an isolated spot, so very quite, but not more then 5-10 min away from a big supermarkt and the nearest town. The surroundings is astounding: a beautiful view on the etna from the beautifully situated pool, surrounded by almondtrees that had many almonds when we were there ( in may 2015 ). The garden around the house is supers. The house is just lovely, it is old but very well renovated, there is airco, television, a well equiped kitchen, adequate sanitary. If you have bad eyesight or you have a handicap, then consider another place though, since the Floor has many steps, you have to watch where you are going a bit. The lovely couple that owns this place bakjes pizza for you in the pizza-oven attached to the house, all night for just 50eur. They are so friendly and hospitable, you will not regret booking this place.

Beautiful location

  • 4 of 5

We needed a relaxing place to stay for our first (of three) weeks in Sicily and Rustico Mendolito provided exactly that. The setting is fantastic, the views of Etna from the swimming pool, and the immaculately kept gardens added to the experience. The pool is a real asset and we spent a lot of time in it. The accommodation is basic ("rustic") but adequate.

We had problems finding the meeting point with the keyholder on our arrival - we were looking for an actual supermarket but later it transpired that it was at the gate of a redundant supermarket. Added to the delay caused by Europcar in sorting out our pre-booked hire car we were 2 hours late arriving by which time all the shops had closed, and we spent the first night without any food. The keyholder was very patient in waiting for us and we eventually met up at the rail station in the local town which was the only meeting point that we could find.

The other problem we had were the starving dogs from the apparently abandonded villa nearby - as another reviewer has noted, the keyholder was very helpful in attempting to resolve that problem but with only limited success. Take great care with the approach road - it is steep and rocky and does need improving.

Wonderful weeks in a wonderful place

  • 4 of 5

We absolutely loved this house, with the pool and the stunning view over Etna and, as it felt, the rest of Sicily.

A warm welcome after a long drive from Palermo made oss feel like home at once.

The acienda provided us with everything we needed and we were most satisfied just "hanging out" on the premises most of the time.

There were three dogs that accompanied us, and they could get a bit annoying. (But the owner made several attempts to help us solve this problem since we have kids that are a bit afraid...)

The big spacious room was perfect for us, and we had no problems sleeping all in the same room, thanks to the loft beds.

When we were there, the garden was much more green than in the pictures on the site, so it was even more beautiful than expected!

We can warmly recommend this place!

Thank you very much Michaela and Pippo, for taking so good care of us and the lovely acienda!

Nice and Quiet

  • 4 of 5

This is a very authentic spot. The little villages in the neighbourhood are not spectacular, but you have a great view at the Etna and you can make nice day trips. The house itself is spacious but there are no separate bedrooms. For us no problem at all! We enjoyed our stay. The garden and swimmingpool are very nice situated and it is very quiet.

We were welcomed warmly and immediately felt at home.

Mendolito is an excellent base from which to explore the eastern part of Sicily. The villages of Etna, such as Adrano, Bronte and Randazzo, are famous for their ancient lava flows, the architecture of their seventeenth century churches, their delicious local produce and the hospitality of the villagers. Situated 700 metres above sea level, they are a favourite retreat of the city dwellers who, in summer are in search of cool, fresh air, while in winter are in search of snow for skiing. Mendolito is around 15 kilometers from the coast. The “Playa”, an endless sandy beach is found to the south of Catania while beautiful bathing areas and charming fishing villages, such as Aci Trezza and Santa Maria La Scala (Acireale) are located north of Catania. Taormina and Siracusa are about an hour’s drive away.

The Etnaean towns, Adrano, Paternò and Bronte are found on the eastern side of Etna, they are located close to Santa Maria di Licodia and are renowned for their Norman castles.

Other Activities: Excursions to Mount Etna, the biggest volcano of Europa

Skiing on a volcano!: Mendolito is an excellent base from which to explore the eastern part of Sicily. The villages of Etna, such as Belpasso, Adrano, Randazzo and Castiglione di Sicilia, are famous for their ancient lava flows, the architecture of their seventeenth century churches, their delicious local produce and the hospitality of the villagers. Situated 700 metres above sea level, they are a favourite retreat of the city dwellers who, in summer are in search of cool, fresh air, while in winter are in search of snow for skiing. Few people are aware that Etna is a popular location for skiers in winter. On some glorious days in winter, it’s even possible to ski the frozen slopes in the morning enjoying a wonderful panoramic view of the Mediterranean, and then, the same afternoon, go and sunbathe on the beaches below!
