Fireplace firewood is provided FREE for 2 fireplaces (one in kitchen and other in greatroom). Fire ring firewood (pine) is often stacked near fire ring, but is NOT guaranteed. We are unable to restock fire ring wood between all guest stays, but it may be collected in nearby Tonto National Forest for 'small camp fires for free'. Please Do Not burn fireplace wood in the fire ring. It is expensive hard wood (pecan, oak, aspen, and alligator juniper) so it will burn hot and not soot up chimneys. We have 2 ceramic heaters. One on each floor. Feel free to place them where you want. (They use much less electricity than baseboard heat.) When you arrive at cabin, if the ceramic heaters are not enough, please turn on baseboard heaters until you have time to light fireplaces. There is one located in bathroom and Bear room downstairs and a thermostat at top of stairs on the left side of wall for the living room. There is one in the Elk room too. Also, the fireplace dampers/flutes are closed. Before starting fires please look up and pull the black bar forward to you to open so fire smoke goes up chimney. If one fireplace is not in use keep that damper closed so smoke from the other fireplace doesn't reenter home because the chimney stacks are next to each other. Lots of free firewood is behind cabin and next to driveway (oak, aspen, pecan, alligator juniper). From our and other guests it is best to place firewood as far back from front as possible to encourage smoke up flute and when first lighting it to heat up the chimney stack with a firestarter stick (not able to keep firestarter log/sticks stocked at cabin. Please bring. Have long matches though). These are just tricks you may already know. When the fire is out its best to close flute as soon as possible, because when the chimney stack cools down it can drive cold smoky air in. If that happens, just open the windows and run the ceiling fans.
If it is misused, we will not be able to continue offering it free for the fireplaces or may be forced to raise rates. Thank you Very Much.
Football Season: Direct TV NFL Sunday Ticket: For those of you who want to get away, but can't stand the thought of missing a game in real time, we have Direct TV Sunday Ticket. Information for all NFL Sunday Tickets on Direct TV:
If a game the viewer wishes to watch is blacked out in their home market because it's not sold out, the game remains blacked out on NFL Sunday Ticket. Any other game televised locally is also blacked out. (viewers must watch them instead on the local FOX or CBS affiliates) See Channel Guide in Guest Handbook at Cabin Please. Games joined or switched away from in progress usually have their blackout status altered immediately.
Fishing licenses can be purchased at the camping, hunting, outdoor sports counter of Walmart in Payson. Even in the winter, there is hold over trout at the 1st and 2nd wet bridges. They are the smarter ones that lasted thru the angler season so they are spooky, but if you catch one you are the master! A honey hole document for fishing hot spots will be sent with directions and cabin keyless entry code after payment is made in full a day prior to stay.
The East Verde River TROUT STOCKING SCHEDULE started April 2nd, 2012 and continues weekly through August 29th, 2012 for the summer season by the AZ Game and Fish Department. See stocking schedule at:
From Hwy 87, take a right onto Houston Mesa Road. It's 10 miles to cabin. At 6.9 miles, the first East Verde River access (parking area on right) is just beyond the bridge overpass has some great shallow swimming holes friendly to kids, dogs. It is a fish and game trout stocking spot. At 7.5 miles the next parking area on right is called Waterwheel which is VERY scenic with hiking trails and waterfalls. It has 3 sites stocked by fish and game. At 8.1 miles just after crossing the first wet bridge is a parking area called 2nd crossing on left which has great fishing areas (stocked by fish and game), hiking trail (see marker directly across the road by river). At 8.8 miles, the next parking area is on left beyond the 2nd wet bridge (also a fish stocking spot). Continue up curved hill and enter Whispering Pines Subdivision (on right side). The Left side is still Tonto Forest. The 3rd wet bridge crossing on scott's drive is only another mile and .5 miles from the cabin. It is a great spot to plant some lawn chairs (under stairs at cabin) and soak you feet, play, etc...
Upstream from cabin (take a right on Houston Mesa Rd from cabin and bear left at the road split). It is called Washington Park and is another river access with a well known great hiking trail called Highline Trail (5 miles from cabin). There are other river access points upstream on the dirt control road toward Hwy 260 (instead of bearing left toward Washington Park, cross bridge on right and bear left). This heads to Tonto Creek and fish hatchery, camping areas, etc... all part of Tonto Forest.
Reminder: Please check outlets for any plugs, chargers, cords for your portable devises. 1 out of 4 guests leave one behind which we return as quickly as possible, but it still takes a week (start to finish).

Location! It's my dream and passion to be outdoors fishing, hunting, hiking, relaxing with family and getting out of the desert heat:) It is at 5,300 ft elevation in the cool pines with mountain mogollon rim nearby, forestry all around and the East Verde River across the street with the sound of the falls while sitting out on the deck. Stars are so bright at night. Elk graze in the meadow next to the property. Its only a 10 mile scenic drive thru 3 wet bridges NE of Payson where restaurants, shopping, movies & Hospital are. Nature close to convenience.

Thank you so much for letting us stay in your wonderful cabin. It was so nice being up here in beautiful Payson. This home is so perfect. It’s so homey and comfy. We felt at such ease. Our kids are: Jayde 8, and Jude 4. You would have thought it was Christmas upstairs with all of the toys. Our 4 year old especially went nuts. He brought the 3 little Diego toys with us to town every time. He says we definitely have to come back here next time! Our daughter also had a blast with the toys and her doll from home slept in the crib. It was so nice having the washer and dryer so I could keep up with all of the dirt and not have to drag home bags of dirty clothes. There was only a small amount of detergent to start with, so we bought a replacement. We made s'mores both nights, hiked up and down the rivers, and swung on the hammock. So relaxing! We ate breakfast this morning at the Beeline Café. It was very delicious. Our daughter would recommend the French toast! We ate at Macky’s grill on our first night. One the outside it is very plain and restaurant typical but far from it on the inside- the food was Delicious! The New York Philly Cheese steak and OOey Gooey Burger were very good and highly recommended by my husband and I. Other than that we did cook in and I found everything that I needed- Thank you. We went antiquing a little at a couple places, Kountry Chicks Boutique- which was very cute and reasonable and the fenced in antique store and boutique right in town. The antique store was amazing but packed wit goodies which was a little nerve wrecking with the kids. It was a “hands in pockets” trip. The BBQ/ candle lighter was stepped on outside (sorry) so ya will need a new one. Thanks you so much! Melissa (Peoria, AZ)
p.s. we loved the Smokey Bear and little Smokey Bear!
Hi my name is Jayde and I had a good time at your cabin. My favorite places was the creek and my favorite thing to do was make s’mores and eat them. We shopped down town payson. The only animal we saw was a squirrel walking on the telephone wire. Thank you for letting us stay for 2 days.
We just returned home from a two night stay at this cabin. It was FABULOUS!!!! The cabin is extremely clean, well-furnished, and well-maintained. It had everything we needed in the kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms and outside deck. It is nicely decorated and we were very comfortable. The cabin is better than as described in the website posting. It is a BEAUTIFUL property!!!
Working with the owners was easy and a pleasant experience. They were available to answer questions during our stay. And, our deposit was promptly returned at the end of our stay.
We met several of the neighbors and everyone was friendly and helpful. It was a fun couple of days!! We absolutely will be returning to stay at this cabin. Soon!!!
Perfect cabin for a large family! Secluded location...yet close enough to stores, ski resort and restaurants. Everything you need for your family (and fur babies) to enjoy a home away from home including a crib and highchair and dog crates of all sizes! Bear room is super cool for kids. Loft and plenty of toys and games to play! Everything you need to make delicious meals and a nice size TV to watch football! Would absolutely rent again! Wouldn't even consider any other cabin! Owners are very informative!
This place was a great place to stay. The owners are very accommodating and will do their best to meet your individual needs. They are very responsive and get back with you right away if you have any questions or requests. The home was clean and well-maintained. The listing description is accurate but you should note that the owners no longer provide firewood for the indoor fireplaces. That's not a big deal just remember to pick up some firewood if you would like to use the fireplace. We stayed here over the new years weekend. It was rainy and cold but we stayed nice and toasty with the two fireplaces and the various heaters placed throughout the home. We had three small children with us and this place was perfect for them. There are a lot of toys and Netflix to keep them entertained which was a god send since we stayed inside a lot because it was raining. There are also games for the adults. All of us stayed fully entertained while being stuck indoors. The kitchen is fully stocked with whatever cookware and utensils you may need. We easily cooked breakfast and dinner. The only thing I would suggest is bringing some extra spices if you use a lot of spices when you cook. There were the basics like salt and pepper and other odd end spices but no garlic or onion powder. Things like that you should probably bring with you. We didn't get out much because of the rain but there are lots of areas to relax and explore outdoors nearby. We really want to come back in the summer to check out some of these areas. I hate to let the "cat out of the bag" on this place but the owners deserve a good review. I would definitely recommend staying here. Good job Charlie and Wendy. This place gets an A+.
Was perfect for our family get away for Thanksgiving! Thank you so much for sharing your cabin with us!
The cabin is well equipped with everything that you want to do; whether it is to cook, fish, spend time in playing games, watching TV. It was clean and well maintained. We had a wonderful time with friends in this cabin away from the city. It was fun to cook and barbecue. There are hiking spots close by which we explored. The cabin itself has a cozy feeling with all the decorations and the collectibles around. Although there was hardly any WiFi available nor any phone network, due to which Netflix became inaccessible, we could do without it for the weekend. The landline phone was not working to call up the owners. Apart from this complaint, we got a much required break from our daily routine work. We can definitely recommend this cabin for a getaway. :)
We really enjoyed staying at this property. We planned on staying for 4 nights but we're having so much-fun we extended it another day. Very quiet neighborhood. Weather was perfect. The owners were very accommodating and very quick responses when I had questions. Had a fire upstairs every evening listening to Pandora and on our final night we had a fire and watched The Cubbies when The World Series, very exciting! We will be going back someday.
