Notes:
Auburn, the southern gateway to the Clare Valley, is rich in history and built heritage. As early as 1839, in South Australia’s infancy as a colony, pioneers grazed sheep and cattle in the district. When established in 1849, the township was named Tateham’s Waterhole, after the first settler, William ‘Billy’ Tateham, who, reputedly, lived in a dugout on the side of the River Wakefield. In 1856, it was renamed after the Irish town of Auburn. With the discovery of copper at Burra to the north-east, Auburn flourished as a resting place for the ‘bullockies’ and ‘muleteers’, the men responsible for carting copper ore from the mines at Burra to the gulf at Port Henry (now Port Wakefield). The township retains much of its charm as well as its original stone buildings, many of which are listed on the National Trust, State Heritage and National Estate Registers. A number of these buildings have been converted into heritage-style accommodation and outlets catering for locals and visitors alike

So comfortable

  • 5 of 5

I had to stay somewhere for work and Lyreen's was just so comfortable, my lovely hosts welcomed me and showed me how everything worked and have decked out the apartment in everything I could need. The toiletries were divine, think I will start using them myself. I am definitely staying again next time I have to work in the area.

Clare Valley Wineries

Escape to the charmingly secluded Clare Valley and disappear into a weekend of intimate discovery.

Hide away in a quaint little bed and breakfast or venture out to explore the rolling countryside by bike.

Indulge in delicious local food and wine in the heart of Australian Riesling country.

Wineries date back to the 1850s and international wine judges continue to rate the Rieslings

and Shiraz as among the best in the world. Australian wine writer James Halliday said, ‘Unlocking

the secrets of the Clare Valley is a pastime open to all who visit this most beautiful part of Australia.’

The Clare Valley has more than 30 cellar doors to visit, and a plethora of wineries which sit

along a narrow 40km corridor between Auburn and Clare. A bike trail, aptly named the Riesling Trail,

follows this corridor as it crisscrosses the Clare Valley through vineyards and wineries, scattered

between each town and village.
