About the property

Large solid old brick home (235 m2 house and 64 m2 garage) with a resort-style salt water swimming pool and two bathrooms located on 1200m2 of land between the spectacular Silver Sands Beach and the Aldinga Scrub Conservation Park. Your holiday home among the gum trees!

Scrubtide is perfect for two families, multi-generational family travel, family reunions and family and friends coming to the area to attend a wedding because it has four bedrooms, two bathrooms and two well separated sleeping areas (see floor plan). Two rooms are furnished with queen sized beds, one of them has an ensuite. One room is furnished as a dedicated kids room and contains a VW bus-shaped bunk bed and a single bed. Another room has two single beds. Two more single beds are in a separate secton of the lounge room (no door).

Note that this is an old house, not a new premium property. All the furniture is new (early 2014) and we have undertaken some major renovations since 2014 (new bathrooms, new roof, new ceilings throughout, new downlights, new ducted airconditioning, new garage doors).

We are happy to accommodate large groups for genuine reasons, such as attending someone's wedding and looking for reasonably priced accommodation for family reunions. We cannot accommodate large groups of adults who will be having parties. Parties disturb neighbours and are strictly prohibited. Scrubtide is perfect for couples, families and groups of friends who would like to enjoy the peace and quiet of the Scrub.

We do not provide linen, towels and tea towels by default, but if you are coming from far away and cannot bring your own, we can organise this for you. Please ask about this before you lock the booking in.

If there is a problem (for example: you do not know how to operate the garage doors or you find that something critical, such as the dishwasher, does not work), please CALL (not not text or email) our builder immediately. He lives nearby, knows the house inside out and will be able to help you. You will receive his phone number with the final instructions about one week before your arrival.

- Explore the beauty, wines and produce of the Mc Laren Vale region

- Enjoy spectacular views with dinner at the Star of Greece or the Victory Hotel

- Shop at the Aldinga Central Shopping Centre (8 minutes drive)

- Shop, wine and dine in downtown McLaren Vale (15 minutes drive)

- Admire the old buildings in the historic township of Willunga and - on Saturdays - shop at the Willunga Farmers Market (15 minutes drive)

- Ride the horse drawn tram over the bridge at Victor Harbor (40 minutes drive)

- Go to a museum in Adelaide (45 minutes drive)

NOTE: The pool is professionally maintained by the local pool shop, but there is no daily pool cleaning service like in a hotel.

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS: The pool area only has one entry point: a gate between the garage and the main house. This gate is secured with a child lock.

HOUSE RULES

No pets allowed.

No smoking inside.

BBQ to be cleaned after each use.

Swimming pool gates must be closed at all times.

Children must be supervised by a responsible adult in the pool area at all times.

Before departure:

- garbage to be placed in bins outside,

- dishwasher to be emptied.

Full house rules on the pin board in the kitchen, including emergency contact.

Failure to comply with house rules can lead to eviction or withholding of all or parts of the bond, Bond will also be withheld anything is missing from the house or if there is damage to the house.

KEYCODE

About one week before you arrive, you will receive the keycode for Scrubtide. You will find two sets of keys in a little key safe. One will include the house key only, the other one the house key and the pool safety gate key. We usually have that locked when nobody is at Scrubtide, but you obviously do not have to lock it every time.

EARLY ARRIVAL / LATE DEPARTURE

If nobody is booked in immediately before or after you, you are most welcome to arrive as early as you would like and leave as late as you would like. If you would like to do that, please get in touch closer to the date of the visit so we can let you know if any last minute adjacent bookings have come in.

EMERGENCY CONTACT

You will have a local contact in case of an emergency. His name and phone number are on the kitchen pinboard.

LINEN AND CLEANING

You will need to bring bed linen (sheets, pillow and quilt covers), towels and tea towels. For guests who travel from far away our lovely cleaner can organise linen and towels at cost price.

Loved our stay at Scrubtide!

Our family of four (11 year old daughter & 14 year old son) had a great stay at Scrubtide. We could easily have fit our extended family there but unfortunately they couldn't join us. Proximity to the beach was excellent and we enjoyed body surfing most days (waves varied but we had a few Big Days!) As Sara suggested we spotted kangaroos walking through the scrub across the street and enjoyed the many birds who visited each day. It was a bit chilly for the pool but we used it a few times and enjoyed it too. Aldinga bakery, Victory Hotel and Star of Greece were all terrific, and the Willunga farmers market was fun but best of all for us was the cycling. The riding around McLaren Vale was outstanding and there's a great operator out of Adelaide who delivers high performance bikes and another local place to rent from as well. Sara was lovely to deal with and even helped us out coordinating some logistics given we were coming from so far away (Canada). We hope to return!

good family place

This is a great place for the family close to beach and the pool was really nice there was lots of toys for the little ones in saying that the yard is not fenced and the sand pit is not useable as it's over grown if you want to use it you would

have to dig it up and there is no jungle hut its a few pallets nailed together that kids have wrote signs on the house looks just like the photos and the owner was lovely to deal with but once we arrived and informed her the washing machine was broken we never heard from her again it was a real inconvenience as we stayed for 8 days and spent a few thousand $ on this property with the promise of a machine and then had to spend a further $5 a load at the landro mat (a family with 4 kids soon adds up) with out even a sorry she never even told us when the work man was coming to fix the garage ( we were also promised secure parking had to park a car out the frount ) over all nice comfy place not high class and not the most secure but nice for family as long as nothing goes wrong or you are on your own

Owner's Response: Rebecca is absolutely lovely. All my interactions before and during her stay were friendly and enjoyable. It broke my heart when I read in her review about the washing machine not working. The washing machine is brand new (purchased in September 2016). Had I known that it was not working, it would have been replaced within 3 hours. I say this with confidence because we are lucky to have our builder as the local contact for guests. He can fix anything. When our dishwasher stopped working, he drove to the local appliances store, bought a new one and had it ready for the guests to use within 3 hours. In Rebecca’s case the first person to know about the washing machine problem was the cleaner who came after Rebecca and her family had checked out and found a note on the kitchen bench. It makes me really sad that something that would have been so very easy to fix has negatively affected Rebecca’s holiday. To avoid that from happening again, I have changed the instructions to guests. I now ask that they CALL our builder IMMEDIATELLY if they experience a problem. Not email him, not email me; with emails you never know if they arrived. When I emailed Rebecca after having read her review she said she emailed me about the washing machine. Unfortunately I never received her email and there is also no trace of it in my junk folder. [For future guests: if I do not respond to your email within 24 hours, I have not received it.] Unnecessary delays can be easily avoided by simply calling and personally talking to our builder. It was unlucky that Rebecca and her family arrived after the previous guests had broken our brand new automatic panel lift garage doors (installed in October 2016). Only one garage doors was affected (so secure parking for Rebecca's car was available). But I am always embarrassed when Scrubtide is not 100% functional, so I apologized in writing to Rebecca for one of the two garage doors not working. Her email response was understanding and generous which I was very grateful for. Our builder let her know when the garage experts came to fix the door. Another bit of background I would like to provide (which is important for everyone who is considering to book this house) is that Scrubtide is not a hotel, not a motel, not any kind of commercial accommodation. It is our quirky old family holiday home. So when Rebecca talks about a “few pallets nailed together that kids have wrote signs on the house” she is talking about our little family project. We had loads of fun building it with our 5 year old daughter, our 8 year old son and their little friends last year when we spent our annual holiday at Scrubtide. We imagined that other children staying at Scrubtide would also enjoy it, but it was never intended to be a professional cubby house. It’s just a space our kids created and love spending time in, that’s all. Rebecca and her family are welcome at Scrubtide anytime.

Scrubtide

Our stay was great! We had ample space (5 adults, 5 kids), the kitchen design is perfect and huge windows everywhere means we could watch the kids play under the tangle of tree limbs in the courtyard or in the pool - such a thoughtful design.

Tawny Frogmouths dropped by the big courtyard on New Year’s eve, and Wrens fluttered about every day – so important to retain native vegetation and undergrowth for these amazing critters. I’m glad the house is designed in-keeping with the beautiful park (Aldinga Scrub) next door - the trail being so close to the house was great for kangaroo spotting and morning walks. And the short walk to the beach was ideal. Easy holiday. Cheers.

Owner's Response: Like Arron, we love the native birds in the Aldinga Scrub. When we bought Scrubtide the garden was full of plants which were not native to the area and which required a lot of water. We did not feel comfortable about that. First of all because water is precious and scarce in South Australia, and second because the native animals (especially the birds) rely on native plants as their habitat. The tiny little Blue Wrens Arron mentions, for example, love bushes to hide in. So one year ago we started revegetating the garden with the aim of turning it into an extension of the Scrub Conservation Park which is located just across the street from our house. With the help of a local expert, Bob (our kids call him the Lorax), we planted 50 plants around the side and the back fence. Last time we counted 48 of them survived, which we are very excited about. We have booked in Bob for June to plant another 50. So year by year the garden will be returned to what it naturally was meant to look like. Arron’s review made us very happy; it’s lovely to know that our guests share our passion for the unique fauna and flora of the Scrub. Arron: next time you come you will have to bush-bash your way to the front door ;-)

Just what we needed

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Scrubtide. My son got married at Willunga. There was enough space in the home for my family of four and my sister's family of four to both have our own space and share the pool and entertainment area. The relaxed outdoor area and the beautiful location - near to the beach and right on the doorstep of Aldinga Scrub gave us the R & R needed in amongst the wonderful buzz of the wedding. I found the owner and caretaker very helpful and all we needed seemed to be on hand in the house. Heartfelt thanks Tina and Pete

Disgusting

Didn't look anything like photos on net. Cubby house completely overgrown and rife with spiders. Sand pit filthy and could not be played in. Bbq facilities filthy - full of dead cockroaches. House was dirty, tiles falling off in bathrooms... Definitely not a premium property- will never stay there again.

Owner's Response: To be honest: I am not sure what is going on here. I am very surprised to see this review submitted more than 2 months after Fiora stayed at Scrubtide, especially given that she did not raise those issues during her stay with either myself or the local contact (who is there to assist guest if they have any problems at all). I address the issues raised in the review below: - Before arrival of new guests, the garden and the pool are cleaned. - Before arrival of new guests, the house is either professionally cleaned or cleaned by the previous guests and checked. - All the furniture was replaced in early 2014. - The house is old. It has never been advertised as a modern, premium property. - We have undertaken major renovations in the second half of 2014 (new roof, new ceilings, new downlights and new ducted airconditioning). The bathrooms have not been renovated. They are perfectly functional - in fact they have the greatest water pressure we have ever had in a house - and there are no tiles falling off the walls. But the red tiles in the ensuite and the brown patterned tiles in the main bath have very much of a 50ties retro feel to them, no doubt about that. This is also clearly visible on the pictures we have posted online for guest to see. We always try to ensure that guests have realistic expectations of Scrubtide before their arrival.
