We are a professional family with very strong ties and attachments to the Berkshires. The 'Residence' on Williamsville Road has been in our family for over 40 years. It's been that magical place where our extended family has lived, loved and grown. It's been that beautiful space where marriage proposals were accepted and where joyous weddings took place.
It's been our home to welcome the newest members of our families and where our children spent weekends and holidays delighting us with their discoveries of a fallen bird, wild strawberries, or new deer prints in the snow.
It's been that fun treat where teenagers invited their city friends for swimming, skiing, and sleepovers. It's been the quiet retreat where sister-in-laws got to know one another better and where brothers bonded; that place where parents aged, where screenwriters wrote, where the academics of the family studied and researched, and where so many dreams started that ultimately changed the lives of others in so many ways.
That is our home. That is The Residence. This is the unique love and magic we can offer you as your 'Home-Away-from-Home' in the Berkshires.
Sheva & Emma Gross, cousins in the family that has owned the Residence for 50yrs purchased this chateau / country house in 1968
The property (14 acres of pristine woods) is secluded and yet just minutes to everything. Our caretaker Michael is there if you need him, and all efforts are made to make your stay in our home as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.
The Residence is also a unique piece of Berkshire history. The first cabin on the property (across the driveway from the rental) was built 'by hand' by Gertrude Robinson Smith and her companion, two very feisty and spirited women who defied convention for their time. (The New York Times called the Residence 'a manless eden.')
In addition to founding the American Women's Association, raising funds for war relief, and championing independence for young women in New York City, Ms. Robinson Smith was a co-founder of Tanglewood, and the Residence actually served as the first ticket office for the music festival!! A rustic one-room cabin off the upper driveway of the property is there today as it was then, marked, simply, 'office.'
The rental is spacious, comfortable and beautiful, and the grounds are well-kept and very peaceful.
What a gem! 4 adults and 4 kids were comfortable and cozy in this woodsy retreat in West Stockbridge. With temperatures in the double-digit negatives, we were not able to explore the property as much as we wanted but the hikes that we were able to take were breathtaking and the kids LOVED exploring the woods and the creek. The house was a perfect fit for our group, whether we were hanging out in front of the fire, or the kids were playing board games in "their" room upstairs, we were comfortable and happy. The property has this great feeling of being super remote and isolated but being really close to all the area attractions all at the same time. The owners were extremely helpful and responsive every step of the way.
First off let me say that the owners are incredibly responsive to any question. We had a cable tv issue, which could only be resolved by the old unplug, plug back in method. It was also uncharacteristically hot for May and the room air conditioners as well as dehumidifier literally saved our vacation. The home is even more beautiful in person. We felt so relaxed there, that we decided to forgo our usual dinners out and eat-in. The cable stations are robust for we eat-in couch potatoes. I got to watch the French Open and professional golf, and the hubby watched his cycling shows on BEIN.
Some places I'd recommend for eating, Once Upon a Table in Stockbridge for lunch. There's a chocolate shop located behind them with great gelato for dessert. We got take-out from The Brick House Pub in Housatonic, very close-by which was always excellent. For breakfast we went to Haven Cafe and Bakery as well as Spoon in Lenox. Also Pleasant and Main Cafe in Great Barrington is a nice spot too.
If you have a dog, try Kennedy Park in Lenox. It's completely shaded and has short or long loops. And don't forget Taft Farm in Great Barrington for their fresh baked cookies and brownies.
My sister, cousin and I all want you to know how much we enjoyed your family home. With the exception of the saggy downstairs bed, (which has now been replaced!) everything was welcoming, comfortable and perfectly suited for our little gathering. We spent happy evenings before a crackling fire, sharing our stories, playing cards (have you ever tried Spite and Malice?) and making simple meals. Spring was on the verge of bursting forth. As a Californian, the abundance of water was a welcome novelty and I have a great appreciation for the boulders and stone walls that are found everywhere. So thank you for sharing your home with us.
Very Peaceful spot for a family getaway. Lovely property, nicely equipped kitchen. Clean house. The bedroom downstairs needs a new mattress, but the other two were OK. THe fireplace was great and lots of firewood on hand. All in all was a wonderful place to spend the Christmas holiday.Beautiful, quaint town. Wish there was snow! Like many country homes, it does have mice! We heard them in the walls at night and found a dead one in a trap in the kitchen. Given the location, not surprising. Nice hiking trails on the property.
The property is beautiful and very secluded/surrounded by lots of trees. The emphasis on preserving nature in the area and especially on the property makes it very peaceful and private. We had a lovely weekend in the cottage, and with Lenox and Great Barrington very close, there is certainly lots to do and see. Monument Mountain also very close and provides wonderful hiking and stunning views, not to mention grounds around the property itself also include lovely forested trail and a nearby pond. The cottage was very clean and comfortable, and provided for all of our needs. Perfect for a weekend getaway.
Our group of college friends needed a place for a weekend wedding in the Berkshires and were very pleased with our stay at the Residence. Comfortable, charming, quiet and easy access to Lenox, Stockbridge, Great Barrington and the rest. Highly recommend the house and the managers were super easy to deal with during the booking process.
The Berkshires are an unparalleled haven for the Arts, encounters with nature, and New England charm and history, all within 2-3 hours from New York or Boston. In the summer, visitors and performers flock to the region to enjoy top-quality theater, music and dance. In the winter, downhill and cross-country skiing beckon. And throughout the year, the great outdoors are preserved for the enjoyment of all--whether you prefer to connect with nature by hiking, fishing, canoeing, cycling, or from the comfort of an Adirondack chair perched on your deck. Amble through historic towns and buildings and visit world-class art museums and galleries, stopping to dine at delicious eateries along the way.
