THE BEACH

One of the finest beaches of the northern coast, Wonga Beach is just 200 steps from your front door. It faces the Coral Sea, home of the Great Barrier Reef. Stroll peacefully and take in spectacular Daintree mountain views in the north. At low tide, explore South Wonga Beach's coral reef with its tidal pools and interesting microcosms. Migratory shore birds seasonally visit and many tropical birds inhabit the beach forest where traversing walkways and a few historic sites can be found. We provide deluxe canopy chairs and picnic gear for you to while timelessly away at the beach.

WORLD HERITAGE WONDERLAND

There is enormous beckoning from the land and seascapes within this part of Tropical North Queensland. Reef Cottage is an ideal base for extending your exploration into two of Australia’s UNESCO World Heritage listed sites (Great Barrier Reef and Wet Tropics). This area is known for unique leisure activities such as reef tours, eco island trips, rare species spotting, birding, rainforest trekking, swimming in the wild, river sports, jungle surfing as well as its aboriginal culture.

We are avid nature lovers and have stocked the Cottage with resources including brochures, books, videos, scouter binocular and an iPad loaded with guiding material to help you plan your excursions in this wonderful part of Australia. Small group private boat charter can be arranged for your exclusive touring of the Great Barrier Reef and her islands.

With best regards from your hosts,

Shane & Mei

About Shane & Mei

We are avid nature lovers and have an interest in travel, music, books and anthropology.

Shane & Mei purchased this house in 2004

Why Shane & Mei chose Wonga Beach

In 2004 while on holidays from Sydney, we chanced upon Wonga Beach and were taken by its purity. The simple looking fisherman's cottage facing the beach was up for sale so we bought it without hesitation. This part of Australia was (and still is), like a remote paradise in the South Pacific islands, but has remarkable access to modern living. It was an impulse buy, which was to change our lives eventually.

What makes this house unique

9 years later, we moved to North Queensland permanently and decided to renovate the cottage. We kept the beach house frame, built a heritage facade and designed interiors with a theme covering the Coral Sea and the rainforest. Outside, we laid lawn, paved walkways, stone beds and a tropical garden. Reef Cottage is an escape for guests as we have given thought into fitting deluxe amenities not normally found in a small family holiday home. As well we provide resources that assist enjoyment of recreational activities in our tropical paradise.

Relaxing, tranquil, perfect

  • 5 of 5

This was the holiday house we were looking for, we were on a family holiday after getting married so were looking for something a bit special where we could relax. We felt like we were staying in a luxury resort while having the privacy of being in our own house. It was such a peaceful stay. A few meters away from the beach in a very quiet street. We stayed in September and found the house did not require aircon (which is there if needed) due to the well designed cooling features. We were able to have all the windows open and enjoy the wonderful sounds of the birds and wildlife night and day. The pool is saltwater and left you feeling refreshed, we were pleased that the pool sat under a fair amount of shade in the afternoon. The beds were very comfortable and we all slept soundly during our stay. The house was incredibly clean and was cleaned mid stay as we were there for 10 days. The host is very friendly and passionate about the area and provided a wealth of information. Every room was beautifully presented and exceptionally maintained. The hosts have filled the house with everything you could possibly need.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and highly recommend it, while the photos show it off, it is so much better in real life and had more space than I had expected.

Immaculate cottage in great location

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I just completed a 6 night stay at Reef Cottage. We now understand why previous reviews have been so good. This home away from home is perfectly furnished and equipped and reflects Mei’s good taste and meticulous attention to detail. The location is perfect for exploring the area, spending time on the nearby beach or just hanging out on the property. Be sure to take advantage of Mei’s wealth of information about the area. Two of her specific recommendations, Mojo’s Restaurant and Solar Whisper Wildlife Cruise are highlights of our stay in Australia.

Owner's Response: This was an amazing hosting experience for us as we found kindred passion for nature and shared similar taste in music as well. We are so glad you and your wife enjoyed our home and used every opportunity to visit the surrounding rainforest and rivers. Thank you for looking after our holiday house so well. Mei loved watching that very interesting slide show of wildlife from your travels and we both will miss you.

A little piece of paradise

  • 5 of 5

Reef cottage is perfectly and thoroughly appointed with all things big and small. Most important was a comfortable bed and pillows covered in soft white linen plus the rooms are air conditioned. Kitchen has everything laid out so its easy to find utensils dishes glasses etc to cook up a great meal. Plenty of special spots to relax, round the pool, on the back deck, the front sun room, loungeroom or the quaint sitting room off the master bedroom. A large selection of books dvd's, cd's and information literature on local attractions plus an ipad full of info about flora and fauna. The cottage is spotlessly clean and comfortable. Enjoy your stay!

Peaceful, tasteful, quiet

  • 5 of 5

We really loved our stay over Christmas at Reef Cottage and we found it to be a comfortable, functional, peaceful and exquisitely decorated property with such easy access to the beach. All the sights are very close by (Daintree, Cape Trib, Port Douglas) and Mei, our host, was most helpful in providing info on where all the interesting things to see and do are and we ended up going on a fabulous fruit tasting at Cape Trib Exotic Fruit Farm thanks to this info! Love love loved it! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!

Wonderful holiday home.

  • 5 of 5

If you are reading this, looking for somewhere to stay whilst exploring north Queensland, look no further. This cottage must be, by far the best there is.

Mei, the owner is a lovely lady who has obviously put a huge amount of time and effort

into creating the perfect holiday home and she has thought of everything. My wife and I

stayed for six days and loved every minute. The only downside - you won't want to leave. Thank you Mei.

Exceptional cottage for exploring North Queensland

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful 6 night stay at Reef Cottage! Having stayed in numerous rental properties, mainly in Europe, this was by far the best we have ever stayed in. Superbly equipped for indoor and outdoor living, pristinely clean and only 200m from the gorgeous wild and undeveloped Wonga beach. Beautifully quiet and restful (apart from the lovely wildlife sounds) and in the perfect location to explore the wonders of north Queensland - Daintree, Cape Tribulation, Atherton Tablelands, Cassowary Falls, Karunda and of course the Great Barrier Reef Lots of information provided in the cottage regarding all the activities available in the vicinity - and Mei can provide additional information if needed. Cannot recommend highly enough and would definitely revisit if I return to Australia. Thank you Mei.
