At 1st glance the cottage is very attractive with a lovely setting. 6-7/10

  • 3 of 5

Then we found many aspects which could be improved. Starting with the back entrance, via wooden steps, which were all water-collectors in the (welcome but incessant) rain, so we walked water into the house. The rooms were all good sizes but with the fashionablel too-many pillows on beds.

The kitchen was impractically set up. No inbuilt draining board, so washup water spilled onto the floor from the draining rack. We subsequently found a tray in the bottom of a cupboard that we should have placed under the rack. Couldn’t use the dishwasher even if we’d wanted, as no detergent could be found. Ditto a sponge, tea towel, or scourer until the next day. When we used the oven to cook a roast all the metal knobs got almost too hot to turn! The microwave oven is awkwardly placed too low under the bench top when there was an ideal height surface on the old, unused Metters stove where it could have sat.

Lounge seating was comfy and we figured out how to use the TV without a guide book. It did have a backgammon board and some trendy fashion mags, but nothing did I spy suitable for the chap to read. The solid fuel burner was nice to look at, but as it was tucked into the old fireplace and using the original chimney to flue away all the heat, quite ineffectual. Fortunately the ducted split-system aircon worked well.

My partner, who is very petite, found the trendy bathtub shape too small to lie in. There was no place in the shower cubicle to put soap etc. except on the floor.

You get a good impression from the fresh bread loaf and goodies in the fridge, but it’s only once you start living in it that the disadvantages manifest. My partner, who reads the likes of Vogue, liked the place and described it as ‘shabby chic’, but it wasn’t particularly shabby and we’ve stayed in better of that genre.

We hope you take our comments in the constructive spirit in which they are intended.

Gorgeous cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay at Jacaranda. It was the perfect venue for my bridesmaids and I to get ready before the wedding ceremony and I’m sure our professional photos will be incredible. There is so much space and all the small details are of the highest quality. Everything has been thought of and it was so beautiful. We will be back to stay again. Thank you

"Perfect in every way!"

  • 1 of 5

We stayed for 2 nights with another couple. Jacarandas is a peaceful, beautifully renovated, traditional cottage with all mod cons without losing its character. It is well equipped with everything we needed for a relaxing weekend and is immaculate with good quality linens and towels as well as lots of little extras. The surrounding areas are beautiful with a creek running through the property, prolific birdlife and beautiful fruit trees and pastures. The date palms are a great canopy to enjoy a lunch with local wines. The local wineries are a treat and walking and biking tracks on hand for those who want to explore.

The mozzies are quite friendly so take some spray but there is nothing else you need to take to enjoy this place.

A little jewel only a stones throw from Perth.

If I could rate this a 6 I would.

Thanks to our hosts for a great stay. We will definitely be back soon.

Historic cottage in the Bickley Valley

  • 5 of 5

Located between Mundaring and Kalamunds in the leafy green Bickley Valley. This is a very nice historic cottage with all mod cons. Our host provided us with everything from fresh bread, fresh eggs to coffee pods. A flowing creek in the back yard and ancient date palms in the front.

Winter paradise

  • 5 of 5

What an incredible spot in such an untapped part of Perth. The photos don't do this place justice, we selected in because of all the good reviews and it lived up to them all. It's that perfect dreamy cottage with such a modern twist. We have a little 1 year old and everything we needed for him was here so don't bother packing hair chairs/cot etc. We will definitely be back!
