You will be staying right in the middle of The Chittering Valley Wine Trail - there are four excellent wineries within 5 km of the Edge of the World (White Dog Farm, Stringybark Restaurant & Winery, Western Range Winery and Kyotmunga Estate). Stringybark (in walking distance) has a lovely restaurant while the others provide wine and olive tastings from the cellar doors. Wildflowers are magnificent in spring and there are plenty of walk trails and bike tracks in the valley.

Golden Grove orchard is just down the road (10 min) for Devonshire teas and fresh fruit, orchard tours and other activities for the kids.

The Maze/Outback Splash is a 15 minute drive away and offers timber, hedge and pine mazes and a wildlife park and also the newly opened Water Fun Park – fantastic fun for the kids.

Bullsbrook, Bindoon, Gingin and Toodyay are a little further but within easy reach. More details about the Local Arts & Crafts (eg Bindoon Arts & Crafts, Canterbury Crafts), the Chittering Museum and the Chittering Valley Sculpture Trail are available on the Chittering Tourist Association website. Also check the website of the Gravity Discovery Centre in Gingin.

For trips a little further afield you can try New Norcia for the monastery and bakery (45 mins), Lancelin for 4WDing and sandboarding in the dunes (just over 1 hr), and The Pinnacles (just over 2 hrs). And of course on your way back to Perth is the beautiful Swan Valley.

Events to keep an eye out for are the Bindoon wildflower festival in September, Bindoon Show in October, the Taste of Chittering weekend in August, seasonal monthly markets and much more.

About Nerida Schmidt

When I was a little girl I used to go to this spot on our farm that looked over the Chittering Valley and I used to think it was the Edge of the World, because it was the edge of mine - the name stuck and it has become known that in our family ever since. I used to say that when I grew up I wanted to build a house and live on the Edge of the World with my family and sure enough after getting married on the spot 18 years ago, our beautiful weekender was finished in 2008. Since then I have watched my two beautiful boys enjoy and explore the bush with our extended family and friends as I did as a kid and I look forward to many generations to come who will do the same.

Nerida Schmidt purchased this house in 2008

Why Nerida Schmidt chose Chittering

My Dad was born here and he and my beautiful Mum raised myself and my 3 siblings on the farm. They are still here, as are the four of us kids, now each with our own families and our own houses on the property. We run it as one working farm with sheep and llamas grazing and more than half of it is still virgin bush with native wildlife - kangaroos, rabbits, echidnas, the odd emu and a huge variety of birds. There is something about sitting on the deck and listening to the serenity and the sounds of the Australian bush here. There is an energy that this place has that we have all felt and have come to call "Edge Therapy". You and your family and friends can feel it too and I guarantee you will go away having been recharged and with a sense of peace after your mini-break, and all less than an hour from Perth CBD.

What makes this house unique

The Edge of the World Family Retreat has been designed to bring the family together and reconnect with nature and each other. On a wintery day you can sit in front of the double sided log fire and watch a movie or simply enjoy a glass of wine on the chaise lounges and take in the spectacular vista of the Chittering Valley while the kids play a board game. When the sun comes out enjoy your lunch or relax on the lounges on the deck, take a walk through the bush or toast marshmallows around the firepit. If you feel like venturing out into the valley there are restaurants, wineries, bakeries, orchards, and attractions a short drive away.

Awesome property and beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

Spent a very relaxing couple of days at this property. Everything you need is provided, the log fire is a great way to end the day and the views are stunning. There are plenty of birds and kangaroos around to make you feel like you are really out the city.

Beautiful House and Surroundings

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful house with no issues - fire place inside and fit pit outside were lovely to sit around. A well stocked house with no shortage of blankets during chilly times.

just amazing

  • 5 of 5

Had my family over from Philippines for a couple of nights stay in this wonderful place. We loved everything from the high ceilings and just the openness that greets you when you get into the house. The fireplace was a favourite that a couple of my siblings decided to sleep near the fire instead of the bedroom. Haha. We also went for a mini bush walk in one of the mornings. Overall we had an awesome time. We have decided to make it our holiday home next time my family comes over and make it our little tradition.
