GETTING TO TANGALOOMA RESORT ON MORETON ISLAND

Moreton Island is 40 km offshore from Brisbane. The island can be reached by ferry, barge or boat. . If you are not taking a vehicle, choose your island destination point and book the ferry or barge from the corresponding departure point. Extra services operate in school holidays and on long weekends. Bookings are essential

4WD VEHICLES ONLY:

As Moreton Island is a sand Island (3rd largest in the world) the only vehicles that operate on the Island are 4WD.

Providing your vehicle is a 4WD, you can drive it on the island as all of the tracks on the island are built for 4WD vehicles only.

It is not recommended to bring an All-Wheel Drive vehicle across as they are too low for proper clearance of the tracks.

NO 4WD?:

If you will not be bringing a 4WD vehicle to the Island you will need to catch the Tangalooma Resort Passenger Launch which departs from Holt Street Wharf, Pinkenba and travels to the Tangalooma Resort Jetty at least twice daily. Launch transfers cost around $80 per adult and $45 per child return for Tangalooma guests. A gated car park is available at Holt St. Wharf with parking charged at $15 per day or $60 per week. Bookings are essential.

The Resort mini bus can be booked to take your guests and luggage from the Jetty to your Tangalooma Hilltop House accommodation. The driver is to be paid $15 cash at the time of the trip. The charge is per trip and not per person.

BRINGING A 4WD:

Moreton Island Adventures operate the MiCat vehicle and passenger Ferry from Howard Smith Drive, Lytton at the Port of Brisbane to the Tangalooma Wrecks is the only vehicle Ferry operating between Brisbane and Tangalooma so early bookings are essential.

Most of Moreton Island is both national park and recreation area, which covers the national park to high water mark and the beaches to low water mark. Tidal wetlands and waters around the island are protected as part of Moreton Bay Marine Park.

The sheltered bay waters are home to various marine animals. Dugong feed on its seagrass communities while migratory and resident shorebirds feed and roost on the island's beaches. Humpback whales can be seen from Cape Moreton during their migration from June to November.

Indigenous cultural heritage includes shell middens that are evidence of thousands of years of Aboriginal occupation. Ruins of coastal defence bases from World War II are a reminder of Australia's involvement in world conflict.Moreton Island is a 37 km long, 10 km wide, wedge-shaped, sand island located 40 km from Brisbane. Along with North Stradbroke and South Stradbroke islands, Moreton Island forms the eastern boundary of Moreton Bay—a large, shallow, biologically diverse expanse of water.

The island is an important recreation area for people who live in the Brisbane region, receiving more than 170,000 visitors a year.
