Fun, Spacious Stone Home in Medieval Village 15 min Beaches

15 Reviews
Bedrooms 5
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

Photos and Description of this Cruïlles holiday house

House, 4 Bedrooms + Loft, 3 Baths (Sleeps 10 to 13) Bonus Stone Cottage for 3

Spacious, stone house with a tower from the 13th Century, updated kitchens and bathrooms, close to Barcelona, but in a different world. Next to (1 mile from) La Bisbal in a tiny medieval village with lush scenery, best beaches (15 km/9 miles away), quiet village living.

With 4 bedrooms plus bonus dormitory room/family room with an adjoining deck looking out on the countryside. Comfortably sleeps 8 plus. It has three baths, and a remodeled kitchen. It also has a large stone vaulted sitting room off the kitchen. It also has a spectacular view from the town's original 13th century watch tower and inviting terrace. Spacious and quiet enough for yoga practitioners, insulated enough for boisterous parties, and medieval enough that many of our young guests have called it "Hogwarts."

There is an additional stone cottage adjoining to accommodate groups of 13 for a surcharge.

This home is perfect for the budget conscious traveler or group who enjoys authenticity and village life, but proximity to world class dining, beaches and cultural offerings.

For the more active traveler, Girona is a center for cycling, both road and mountain. Hiking trails have been well developed in the area. There is world class golfing in Pals. The house and area are ideal for any time of year, since there is radiant heat in the home and the year round beauty of the country side. We've had guests stay for a weekend, weeks, or even months. IDEAL FOR A BARCELONA DWELLER or family to escape the city for the quiet to work, hike, relax, and regroup. Can Torre is also an ideal home base for other European travel, since it is close to the French Border and 20 to the Girona airport which has cheap flights to destinations all over Europe.

About Kristen Sparrow

We're a San Francisco family. Two of our (grown) children live in town and are making a go of it, while one is in Los Angeles on the road to stardom. Kevin is from DC, Kristen from Berkeley. We lived in Spain during a boom time in Spain from 1995 to1998. We were so lucky to have lived in Barcelona. It is the best of the best, though, or course that might hurt San Francisco's feelings. But Barcelona has the size, history, and depth that warrants the accolades.

Kristen Sparrow purchased this house in 1998

Why Kristen Sparrow chose Baix Emporda

We bought this house at the tail end of a 3 year stay in Barcelona in 1998. Against all the naysayers in Spain , we managed to refurbish and renovate the house and have used it ever since. The old stone houses never lose their charm and resilience. We've had family to the tune of 17 strong in the house, and it didn't even wince, nor did the town. And the beaches, the countryside and the medieval towns are what bring us back. We never get tired of it.

What makes this house unique

The thing about this house/village/Costa Brava is the peaceful beauty, the range of beaches, and yet world class amenities in a country environment. This is why the cognoscenti from all over Europe come to the Alt and Baix Empordan.

Beautiful house in a charming village

  • 5 of 5

We were 4 adults and 6 children and there was more than enough room for all of us. The kids loved the house, they thought they were staying in a castle. The town of Cruilles is a charming little town conveniently located only a few kilometres from La Bisbal. It was nice to be able to walk around the entire town without worrying about traffic, although there were quite a few cyclists who come through. We enjoyed shopping in Bisbal, visited Torroella de Montgri and went to the beach in L'Estartit. I wish we could have stayed longer as there is so much to do and see in the area.

Owner's Response: I'm glad that this reviewer chose to highlight the cycling in this area. I can't emphasize enough the opportunities for road biking but plenty of trail and safe, casual treks also . Super fun.

Enjoyable stay in an medieval town wonderful rural settings but close to beaches

  • 5 of 5

We were 2 families with children from 8 to 15 years of age, 9 people in total. The house very very much enjoyed by both adults as well as teenagers and children. There were plenty of room for everybody, several bathrooms and bedrooms. The chiming of the village church bell every 15 minutes took some getting used to but eventually added to the nice experience. We had rented cars which is a must have when living on the countryside. But this enabled us to explore the region, different beaches and cities and sights. In La Bisbal 2 kms away you can buy groceries, buy nice pieces of ceramics and as we discovered they have some really nice restaurants as well ex La Cantonada.

Arrangemants before the trip and information from the owners also added to the positive experience.

Thank you Kristen for all the effort you put in, we´re already talking about the event of another visit.

Owner's Response: We love the Cantonada restaurant also. Great food and good value. Along the river there are some fun places also. We offer a 15% discount for returning guests, so keep that in mind! It's funny about the church bells, vacationers seem to notice them at first and then they just become a part of the life in town.

Super location near coastal, historical, recreational, and cultural sites, just 2 km from La Bisbal

  • 5 of 5

This location is exactly as described and was more than comfortable for the four of us (two couples). We cooked-in each evening and had delicious coffee and breakfast each morning. The only thing we missed was more "outdoor" space in which to relax as the terrace has no "view" for those who are seated, and "garden" and front dooryard are very public. There are plenty of well furnished indoor "lounge" areas -- 3rd floor parlor and ground floor entryway were our two favorites. Beds were of good quality and comfortable. Visitors to this property will be totally surrounded by Spanish town life, including the sounds of school children and church bells and the smells of livestock. This immersion is part of why we enjoyed our stay so much. We would recommend this medieval tower home to adventurous travelers and families eager to explore the region. Owners provided a wealth of wonderful, accurate information about the area. A car is a must for this property. Definitely explore the restaurants of nearby Monells and for a great coastal hike, head for Sa Tuna! Also, Friday is market day in La Bisbal -- don't miss it!

Owner's Response: The trick to the terrace is that you need to have the table and chairs to the far east of the terrace. I was despondent when the terrace was first built, but it turns out that if you sit to the far end of the terrace you have a great view. The garden is, yes, in the middle of the town. We put up screening on all the walls. But, frankly, some people love and live in the garden, and then others don't. But, note to self, need to advise people about moving the table on the terrace!

A wonderful break with all the amenities.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for February break, 2012, with three adults, five children and a dog. Everything was better than advertised, it's just such a charming and generous space.

Cruilles is a perfect blend of medieval village with modern amenities five minutes away in the local town, La Bisbal.

The kids loved the house, and set up a "Kids-Club" (no grown-ups allowed) in the tower. They could run through the walled village with relative safety, explore the fields, play in the garden, visit the local monastery.

The grown-ups enjoyed drinks on the terrace, big meals in the kitchen, and peaceful nights. We explored local beach towns, hiked the cliffs, visited local architectural wonders, the Dali museum, went horse-back riding and more.

Next trip: we will definitely organize road-biking in advance. Couldn't quite fit it in and it is road-biking heaven -- it was hard to just sit and watch the packs of cyclists filling their canteens at the fountain out front.

Thanks to our hosts for all their comprehensive information that made the trip so rich with experience.

Beautiful views, charming neighbors, lovely villages.

We stayed with another family for Christmas. The home is very cozy with ample room for a couple of families vacationing together. Easy to get to with a larger town nearby if you should need extra provisions or shopping. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and highly recommend it.

Owner's Response: The area does have beautiful views and charming medieval villages,a great get-away in winter and summer. But this review underscores some of the unique qualities of the house. In winter, the house is very warm and cozy since it's made of stone, so nice for the cold months. (It stays cool in the summer because of the stone also.) There is a lot of room in the house! It easily accommodates groups and families, but fine for couples, too.
