Overview

About the property

SUITE SIXTEEN - IN BRIEF

Suite Sixteen has amazing views over the ocean, your own ringside seat for whale watching. And if the whales are shy, there's a lot more you can do to enjoy nature from this unique property.

Everyone tells us there is nowhere else on the Northern Beaches of Sydney quite like SUITE SIXTEEN. And since we opened we've had guests from all over the world who have marvelled at the location, the views, the garden, the décor and the modernist furniture, all sourced by a 1960s design enthusiast.

At SUITE SIXTEEN, the ocean views are immense, a 180 degree panorama that changes throughout the day. Watch the whale migrations in season, see the dolphins frolic in the bay below, or in summer watch as the yachts sail around Barrenyoey, then return in the afternoon, often under full spinnaker. We even have quaint Easter Water Dragons which, though perfectly harmless to humans, delight in sunning themselves in the Zen garden outside Suite Sixteen.

Due to its unique character, SUITE SIXTEEN has appeared in design magazines and was made a featured listing on Stayz after one of their senior executives took some time out at SUITE SIXTEEN to understand why it had been one of their most popular listings.

Having a northerly aspect you'll get sun all day, and will be bathed in natural light.

Like many before you, you won't want to leave! In fact, many of our guests with plans for eating out every night have chosen to have a 'stay-in' holiday finding the ambience of SUITE SIXTEEN - both inside the apartment and out in the Zen garden, too enticing for them. Others have chosen to leave their car parked and walk everywhere during their stay. Robert, your host and concierge, can show guests all the waking tracks and shortcuts that are known only to locals.

SUITE SIXTEEN is perfect for celebrating special occasions such as wedding anniversaries or birthdays, or for those who simply want to chill out and de-stress for a while. Our guests have come from Scandinavia, Britain, USA, S-E Asia, South Africa, NZ and virtually every state and region in Australia. All have enjoyed the experience and their reviews bear this out.

ALL ABOUT THE DESIGN & FIT-OUT

SUITE SIXTEEN forms the entire lower level of an iconic modernist house designed in 1956 by Frank Cavalier, one of the new wave of architects in Sydney who helped transform our notions about the domestic dwelling.

Completely renovated several years ago by one of Australia's most awarded builders it is one of only a few buildings of its type that remain in Palm Beach and the only one we are aware of that has been restored to such a high standard. It was originally featured in House & Garden in 1958. In more recent times it has appeared in various design publications both locally and internationally and has also been used as a setting for still photography and film shoots.

Decorated and furnished in a style befitting its modernist heritage, SUITE SIXTEEN has a warm and welcoming ambience with a strong Scandinavian flair. Authentic pieces appear throughout from design icons such as Hans Vegner, Charles & Ray Eames, Grant Featherston, Le Corbusier etc. are complemented with Marimekko highlights and hand-made ceramics.

Accessed via a private entrance a stunning unobstructed northerly view awaits you which sweeps from North Palm Beach, takes in Pittwater, Barrenjoey Lighthouse, parts of the Central Coast, Cape Three Points and the ocean beyond.

What a great long weekend!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly researched places to stay for the long weekend, knowing there was a good chance it was going to rain all weekend. Saw the pictures for suite16 and thought tho looks perfect. It lived up to all of our expectations! Top 3 reasons why:

1. The views are amazing! Regardless of sun or rain, the full length windows give spectacular views.

2. The furnishings are lovely. Everything from the red rocking chair to the leather chaise. It's all very pretty.

3. The location. We went for a walk everyday (weather permitting)..in different directions....Never disappointed at where we ended up.

Add to that lovely owners, whale sightings and underfloor heating and you can see why we loved it! We will be back!!

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review Jo, Very much appreciated! As you know, we always leave our guests to enjoy their privacy unless they need assistance with something. But during some of the truly dreadful weather we had over the long weekend, both my wife and I were stressing for you. So glad then that the Suite Sixteen magic worked for you both. We look forward to your return visit. Warm regards, Robert

Fabulous stay!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here over the Easter long weekend and were blessed with glorious weather. We spent most of the time outside admiring the stunning view, either baking in the sun or resting under the large beach umbrella which is provided. We had our 5 month old son with us so the large sliding door that closes off the bedroom from the living area was perfect for when he was sleeping to give us two separate spaces. All the necessary basics were provided including dishwashing and washing machine powders, pots, crockery and cutlery, towels, etc. The owners are super accommodating and were the perfect hosts, discreet yet available as needed. The apartment is not ideal for a crawling baby or toddler which is such a shame as we would love to make this suite a regular family holiday location!

Owner's Response: Thanks Emily! Your compliments are our reward. Re young children, for those who don't know the property it is unfenced to capitalise on the extraordinary view. We have regular visits from a family with a toddler (2 years old) but close supervision is definitely recommended - especially for the adventurous.

Overpriced,Overrated,Underwhelmed andUncomfortable

  • 3 of 5

We stayed here for 4nights.Directions to the property were not good and we had difficulty finding it in the dark.Access to the apartment was also not very good along a narrow unmade path.(especially in heels), This is not a luxurious appartment..The kitchen facilities are basic, Additionally both fridges were not working effectively. resulting in the loss of some of our food.Although the owner was made aware of this no offer of restitution was made or an apology given. No air conditioning just a modern ineffectual fan,.Of more concern was the presence of cockroaches ,one of which was found in my wifes hair when she was drying it.Again Robert did nothing to rectify matters,

Finally the chic furniture is nothing to shout about,Cheap plastic retro dining chairs chipped in places ,totally inappropriate.Warnings were given to take great care when using same..All in all not a comfortable stay given price we paid..

Owner's Response: At Suite Sixteen we take pride in ensuring our guests enjoy their stay and all reviews to date reflect that. Graham & Maggie, who were considerably older than our usual demographic, arrived at 9:45PM on a wet night, direct from their flight from the UK. They had chosen a hire car with no satellite navigation and had no mobile phone(s). The refrigerators operate without fault. They were over-filled and the temperature had been turned up, not down. I apologised for any misunderstandings and set the fridges correctly. The next day I emailed to check all was OK, but received no reply. Suite Sixteen is eco-friendly. We have solar panels on the roof and no air-conditioning. Being architect-designed, sea breezes provide cooling. Graham & Maggie's stay was marked by humid weather and constant rain. That brought a few flying insects inside through open windows. I don't believe they were cockroaches as the apartment is regularly perimeter sprayed for crawling insects. Every piece of furniture in Suite Sixteen is as shown in the photographs - classic, original items from the 1960s. The "plastic" chairs referred to are mid-century "stem chairs". Designed by Grant Featherstone (Australian designer) in 1969. A set of them was acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria in 1974. Our listing in Stayz is very explicit - both in words and photographs. I am sorry Suite Sixteen was not suitable for Graham & Maggie and hope they enjoy the remainder of their holiday in Australia.
