Cardinal House Lodge - Cardinal House Lodge offers a large screened porch that wraps around 2 sides of the building and provides space to dine, sleep, or watch the river. A large circular fireplace offers additional gathering opportunities in an open family room setting. The cabin will sleep 8 to 12 comfortably. The cabin has 3 bedrooms. There are also 2 twin beds in view of the fireplace, a sleeper couch, and cots are available. The cabin has 1 bath with shower and 1 1/2 bathroom. The kitchen is fully equipped and features a Vulcan stove, huge butcher-block prep table, exterior gas and charcoal grills, indoor and outdoor dining areas, and a riverside campfire circle.
The cabin is adapted from a 1950's church camp called Camp Merry Ledges. The Camp is constructed of rustic redwood and douglas fir and provides the perfect setting for couples, families, fishermen, and outdoor groups looking for a river retreat. This cabin is the perfect retreat for a river and nature lovers.
We are bordered by the Blue River and public lands: Enjoy easy access to the Blue River. You are nicely situated halfway between 2 public access points. Access points can be arranged for river trips of varying lengths. Bring your own boats or rent boats from a nearby livery.
The section of the river where Cardinal House Lodge is not where they run the rental canoes.
Fishermen ABSOLUTELY love fishing on our section of the river. You can slide into the river at the lodge and float for trips downstream of 3, 5, 10 or more miles. Many access points lie downstream of us.
The Blue River is renowned for it's cleanliness and naturalness. It abounds with wildlife.
Harrison Crawford State Forest, O'Bannon Woods State Park, Patoka Lake, Hoosier National Forest, and the Ohio River are all within 15 minutes of us. That means there is a lot of Hiking, Biking, Hunting, Fishing, and backpacking awaiting you.
Gambling, night life, and shopping abound: We are only 40 minutes from 2 different Casinos. Louisville is about 40 minutes away. French Lick is about 50 minutes away. Corydon is Indiana's 1st state capital and has a lot of things going on.
Scenic Drives and Historic Tourism : We are located right on the Ohio River Scenic ByWay, HWY 62. Route 66 is a few miles away. These roads offer roadside picnicking, amazing vistas, and roads canopied by living trees. You can explore for days and not see the same road twice.
Another wonderful weekend at this rustic hideaway! If you're looking for a no frills, relaxing getaway, then this is it.
We had a great time. Our GPS was inaccurate and we had a little trouble finding the cabin. Great privacy and everything we needed. If the weather forecast is really hot, you might want to bring a couple extra fans. But, there are ceiling fans in the rooms and numerous screened windows so it opens up very well. Plenty of kitchen supplies. The National Geographic collection is great. We ran out of gas for the grill and the manager had a new tank delivered the promptly the next morning. There was firewood. I don't know if it was provided or left from the last guest. There are first aid kits and fire extinguishers. I was surprised how few mosquitos and flies were around. We were very pleased with our stay.
My wife an I stayed for 4 nights during a beautiful Indian summer week. We brought our kayaks and had great access to Blue River. With the low river flow, we had kayak access to a long stretch of river up stream and down stream with minimal portages. The deep water in front of the cabin provided excellent fishing from the kayaks. The banks were too steep and foliaged to drag a fish up the bank so I recommend bringing a small raft, canoe, or kayak for fishing.. Catfish really were biting along the muddy bank. A well stocked firewood box provided a great camp fire. We slept in the beds in the big living room and enjoyed the cool night air with screened windows. The kitchen is well supplied and we cooked all of our meals at the cabin and grilled out every night. We did not see another soul except for an occasional car traveling down the road and the friendly big dog that came by once a day to do a clown act for bacon . They also have almost every National Geographic magazine ever published in the cabin. Very romantic in a L'il Abner sort of way.
I was the best man for a 10-person bachelor party, and this place was terrific. Our biggest concern was finding a place large enough to accommodate everyone, and Cardinal House delivered in spades. Those pictures aren't lying! The extra cots are in the covered patio, but could be easily moved inside the cabin if needed. The actual beds were...serviceable, but that's what we expected for a cabin. The common area was MASSIVE and could easily handle one large-group hangout or multiple smaller circles. Large tables inside and outside meant our whole group could eat together wherever we preferred. The kitchen, while a bit secluded from the common area, was plenty large enough for multiple prep stations, and the utensils and kitchenware were clean and fairly organized.
The seclusion of the cabin is incredible. "Neighbors" are hundreds of feet and patches of trees away, and light/noise pollution is almost nonexistent. The groom and I took a nighttime stroll up and down the road for our heart-to-heart and could use the moonlight alone to navigate (at least what light could creep through the trees).
There are trade-offs, of course. Yes, there are bugs and critters inside the cabin. Because, you know, it's a cabin. Our group left one bathroom light on overnight to try and draw as many of them as possible away from our beds and cots; it helped a bit. And yes, it gets hot and stuffy inside with ten guys and no A/C in June. They do provide a large (loud) fan to help airflow a bit, and yes, the shower is very small (we're pretty sure it's a converted linen closet). But again, it's hard to substantiate an argument that these warrant a bad review, since the compromises on luxury are exactly what allow you to have such remarkable isolation along the river (and a place this big!) for this price. If you're staying here, you should understand that it's going to feel like a cabin, and cabins will sometimes let outdoors come inside. Everything that can be controlled (towels, bedding, appliances, kitchenware, other things that *aren't* nature) was clean and well-maintained.
At under an hour to Louisville, it was close enough to the city for us to take in a baseball game and fancy dinner, and at over 30 minutes away from Louisville, it was far enough from the city to avoid all unnecessary...other people. We also played some great paintball outside Corydon. We've already had other members of our group suggest returning when it's time for their bachelor parties. Loved it
This is a very cool cabin on a beautiful property. The pictures do not lie. Unfortunately, it is not well maintained or clean: window sills full of dead bugs, toads under the beds, dirty floors, filthy dishes, stained kitchen towels, cobwebs on every doorway and decoration, bugs in the beds, nasty grills, and mice in the cabinets. On top of that, customer service was terrible. I have placed more than 10 phone calls to get a refund and am getting the run around. Corydon was beautiful and hospitality at local establishments was great. I would visit the area again, but would not recommend the cardinal house.
This place is amazing! I scoured the Internet for cabins in Southern Indiana that could accommodate 12-13 guys, and this was one of the few that could actually do that. It was for a bachelor party, and we had trouble picking our jaws up off the floor all weekend. The place is unbelievably spacious, with a huge living area, giant wrap around porch, and the kitchen. Let's talk about the kitchen. It's got a loooong island that can fit six guys all doing food prep at the same time, and the island is basically a giant cutting board so that helps. It also has a monstrous, professional sized, stove that you could probably cook twenty meals on at once, no joke. And since the party always ends up in the kitchen, there was still room for the people gathering around the keg, or those just hanging out and being nostalgic.
Outside there is an insane amount of room to do basically whatever you want. Even with the two fire pits, we had room for cornhole, frisbee, fishing, grilling, and one of the most intense games of wiffleball this side of the Ohio River has ever seen.
The Blue River is right there, like, RIGHT there. Just be mindful, as there is a little drop off before the water.
The only negative I could possibly give this place was the beds. They are beds in a technical sense, but if you have a bad back you might be a little sore in the morning. Honestly, we had no problem dealing with that because this place is THAT good.
My family just had to sell the lake cottage this past year, and this cabin had all the right smells and creaks to put me in a very happy place.
I took one step in the door and said "we're coming back." Check this place out for yourselves, and I 100% guaruntee you won't regret it.
Ps if you feel like perusing an issue of National Geographic during your stay, they have every issue, I think maybe ever. For real, they filled multiple book cases. It was crazy.
