Overview

About the property

Cottage, studio + loft, 1 bath. Sleeps 1-4 on 2 beds (6 with 2 fold-away futons)

In the Hawaiian language, a kipuka is a kind of oasis. It can be an island of forest surrounded by lava fields, saved from volcano goddess Pele's embrace. Or a kipuka can be an opening within a forest, or even a dwelling, a home within the forest. This is our Kipuka -- a cottage, a vacation home for you here on Hawai'i Island (''the Big Island''). We look forward to sharing it with you, and we welcome your questions.v=9icohy0gyqY

Kipuka Cottage is in a native Hawaiian rainforest just a 7-minute drive from amazing Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, where you can see the steaming glowing summit crater of Kilauea volcano. There are miles of hiking trails through lush forest and rocky volcanic landscapes. There are ancient historic sites, a volcano museum, art galleries, good restaurants, a wonderful community farmers market (don't miss the used-book store) -- and even a small bowling alley! A black-sand beach where turtles sunbathe is 30-minute drive in one direction. And 30 minutes in the other direction is the fun, funky, historic town of Hilo.

About Bill Harby

We are your hosts, husband and wife Bill Harby and Marie-France Robert. Bill is an American freelance travel writer, editor and photographer who has lived in Hawai‘i for 31 years. He is happy to answer your questions about Hawai‘i. Marie-France is Swiss-Canadian, and works as the senior health, safety, and environment specialist for a multi-national company. We met in 1975 in Neuchatel, Switzerland, Marie-France’s hometown. After two memorable days together, we lost track of each other for 32 years. Then, after several marvelous miracles, we married in 2009, and now call both Volcano and Montmollin, Switzerland home.

Why Bill Harby chose Volcano

Bill designed and helped build this lovely (if he does say so himself) cottage because he fell in love with the Volcano area when he first visited it as a child. Years later, while living in Honolulu, he learned that this beautiful patch of secluded forest near Volcano village was available, so he bought it and began drawing plans for his dream home. Then he convinced his good friend Terence, a master carpenter to build it. Kipuka Cottage is the result. Bill lived there full-time for 7 years before getting married. He and his wife Marie-France now divide their time between Volcano and Switzerland. One day they will retire at Kipuka, but for now they are happy to share it with people who love custom architecture and interior design in a secluded dramatic natural setting.

What makes this cottage unique

Custom architecture and interior design. Secluded, but Volcano village and Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park are just minutes up the road.

Gorgeous cottage in the rainforest!

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying here - a hidden gem nestled in the rainforest, close to Volcano National Park and other popular destinations. Peaceful, clean, amazing architecture! Loved waking up in the loft looking out over the forest! Would highly recommend!

An amazing getaway just moments from Hawaii Volcanoes NP!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed in Kipuka Cottage for several days during our Hawaii honeymoon. If you plan on exploring Hawaii Volcanoes NP or anything on the Hilo side of the Big Island, there is no better location than Kipuka Cottage. The beautiful timber framing of the cottage, ample natural light from all of the windows, and private rainforest setting all contribute to the ambience of this unique home. The house was filled with eclectic touches of art and decoration and you're in for a surprise at every turn! Unlike most vacation rentals, Kipuka Cottage truly reflects the character of both the location and the owners. We absolutely LOVED the wood stove, and made good use of it to warm up on those chilly rainforest evenings. Bill was a consummate host, and was very communicative before our visit to make sure we knew everything we needed to know about the home. The cottage is just a few short minutes from the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes NP, which made it easy to return "home" throughout our days at the park to rest and relax in between sightseeing. Kilauea was putting on quite a show when we visited, I highly recommend visiting the Jagger Museum overlook of Halema'uma'u Crater after dark to view the glow (and perhaps lava fountains) of the lava lake! Amazing!

Charming cottage but difficult to find at night

  • 3 of 5

Some odor in the house caused an asthma attack - both my son & I. Bedding should be updated. Difficult night. The next day when we were able to open the windows, we were able to enjoy this lovely property

Owner's Response: Aloha Anon, We're happy you found our little cottage lovely. But we're sorry the dampness of a house in a rainforest caused you discomfort. Humidity is a fact of life at this elevation in our beautiful lush rainforest. Between guests we always run a de-humidifier, and of course, every new party gets fresh sheets. All the best from Volcano and our crew at Kipuka Cottage, Bill

Great Cottage in the Rainforest

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights and it was by far the most beautiful and unique place we stayed at during our Hawaii adventure.

Bill provided everything we needed and was a wonderful host. It was incredible to wake up with a view of trees all around you and to have a nice soak in the tub while feeling immersed in the rain forest. Very cool and we highly recommend it. All you need to bring are groceries and wine :)

The place is also located very close to Volcano National Park.

Perfect Seclusion

  • 5 of 5

We loved this wonderful, quirky, eclectic, private cottage in the forest. It is located close to Volcanoes National Park, which was where we spent most of our daylight hours, rain or shine. It was fully stocked with anything and everything you could need and we appreciated that leftover dry goods from other guests were left for us to use - coffee filters, cooking oils, spices and even a few cans of soda left in the refrigerator. There were plenty of blankets for the cool nights and wood for the wood stove. The library was wonderful - plenty of books on all different manner of subjects.

Unfortunately, we had a lot of rain during our stay but that didn't stop us from enjoying our time in Volcano - we were in the rainforest, after all. We had a little difficulty starting a fire due to the dampness, but eventually were successful. The rain falling provided a peaceful background to us relaxing and unplugging (mostly) from daily life. The wi-fi connection was much appreciated so we could follow our beloved Cubs on their quest for the World Series title. We also appreciated all of the unique touches of this perfect getaway - from the artwork on the walls to the sculptures throughout the property to the unique hooks in the bathroom. They added to the ambiance of this cottage in the woods and we loved discovering them.

Mahalo for sharing your slice of heaven with us! We would not hesitate to rent here again and and look forward to our future return.

Relaxing treehouse in Volcano, Hawaii

  • 5 of 5

The Kipuka Cottage in Volcano was an excellent place to stay. What a feeling to awaken in the sleeping loft at the top of the forest! Exotic birds casually walk through the property seeking their breakfast as you make your Kona coffee. It doesn't get any better than this. The house itself is well equipt with a modern kitchen, nice bath, a comfortable living area, and many wonderful books about the big island. The spiral staircase can be an adventure, but it is manageable. The house is literally 5 minutes drive to the entrance of Volcano National Park, with all its wonders including the erupting Kilauea volcano, steam vents, hikes through lava tubes, treks across solidified lava lakes (Kilauea-Iki crater), and much more. It is best to purchase provisions before heading up, as shopping is limited in Volcano village. There are restaurants in Volcano, but I cannot comment because we ate in. Bill replies promptly to all messages, and his property manager is available if needed. I highly recommend the Kipuka Cottage in Volcano.
