About this property

Idyllic Paradise Retreat w/ River Gardens 1100 SqFt 2BR/Full Kitchen/Pool/HotTub

This is real Costa Rica—not the House Hunter’s International version. It’s all verdant mountains, soaring volcano giants, incredible nature, and farm land—we’re in coffee country! All our neighbors are Ticos (that’s the nickname Costa Rican’s call themselves.)

We live on a finca we've named San Miguel del Rio Oro. But what in the world is a finca? In Spanish it means “farm.”
Now it's not like a huge ranch in Texas (and we know about those because we're both multi-generational Texans.) It's not like a vast wheat field in Kansas, or the corn fields of Iowa. No, it’s not that kind of farm. Maybe you should think more about Old MacDonald’s place. But put it in a river valley. At 3800 feet. In Costa Rica. Now you’re getting the idea.

We consider ourselves to be gentlemen farmers—that means we don’t have to farm, but we like to tinker as a hobby. Of course, we also have our good-natured pups. And yes, we have a few chickens…and geese…and turkeys. They strut around striking the most delightful poses. We have the sweetest dairy goats you’ve ever seen. So you’ll get to meet our “girls”—the 5 dairy goats that we milk every morning so we can make all kinds of artisan cheeses and homemade ice creams. My favorite ice cream flavor is Pineapple Habanero with Macadamia Nut Brittle. Yum! You can try your hand at milking if you’d like—it’s free. You can also take a cheese making class if you’d like—it’s not free. Ha!

We don’t provide breakfast, but we do provide you with delicious farm-fresh eggs, milk, and cheese—all made right here--so you can whip up whatever your heart desires in your fully-equipped kitchen. We have a rotating crop of vegetables in the garden. If you smile real pretty and ask real nice, I'll bet we'll let you pick some of them to use in your meal preparations.

We say living in Costa Rica is lot like a return to the 50s and 60s—things are slower paced, everyone knows everyone, and there’s time to enjoy simpler things. It’s the Pura Vida attitude you’ve heard tell of. It really is great. But that relaxed Pura Vida attitude has it’s flip side—things get done when they get done. What does that mean? Well, after the rainy season (oops, the tourist board says I’m supposed to call it the “green season”) the road that leads to the house can be a bit bumpy. Just do what all the Ticos do: Smile, wave at the neighbors, hang on, and just keep driving.

Speaking of neighbors, we do have some, but since we live at the end of the road and we have 3 1/2 acres you’ll never hear or see them. Well except maybe during coffee-picking season when they head up into the nearby fields in the early morning.

As long as we’re being completely open with each other, let’s talk about all that nature you came to see. You will be surrounded by it as we are living in the midst of primary rainforests. So you won’t have to look very hard to see it. We basically live outdoors most of the time because the climate is so perfect year-round. But that also means that “nature” comes right up to meet you. It is so cool to see a toucan so close you could touch it. However, while we strive to keep everything spic and span, you should know that you may find the occasional creepy-crawler come to pay his respects also.

Seriously, we love our life here. And we fully expect that you will love your time here as well.

So Good I Want to Move There
Four of us were in Costa Rica and moved around 8 nights. This was our favorite stay. The grounds are super cool, albeit in need of a power washing when wet season is over. The unit worked out perfectly for us. The town is a classic small CR town and we shopped for food and grilled out. We went to the carniceria and vegetable stand they recommended as well as a panaderia and a good grocery store. We felt like locals and that is always special when that can happen. We also too Mike and Michael up on their liqueur and cheese tasting. All four of us LOVED that and could have sat and talked to the guys all night. One of us bought Mike's cookbook. We loved so much about our stay that we seriously felt we would love to live there ourselves. If we did we would want to "hang" with these guys.

A Complete WOW
This place was a 20 from start to finish. The pictures do not do it justice There was a wonderful welcome bag and they had left two beers and a half a dozen eggs get us started with. And that was just the beginning. The trails are wonderful, Jacuzzi fantastic. My fiancé and I fell asleep every night to the sounds of the running water from the brook. It was peaceful, tranquil, and very relaxing. I am I couldn’t give this place a higher recommendation. Mike and Michael where is the perfect host

Superb in all aspects. The location and the hosts, Mike and Michael, are all a visitor to Costa Rica could want. The property teems with gorgeous flowers, birds and trails along the banks of the river. This is indeed a secluded haven in Costa Rica's Ag region. Everything associated with the property is exactly as described (maybe a bit under stated). Mike and Michael are full of area information and extremely helpful in steering guests in the right direction. This is a jewel in the Orosi Region and is highly recommended. We will return!

About the host

Host profile image
First of all, we’re two cool guys! We're Mike and Michael.
Michael spent years as the director of an IT company, and I retired from a life in Medicine. We've got 3 grown kids and 7 grandkids.

We decided to retire early rather than work ourselves to death. We also realized we were ready for some adventure, so we began to look at retiring outside the USA. We happily chose Costa Rica, and we plan never to leave.

Costa Rica is a world full of surprises. Even after years of living here, we continue to be surprised. Our latest eye-opener is not found in a thing but rather in a revelation: Why we stay in Costa Rica.

We came for the rainforests, but we stay for the national parks.
We came for the nature, but we stay for the arts.
We came for the volcanoes, but we stay for the lakes.

We came for the wildlife, but we stay for the people.

The huge biodiversity of this tiny land is truly an amazing wealth. However, we’ve found that the real treasure of the country is in the hearts of the kind people.

We came for the beaches, but we stay for the mountains.
I find it a shame that vast hoards swarm to the sandy strands like so many hatchling sea turtles and never look up to soar with the eagles on our mountain tops. I believe when Zeus tired of Olympus, it was here he came for summer vacation.

We came for the coffee, and we stay for the coffee.

Java. A cup of Joe. Liquid bliss. COFFEE! I never even drank coffee before. It had no appeal to me. But Costa Rican coffee is of the highest quality.
Forget the Kona and the Jamaica Blue Mountain. Tell Juan Valdez to pack up that burro and high-tail it. High-end Costa Rican coffee stands out like a steeple in a flat landscape. Come to think of it, that’s a really good image—drinking, nay imbibing it, is almost a religious experience.

We can’t wait to see what new surprises greet us tomorrow.

Why they chose this property

We traveled the whole of Costa Rica for three years looking for our "Goldilocks spot"--you know, the place that was "just right."
Certainly all of Costa Rica is gorgeous, but the Orosi Valley is Costa Rica’s secret gem. We have so much to do right around here that no one ever sees it all in only one week. And with a perfect climate—average daily temps in the mid 70’s—the area is perfect for adventure tours, birdwatching, other escapades with nature, or just relaxing. By being smack dab in the middle of the country, you’ll have easy access to any other adventures you may want that are outside our quaint valley.

But be forewarned: your private, green, energy efficient hideaway in the mountains will be so seductive and comfy, you may never want to leave.

What makes this property unique

There’s a local legend about the river, the Rio Oro, that passes through the middle of our property: If you drink from its crystal waters, you’ll never be able to leave the Orosi Valley. So we have a big cupful every day—you’re welcome to join us.
