Woods Landing Guest Cabin on the Big Laramie River

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,200 sq ft
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Cabin, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6-8)

The River Guest House, one of several historic log cabins, at the Woods Landing Resort, is nestled in the cottonwoods, right on the bank of the Big Laramie River. This cozy cabin offers three bedrooms, one bath, newly remodeled (2011) full kitchen with cooking utensils and dishes, laundry room, and a large mudroom. The cabin is heated with a forced air furnace, along with a woodstove. The Big Laramie River is right out the back door and Jelm Mountain is across the road. Sit out on the front porch and watch the mule deer wander by, along with an occasional moose, elk, bobcat, coyote, or black bear. Mountain biking and hiking trails start on our property and head west, up the hill to join up with miles of trails and roads, in the Medicine Bow National Forest.

The Woods Landing Resort is a historic roadside retreat located at the base of the Medicine Bow Mountains, approximately 27 miles southwest of Laramie, Wyoming. Originally a saloon built by Colonel Samuel Wood in 1883, Woods Landing became a regular stop for lumberjacks, freighters and stage drivers because it was at the intersection of three roadways. In 1932, the owners built a dancehall and a few cabins for vacationers, including the River Guest House. The dancehall was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

Today the Woods Landing Resort offers a full service restaurant, bar and dancehall, as well as a general store, post office, and cabins. The bar and dancehall is a regular meeting place for area ranchers and dudes, who come from the entire Big Laramie River valley, to enjoy our Saturday night dances. The café serves up the best burgers, shakes, and pie in the Valley. Besides the River Guest House, other lodging at the Woods Landing Resort includes a new luxury log cabin duplex, six rustic log cabins, and 10 recreational vehicle spaces. In all, we can sleep about 36 people, in addition to recreational vehicle spaces so we are a perfect venue for family reunions, weddings, and just plain fun.

During the summer months, you can bird-watch, raft or fly fish on the river or on one of the numerous plains and mountain lakes, within 10 miles of Woods Landing. Lake Hattie is a favorite lake for windsurfing in the summer and ice-fishing in the winter. You can hike or bike right from your cabin or drive to one of many trailheads, within a 10-mile radius of the resort. There are also hundreds of miles of ATV roads close by. Hunting for elk and mule deer is a favorite part-time in the fall. During the winter months, there are miles and miles of groomed snowmobile and cross-country ski trails, just a few miles up the road. Laramie, home of the University of Wyoming, is only a short half hour drive from Woods Landing. Visit the many art galleries, museums, or the Territorial Park during an outing to town.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for a most excellent time. My family Clan "the Planks" stayed at Woods Landing July 19 - July 26. My family stayed in the house. It was very clean and comfortable. The whole vacation was enhanced by your resort. Sitting around the camp fire with my brothers, sisters, children, grand children and parents will be remembered for the rest of our lives.

Thanks you.

Wonderfully quite, peaceful, home away from away home!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I loved our stay in this awesome home on the Big Laramie River. We have family in Laramie and were traveling with our two 6 year old dogs. Our niece works on a ranch that is not too far away and stayed with us one night with her two dogs - still plenty of room! There is no grocery store nearby (a little store that is not always open is next to the gas pumps if you need condiments) so bring your food, especially if your trip includes a Tuesday thru Thursday stay because the restaurant is closed these days. Also, they do not serve breakfast at the restaurant so just plan ahead and you'll be good to go. We found one walking trail with a fairly steep grade and no trees for shade but I took it in the morning on several occasions - the view was breathtaking. So if you're looking for a place to reconnect with nature and your family (bring board games and a deck of cards!) this is for you. If you're looking for luxurious resort then we would recommend a different destination. The owners were great too!

Neat cabin right on the river

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Woods Landing. This place and the area has great nostalgic value for me and my family. We have been vacationing in the area for over fifty years, so they basically cant keep us away! The cabin is well situated in a shady spot directly on the Big Laramie river, so just step out the door walk a few feet and you are fly fishing for rainbow trout! Everything you need is provided in the cabin. Just when you think its not provided, open another cabinet or drawer and there it is! We definitely recommend this pretty and peaceful place. Now for a couple of negative comments; The owners seriously need to take care of the water heater problem. the tankless system does not work. there is no way to regulate scalding hot from freezing cold regardless of special instructions!! we tried everything!! the other issue is the mattresses. They need to be replaced with much higher quality. People expect better, and it really would not be that big of an investment.

A fun spot!

  • 4 of 5

This cabin is part of a small campground/resort along the river so there is a convenient post office, bar, restaurant, gas and tiny store on the premises. There were several small wooden cabins along the river near this cabin and some campers parked further down. We checked in after 6pm so checked in at the bar. There was some slight confusion as all the staff is not up to speed on payments thru Homeaway so it wasnt clear to them that I had already paid. But I showed them my receipt and they were very accommodating.

The cabin is very "campy" which means it reminds me of the old seasonal camps on the lake where I grew up...old furniture, old quilts, campy smell. Complete with a shower with intermittent hot water. There is hot water, its just difficult to control and manage in the shower. The wifi in the cabin was somewhat intermittent as well and we found the wifi in the restaurant to be a bit stronger. We had no at&t signal at all, but we knew to expect this.

The river is directly behind the cabin but the water was rushing too fast for us to even consider a swim. Plus I think it would have been way too cold (mid June.) There really isn't a beachy type access along the river behind the cabin anyway. There is a campfire pit beside the house so we roasted marshmellows each evening. We enjoyed watching the prairie dogs and bunnies in the front yard.

We ate dinner at the restaurant on the property and it was delicious. They served breakfast only on Sunday. The restaurant/cafe sits diagonal across the road from the cabin so very convenient. We try to avoid cooking on vacation so we loved this.

Everyone at the bar/restaurant/store were kind to us. We did have one tiny issue at the cabin, one of the smoke detectors was chirping because the battery must've been going dead. We let them know at the store and it was taken care of that same day. Since the cabin is on the campground premises, if you have any problems at all with the cabin there are people right there that can help you. My son left a piece of equipment in the cabin when we left and Sue (owner) was very kind to offer to mail it back to us.

We found the whole property to be very clean and well-kept/maintained. We would stay again here for sure.

We highly recommend the drive to Saratoga. It's a beautiful drive through Medicine Bow. A stop at the small town of Centennial is fun. We also highly recommend the nearby Deerwood Wild Horse Sanctuary!!
