The cottage is newly built, so 2014 is its first year.
'Logwood' is named after one of the trees that surrounds it - whose heartwood creates the only natural dye still in use. This dye was once so valuable that privateers would capture the ships that were taking this cargo back to Europe.
Anyway, back to the cottage !...To build the cottage we used as many recycled materials as possible. The doors are all old and many of which have been left with their original paint work. The outside is covered in wooden shingles in the traditional Caribbean style.
We built the cabin in an area of trees, selecting the spot partly for its view, but also because there was a small clearing in the woods ( wonderful that we didnt have to cut many down!) and it was just asking for a little something. On a hill, and built on stilts the cabin overlooks the trees down a long valley that runs to the back of English Harbour, about 7 miles away. We have tried to preserve this little wood, so have not made a driveway to the cottage - It is a little remote, but only a 2 minute walk from the car parking area, through the trees. You will need a 4WD to get to the cabin.
Although the cottage looks old fashioned - that is the only thing that is traditional about it! It is totally independent and is run only by solar energy, with 24 volt lights, pumps and fridge. There is 110v power as well with USA sockets. The rain water is collected from the roof, and is heated with solar.
The bedroom is large, 16 ft X 16 ft : white stained wooden floor, and a double 4 poster bed fitted with a mosquito net. There are old louvred doors barn doors that slide open to a side balcony, and shutter doors opening onto the main front balcony. All the doors and windows have mosquito screens.
There is a large wardrobe with plenty of shelving and hanging space - a desk under the windows should you feel inspired to write or draw, and also wireless internet.
Off the bedroom is the open bathroom with large rain water shower, basin and low water usage loo.
Antigua is a low lying island - which in turn causes a low annual rainfall - so we need to be conscious of water usage.
The Balcony is 10 ft x 24ft and forms the living and dining areas. The kitchen opens up with wide doors so the whole side is open to the balcony and the dining table is in easy reach. There is a solar run fridge with a good size freezer and 4 burner propane gas stove with oven. The kitchen has all the utensils you will need - and basic larder items. We will supply groceries for your dinner and breakfast, should you feel like staying at home for your first night.
Some people seem to not see this note, so here it is again :
YOU NEED A 4WD, OR A VEHICLE THAT IS HIGH OFF THE ROAD TO GET THE THE CABIN .
I am originally from England, and have been living in the Caribbean for nearly 30 years. I work from home where I live with my very greedy dogs, ducks, chickens - and occasionally daughter !
Louise Sandiford purchased this cabin in 2014
The valley of Tranquil Farm is one of the last remaining rural areas of Antigua - although even we are now being reached and changed. So far its is still a wonderfully quiet backwater where the only sounds are the tree frogs and crickets and night, with the odd donkey and dogs from neighbouring farms. By day the same - just hold the tree frogs!
Its lovely to go to the beach all day, its lovely to feel the salt sting your skin - and you hair has never styled so well as when its full of salt! - but after a long day of sun and sea its also lovely to get back to a cool hillside, trees and countryside - and relax, with a glass of wine ... away from the sand thats in everything, and your salt damp and sticky clothes....
...until you need the next fix !
Louise's cabin in one word: Magical. Every detail in the design, decoration, and layout is tasteful, useful, and attractive. The outdoor shower is wondrous, perfect after a long day spent exploring. Quite honestly, as you lay in the balcony hammock at nighttime, a cool breeze in your face and nary a light in view, you will feel as if you've traveled to another planet, one of peace and quiet, calm, and tranquility. Highly Recommended.
I can't begin to tell you how special this cabin is! It's remote, romantic, and has every comfort you could imagine. We needed for nothing and would stay here again in a heartbeat!
Louise is a wonderful hostess and even provided some groceries(that were most appreciated) to get us started.
If you have an adventurous spirit you can't go wrong booking this cabin. I would recommend a few things for those who book here:
1. Rent a Jeep-We rented a Rav4 and bottomed out a few times while coming in and out of the property to the main road.
2. Ask Louise where she grocery shops-We went to 2 different stores (Crab something liquors and grocery and Bailey's I believe) but couldn't find what was necessary to make a proper meal. Louise left an amazing red sauce and shell pasta in the cabin for our first night but I couldn't find it in the stores that we went to.
I can't wait to stay again in the future!
My husband and I spent a week in this wonderful cabin at the end of May. In a word - blissful. The cabin is spotless and the decor is charming. Louise is a pleasure to deal with. All in all - an excellent experience.
This is truly a amazing place - off the grid yet with all the comforts one could imagine - ample solar hot water for showers, plenty of solar electric lighting/power, a full fridge/freezer, a well-equipped kitchen, a very comfortable bed with mosquito netting (although there were hardly any bugs!), and a delightful porch with dining table and chairs to lounge in! Quiet, secluded yet only 20-30 minute drive from English Harbor. Can't imagine staying anywhere else in Antigua! Moreover, Louise is a wonderful host - genuine, friendly, and generous. Why didn't we stay longer?!!!
I cannot say enough about the setting for this little abode in the middle of the Antiguan countryside. Lou is a saint and an amazing host; a friendly soul with a kind heart and a beautiful aesthetic for living well.
My favorite memory is one in which I noticed dark clouds coming over the mountainside on the first morning as I woke up. My friend Martin and I made coffee and sat on the porch, listening to the percussion of a million drops of water falling on the roof. The stillness had a residual quality that stayed with me throughout the day.
Lou's cottages are modest establishments that offer all the amenities you could ever need. There is internet, if you need it, but I'm confident that the serenity will provide more comfort to you than email or social media ever will.
The area is very quiet and peaceful, a wonderful place to relax. Not far away are the beaches on West Coast where the water colour is as blue as can be. The restaurants and nightlife and cafes of English harbour are 20 minutes away to the South. St. Johns with the market is 20 minutes to the North. Antigua is only roughly 10 miles by 12 miles, so it never far to anywhere really - but its nice to come back to the calm of the valley and enjoy the peace and quiet, but you do need a 4wd to get to us !
