Guestbook comments from the owner

We thought the website pictures of Hellnar looked lovely and when we actually arrived there we were even more impressed by the beauty of the location. We were lucky to see it at its best with the sun shining on the deep blue sea. We took many photos looking from the house to the church. The house was clean and well maintained, it was equipped with almost everything we needed for our stay. We dined at the tables (inside & out), enjoying the view as we ate: we spent very little time in the house as the weather was superb and the sun didn't go until very late. The bedrooms were comfortable and clean, with the peace and tranquility of the area we slept very well. Our first evening was spent exploring Hellnar and the harbour, we loved it. The following day we walked to Arnarstapi and took the Snow-cat up the glacier - we took great photos looking back down to the house. Definitely recommend this as a day out - watching the Arctic Terns on the cliffs was wonderful and we advise guests to explore the cliffs, the sea caves are magnificent. We drove to Stykkisholmur on our second day and took the birdwatching boat tour of the Breidafjordur, we saw all kinds of birds and would recommend this as a good trip. We drove back via north road of Snaefellsnes which was full of interesting places. Our final day was spent walking, we left our car at Malarril (10 - 15 mins from house) and went to view Londranagar. We then doubled back and walked the coast path to Dritvik and back, spending some time on the amazing beach at Djupalonssandur. This was another excellent day out - we didn't expect the weather to be too hot in Iceland ! We had to leave at 7am the next day as we were booked on the car ferry to the West Fjords. We honestly wish we had booked to stay longer at this house - we didn't want to leave ! There were just a couple things to mention - we brought our own bed linen, we knew we would not have time to put linen in the washing machine as we had an early ferry to catch so could not use the linen provided. We thought the house had a barbecue but we couldn't see one - luckily we had already bought a disposable one. We would love to stay here again if we were lucky enough to come back to Iceland and we would definitely recommend it to our friends and family.

Thanks,

Shelagh and Trevor

Wonderful cottage, beautiful landscape.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at cottage #5 for two nights. It was as promised - charming, and in an extraordinary landscape in the tiny "town" of Hellnar. We were two couples sharing the accommodation. As other reviewers have noted, the stairs leading upstairs are extremely steep - more like a ladder on a boat than actual stairs - and definitely not for anyone with any sort of mobility challenges. But the cottage was quaint, well equipped, and in a such a beautiful setting and a great home base to explore Snaefellsjokull. We walked to Arnarstapi on the hiking path through the lava field. We also ate at the Hellnar hotel restaurant, which was excellent, and saw the northern lights on our second evening. The old church near the property is beautiful and the ocean and mountain scenery can't be beat. There are no nearby grocery stores, so be sure you have what you need before you arrive (even paper towels, which we did not have). We bought groceries in Borgarnes. highly recommend this place!

A Homeaway Home

  • 4 of 5

A tastefully equipped, spacious house in quiet, beautiful surroundings. Only one thing: the steep half board stairs need to be replaced. Definitely!

Lovely cottage by the sea in Hellnar

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 thoroughly enjoyed our stay in cottage #5. It had everything we needed to cook homemade meals. The beds were super comfortable. The cottage has a direct view of the sea and a view of the mountain. Two cafes are within walking distance. A wonderful hiking trail is down by the sea that takes you to the town of Arnastapi. The stairs in the cottage are steep as the owner mentions and we got used to them after a day of training our feet to walk correctly. However they may not be suitable for very young children or elderly. Overall we have nothing to complain about and felt we got our money's worth. The location and view and quaint cottage atmosphere are much to be desired in Iceland. The cottage nailed all of those wish list items. The town of Hellnar is lovely.

Great stay

  • 5 of 5

We loved this place! It was nicely outfitted, beds were comfortable and the place is very nicely furnished and appointed. The setting is beautiful and the restaurant at FossHotel Hellnar is excellent. The only drawback or difficult thing in the place is the very steep staircase to the bedrooms. It would be tough for an older person. Otherwise we highly recommend this cottage.

Stairs of death! Adorable cottage!

  • 4 of 5

We loved the quaintness of this cottage! The house was stocked with towels, kitchen needs and items that made you feel at home! The bedrooms are all upstairs and share walls! The stairs down to the main floor are scary! Especially if you need to use the facilities in the night! Watch the exterior doors during your stay! The wind can be brutal!! And forms a vacuum chamber between front and back doors! Host was most accommodating and available. We didn't enjoy the cleaning as a check out process as it was very detailed. However you may have an option for a cleaning service if you do not go in Feb/March like we did! And always ALWAYS check the road reports here! We left the cottage to an inch of snow and ended up driving in THREE feet of snow on our way to Borgarnes/Reykjavik!

Sehr gemütliches Ferienhaus in schöner Lage

  • 5 of 5
