The area now know as Bear Creek was home to the Rittenhouse Gap mines, a part of the Mid Atlantic Iron Belt The mines date back to the 1800's and the time of Thomas Edison, who was drawn to the mines to develop a cost effective means of extracting iron ore from crushed rock. The raiload servicing the mines was known as the Catasaqua-Fogelsville Railroad. It was built in the 1850's as a way to transport iron ore to furnaces along the Lehigh River, including Lock Ridge Furnace in Alburtis, where the ore was used to make cannon and machinery. The Rittenhouse Gap mines were abandoned after World War I when the iron industry was drawn to the upper Midwest.

About Owner/manager

Originally from Vancouver Island, Canada. Travel and hospitality has always been in my blood. Opening the farm to guests traveling from all over the world is fun and rewarding. Inquire about having an outdoor reunion, wedding at the farm. We look forward to your reservation and stay.

Owner/manager purchased this farmhouse in 2007

Why Owner/manager chose Alburtis

The farm being located 1.6 miles from a ski resort was definately one of the reasons to purchase the farm. Not to mention the close proximity to New York, Philadelphia, Atlantic City and Washington DC. Recreation is abundant in all four seasons. Cycling, hiking, skiing, snowboarding are just a few sports. At the farm there is a nature trail to walk around, the fire-pit, BBQ, and front porch faces south to enjoy the sunrises and sunsets. Having some chickens and sheep makes the farm a perfect getaway after trips into the cities. A work assignment in NYC or Philadelphia for the day makes the farm a perfect retreat at the end of the day.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Experience staying at a private farm with sheep meandering in the pastures without the responsibility of taking care of the animals. Almost 10 private acres with a walking trail around the perimeter of the farm and space to relax and unwind all day long. The farmhouse is simple and uncluttered with all the amenities to enjoy in all seasons. The farm is located 7-10 minutes from grocery shopping and minutes from nature and sight seeing. Will is caretaker/ co-owner of the farm so there is always someone available to field questions or be of assistance during your stay.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Great farmhouse

  • 4 of 5

We had six adults and there was plenty of room without tripping over each other. The heaters in the dining room and upstairs bedroom helped the second night as it was a bit chilly. We had a bit of trouble finding the house since we arrived after dark and the maps had us go to the end of the road (past the house). Kitchen was well stocked with pots, pans, glassware and table settings, could of used a few more bath towels in the upstairs bathroom. Dining room table leaves did not stay together...we were constantly pushing them together.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review. We have plenty of extra clean towels stocked, guests just need to ask either John or Will. The antique dining room table is an accordion style, just be gentle with it, it's served hundreds of guests and hundreds more if cared for by the guests.

Hemphill Farm

  • 4 of 5

John the owner manger was very helpful and made things very easy after having a phone conversation. My only suggestion would be to have a print out of a few written help things like how to turn on some of the lights, the TV and how to avoid blowing a fuse in the bath room. Very clean and cozy.

Beds were firm. No problem with heat in winter. Close to Bear Creek Resort less five minutes.

We eat there the first night but expensive and very loud and noisey in grill bar.

  • 5 of 5

This is a cozy farmhouse we went up for the weekend with our 3 children ages ( 6, 3 & 1 ) they loved the animals, we made some fires and relaxed. We went to the Lehigh Valley Zoo Winter Lights and it was lovely. We really enjoyed our stay and it so quiet so you could get a good night sleep the beds were comfortable! We will be going back in the future.
