The Song of the Jungle is built high up on the hillside that overlooks the jungles, mountains and valley. It is at located at the end of a county lane and is surrounded by thousands of acres of tropical rainforest. It is 1/4 mile off the main road so is free of traffic noise and the general hum of people noise. You can hear the river below , the ocean waves breaking and the jungle song birds.
The Song of the Jungle is secluded , private and very quiet. It is an 'ohana' cottage unit built at the far side of the main house so is tucked away, safe and cosy. It has it's own entrance and privacy including private garden areas. It looks out onto the jungle, gardens and extensive unobstructed mountain and valley views. It is ideal for one or two persons or a family with a child. It is comprised of about 1000 sq ft and has four rooms plus 2 lanais. There is a large bedroom/sitting area with a queen bed. French doors lead from the bedroom out onto a separate enclosed lanai that overlooks the valley and jungle. This enclosed lanai has a bistro table for romantic dining and daybed for those who wish to sleep watching the stars. The kitchen area is medium sized with a full fridge, hotplate and toaster oven. It has an enclosed outdoor lu'au area as well with a BBQ and propane cook stove/oven. The indoor bathroom has a shower but no tub. There is also a privately located outdoor tigerwood shower in the garden area. The kitchen looks out onto the extensive garden area.
The 'Song' is 1/4 mile from a grocery store hub, sushi girl takeout, gift store and beachfront.
The Song of the Jungle is a quiet and peaceful world that lives up to its name. You wake up to a symphony of tropical birds mingled with the distant sounds of the river below and the ocean waves breaking . The enlcosed lanai is a wonderful place to enjoy your morning breakfast surrounded by the tropical gardens and unobstructed mountain and valley views where white egrets glide midst the palms. A 1/4 mile walk down the county lane takes you to the corner grocery store , sushi girl takeout, and beautiful Wainiha Beach. A quick drive or a 20-30 minute walk will get you to some of the best beaches in the world: Tunnels, Ke'e, Lumahai! as well as the famous Kalalau Trail. Three miles away is Hanalei town where shopping, the restaurants, and even a little night action can be found in a cozy beachtown atmosphere. This property is a homestay. #9481

.I moved to Kauai with my daughter in 2004 for health reasons. My health greatly improved ( Kauai is good for that) and my daughter went back to the mainland to university. This home seemed a bit big for me alone so I began sharing it with travelers , guest house style. I now am blessed to meet amazing people from all around the world. People who chose this place tend to be unique, gentle souls who fit into the local atmosphere with ease and grace. It has been a lot of fun for me.
dawn mcconnell purchased this bungalow in 2004
I never chose a vacation rental however I chose the house here because I am a world traveller and this place is one of the most amazing places, on many levels , that I have encountered in my life. As the locals say, it has' good mana'
I am a writer and a photographer .The possibilities are of what can be captured on film and in words here are , each day, endlessly, timelessly fresh. The ocean, the jungle and the rivers are all right there. And the weather, well, pretty darn easy to take.
Thank you so much for the wonderful stay. We had a great time in the Song of the Jungle. It was so peaceful to sit on the lanai and watch the palms sway and listen to the crickets at night. We even enjoyed the downpours of rain because we got to read on the lanai and listen to the rain hitting the leaves. We also loved watching the geckos catch bugs on the screen.
Our favorite things that we did while we were here were:
Hiking Ke'e beach to Hanakopiai Falls, the botanical gardfens ( Lumahuli) hiking the Moalepe Trail, eating at the Mediteranean Gourmet. Postcards Cafe and the Mexican/ Brazilian place in Hanalei. We also loved the smoothies form Banana Joes. We look forward to returning
This place is even better than the pictures and the reviews. After a few days on the southern part of Kauai, my husband and I came to Jungle Song for the last part of our first time to Hawaii. As we drove up the road I thought, oh I hope it's okay, I hope it's okay. Well, at the end of a red dirt road, up the hill from the "main" road we landed at Jungle Song. I felt my heart open and my hopes answered. Jungle Song is located on beautiful grounds that for me were/are magical. Birds, river sounds, wind in the trees, mountains in the not-far-distance, truly I felt like I was come home to a place where I was truly meant to be.
Dawn greeted us warmly and showed us the place and then disappeared to let us discover her lovely three roomed beautiful place. As others have said, the beds were comfortable, the outdoor shower divine, the kitchen and other room delightful, AND there was a washer and dryer. I loved the colorful dishes, pillows and cool stuff that decorates the unit. I found the kitchen supplies good and the space easy to"be" in.
Due to a family situation that required using her landline, I came to know Dawn quite well and she is a warm and caring and delightful human being. I miss her.
The beaches are wonderful and close, Hanalei has great restaurants, ahh, but to sit on the porch and feel the air and see the mountains and smell the smells, tand to listen to the sounds, for me this was truly the vacation I dreamed of. I hated to leave and started saving to go back the day we come home. Aloha.
Very nice house in a great location if you want to enjoy that part of the island.
Dawn is very very helpful and answered all our needs very quickly. The outdoor shower is definitely a great add-on.
The house could use some refreshing. Some small details could be improved: very few stuff in the kitchen, one has to fight with the salt mill, ... But overall a very nice place
We just enjoyed 4 days in Dawn's home. Her place was beautiful nestled up the mountain at the end of a road. This is not your typical Hawaiian condo at the beach. It's a bird sanctuary surrounded by lush tropical forest. We spent the majority of our time in the sun room admiring the landscape. She calls this place Song of the Jungle for a reason. Waking up to the sounds of the birds each morning was a special treat. The weather was perfect and we were able to see stars at night in full display. This home is for those that really appreciate old Hawaii and the sounds of nature , with incredible backdrops of the mountains of Kauai. Our 6th trip to Hawaii and this was our favorite place to stay. We appreciated the advice from Dawn on good beaches and restaurants which made our stay in Hanalei even better. We saw a monk seal sunbathing at a beach she recommended. We will be back and will recommend Dawn's home to our friends and family!
The property has everything you need. Outdoor shower a fun extra.
There are indeed songs of the jungle to be heard night and day at Song of the Jungle. A beautiful location off the beaten path, but close to everything you'll want to see or do. The suite has a great design, and the bed by the lanai is perfect for sleeping - practically under the stars - or for just lounging with a good book. Outdoor shower is excellent. Kitchen has everything you need for cooking in - which was always our first choice, not to cut costs, but to enjoy the bird songs at dusk and enjoy star gazing while we ate. Dawn is personable and helpful. Highly recommend!!!
Dawn's Song Of The Jungle is just that, Dawn MacConnel's song of Kauai's North Shore. We were in the trees and ferns and flowers, with the geckos and birds, a single toad awaiting us in her glorious outdoor shower (he/she hopped away), Kauai's mountains beyond, and subtle touches of beauty (white lace curtains tied in loops) inside our home, with everything substantial we need throughout. Exploring Hanalei and Kauai beckons,
yes, of course, or you might just want to stay home in the jungle's song. Mahalo, Dawn, mahalo.
3 Miles from Hanalei Town where there is boutique shopping, diverse restaurants from fish tacos and burgers to high end dining and a public beach with surf lessons and picnicing. We are also 2 miles from the Na Pali coast with the Kalalau hiking trail. We are within 1/4 mi to 5 miles from many covelike beaches with snorkeling , swimming, surfing, and all that.
