Photos and Description of this Wainiha holiday bungalow

1 bedroom cottage with mountain valley and jungle views.

The Song of the Jungle is built high up on the hillside that overlooks the jungles, mountains and valley. It is at located at the end of a county lane and is surrounded by thousands of acres of tropical rainforest. It is 1/4 mile off the main road so is free of traffic noise and the general hum of people noise. You can hear the river below , the ocean waves breaking and the jungle song birds.

The Song of the Jungle is secluded , private and very quiet. It is an 'ohana' cottage unit built at the far side of the main house so is tucked away, safe and cosy. It has it's own entrance and privacy including private garden areas. It looks out onto the jungle, gardens and extensive unobstructed mountain and valley views. It is ideal for one or two persons or a family with a child. It is comprised of about 1000 sq ft and has four rooms plus 2 lanais. There is a large bedroom/sitting area with a queen bed. French doors lead from the bedroom out onto a separate enclosed lanai that overlooks the valley and jungle. This enclosed lanai has a bistro table for romantic dining and daybed for those who wish to sleep watching the stars. The kitchen area is medium sized with a full fridge, hotplate and toaster oven. It has an enclosed outdoor lu'au area as well with a BBQ and propane cook stove/oven. The indoor bathroom has a shower but no tub. There is also a privately located outdoor tigerwood shower in the garden area. The kitchen looks out onto the extensive garden area.

The 'Song' is 1/4 mile from a grocery store hub, sushi girl takeout, gift store and beachfront.

The Song of the Jungle is a quiet and peaceful world that lives up to its name. You wake up to a symphony of tropical birds mingled with the distant sounds of the river below and the ocean waves breaking . The enlcosed lanai is a wonderful place to enjoy your morning breakfast surrounded by the tropical gardens and unobstructed mountain and valley views where white egrets glide midst the palms. A 1/4 mile walk down the county lane takes you to the corner grocery store , sushi girl takeout, and beautiful Wainiha Beach. A quick drive or a 20-30 minute walk will get you to some of the best beaches in the world: Tunnels, Ke'e, Lumahai! as well as the famous Kalalau Trail. Three miles away is Hanalei town where shopping, the restaurants, and even a little night action can be found in a cozy beachtown atmosphere. This property is a homestay. #9481

About dawn mcconnell

.I moved to Kauai with my daughter in 2004 for health reasons. My health greatly improved ( Kauai is good for that) and my daughter went back to the mainland to university. This home seemed a bit big for me alone so I began sharing it with travelers , guest house style. I now am blessed to meet amazing people from all around the world. People who chose this place tend to be unique, gentle souls who fit into the local atmosphere with ease and grace. It has been a lot of fun for me.

dawn mcconnell purchased this bungalow in 2004

Why dawn mcconnell chose Kauai

I never chose a vacation rental however I chose the house here because I am a world traveller and this place is one of the most amazing places, on many levels , that I have encountered in my life. As the locals say, it has' good mana'

What makes this bungalow unique

I am a writer and a photographer .The possibilities are of what can be captured on film and in words here are , each day, endlessly, timelessly fresh. The ocean, the jungle and the rivers are all right there. And the weather, well, pretty darn easy to take.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for the wonderful stay. We had a great time in the Song of the Jungle. It was so peaceful to sit on the lanai and watch the palms sway and listen to the crickets at night. We even enjoyed the downpours of rain because we got to read on the lanai and listen to the rain hitting the leaves. We also loved watching the geckos catch bugs on the screen.

Our favorite things that we did while we were here were:

Hiking Ke'e beach to Hanakopiai Falls, the botanical gardfens ( Lumahuli) hiking the Moalepe Trail, eating at the Mediteranean Gourmet. Postcards Cafe and the Mexican/ Brazilian place in Hanalei. We also loved the smoothies form Banana Joes. We look forward to returning

Relaxing peaceful escape!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had an amazing and relaxing week staying at the Song of the Jungle, and would love to come again! Every morning we awoke to jungle birds singing, without any noises of traffic or people. We loved having our breakfast out on the deck, listening to the birds and enjoying the solitude of nature. The bedrooms are perfect, with a total of 3 beds to choose from. The main bedroom has an extremely comfortable bed. There is another bed in the kitchen (there was some clicking noise from the fridge, but it was minimal. We liked how the curtains tied up during the day for light, and we could put them all down at night to make this room feel private), and the third bed on the lanai is very close to nature (your head is right next to the screen, so all of the nature noises - bird calls, breezes, rain - feels like it is right there). We really enjoyed having a kitchen, and outdoor grill, which was adequate to make meals to enjoy on the small deck. We appreciated that Dawn has kindly left items that were helpful for beach outings, such as a cooler with freezer packs in the freezer, beach chairs, snorkel gear, plenty of sets of beach towels, etc. Also that we could use the washer/dryer as needed. The outdoor shower is divine.

Just a last note - The location is perfect for people who love Hanalei/northern Kaua'i. It was very close to Tunnels beach , Ke'e beach (great sunset location). However, on the days where we explored the rest of the island (Waimea canyon, Poipu), it was quite a lot of driving. It is not easy to zip back and forth from the rental to town and back multiple times a day. The road from Hanalei to the rental is narrow and winds around continually, with several one lane bridges, and it requires a lot of concentration. This makes the area feel removed, which we loved. Driving this at night or in rain can be tricky. It could be dangerous if you are planning to go out each night in Hanalei and drink alcohol, etc.. However, it was perfect to spend the majority of our time locally and a few longer day trips. Also, the driveway is pretty steep and a bit slippery in the rain. We parked at the bottom and walked up as needed.

We loved Song of the Jungle. Dawn was sweet, friendly and kind. On the day that we checked out, she even let us come back in the late afternoon after our day at the beach, to take showers in the outdoor shower before we headed to the airport for a late flight home. We really appreciated this. We hope to be back!

Our Favorite Place on Kauia

  • 5 of 5

We loved Dawn's Song Of the Jungle and look forward to another visit with her in the near future. She has gone to much effort to provide a comfortable and beautiful place for those of us who discover this little piece for paradise. We did not mind the 24 hours of rain in the jungle. My husband says staying at Dawn's place was his favorite part of our two week vacation.

It was just what we needed!!

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful secluded location. A variety of beaches nearby, but not so close that we might feel like just another tourist. Peaceful sleeps amid amazing surroundings! Could have spent many more hours relaxing on the quiet deck enjoying the sweet bird songs, the mountain views, the enormous plants and the bright flowering trees. Great clean beach decor inside. A real home away from home. Thank-you to Dawn for making our stay in Kauai a wonderful one we will remember forever!

Just What We Needed

  • 5 of 5

Me and my friend came here for our relaxing adventurous getaway and enjoyed every minute. It's pretty far from the airport, but literally a perfect location if you want to locate off the grid. From the moment we stepped into the bungalow it felt like home! It's very peaceful and almost overwhelming the sounds of nature you hear all day and night. The switch on and off candles were a great touch for ambiance and made my dreams sweeter. We rotated beds every night since there are two that are right by the open windows and one stand alone queen bed closer to the bathroom (we definitely loved the beds located near the window best). It's very rare that u hear any disturbances aside from a car door closing. It was almost like I was sleeping with the Ocean waves or ambiance station on my Pandora app!

Last but not least, Dawn the hostess she was amazingly sweet and hospitable and we found ourselves talking to her for hours. So happy to have met her, such a warm person and empathetic. We will definitely be back with hopes to rent the whole bungalow :)

A cozy quiet time.

  • 5 of 5

This is our third time to the island and our third time staying with Dawn. Neither have ever been a disappointment. We moved into the Song of the Jungle from the Sea Turtle Cave when our freinds had left after their vacation. Cozy and quiet are the words we would use to describe the feeling. Always a joy to be able to lay back and enjoy the peace of the jungle at night and early in the morning. What a way to start and finish your day in paradise.

Can't wait to come back

  • 5 of 5

We loved the time we spent at 'Song of the Jungle.' It was such a beautiful and peaceful place- like staying in a treehouse. We did lots of hiking in the area, which was beautiful. Our only issue was that we heard the TV from the people above us one evening when we were sitting on the lanai. We went and asked them to turn it down and they did so immediately, so it was no problem. Everyone we met here, including the owner, were very friendly. We cannot wait to come back and are already thinking about our next trip. We were there at the time when two potential hurricanes came through the area. We had some heavy rain, but we just enjoyed listening to it from the lanai. Wonderful!

The property is a called an Ohana Bungalo which in Hawaii is similar to a mother in law unit. It functions completely on its own though and separate from the main portion of the home. It is at the back portion of the main home so has its own enclosed lanai area as well as its own garden area, bbq area, outdoor shower and washer and dryer
