The Shire of Montana

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,000 sq ft
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Adults Only Bungalow, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-3)

Trout Creek, MT- In a remote valley in Northwest Montana stay in a cabin patterned after the houses described in the Hobbit. More than a bed to sleep in and a stove to cook on, the Shire offers visitors a luxury lodging experience full of imagination, magic and yes, a truly unique retreat away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Surrounding the home is a village that comes to life at night with the magical display of lights from the cavalcade of mushrooms that line Hobbit Lane to the lighted mural of a whole Elven Village. The excitement is heightened when these fairy structures begin to light up one after the other at dusk. If you are really lucky...and quiet, you may see the shadows of Fairy creatures or catch a glimpse of them at home as they like to gather in a special pine tree near the creek and chat the night away...

The owners have made it a point to share a special treat with each guest upon their arrival- a very large and distinctive Trollhouse cookie made with special fairy dust! They also made sure that the kitchen is well equipped including a barbeque grill located on the deck outside. The entire Shire overlooks their scenic Whitepine Alpaca Ranch which boasts an old fashioned, red barn built in 1918 and a pond that brings in a myriad of waterfowl including Baldwin the resident Bald Eagle, blue herons and many diving osprey who dine on the Cutthroat trout living in the pond. Guests might also see deer, elk, and moose swimming in the pond, coyotes, and mountain lions along with the occasional bear or wolf.

The 1,000 square foot guest cottage comes complete with one king bedroom and a very small, guest bedroom. It has XM Radio, HD-Satellite flat screen TV with a Blu-Ray CD player with a library of books and CDs. There’s even a wood burning stove for those rare chilly nights; however the cottage stays a constant 55 degrees because it’s entirely underground. Phone service is available as there is NO cell service in and among Whitepine Shire.

The Shire of Montana is available for rental for $345 per night with a two night minimum and must be guaranteed with a major credit card. Because of the intimate details and hand crafted displays, no pets nor children are allowed. Advance reservations are required.

Enjoy the unique features of this magical dwelling, with an added twist of imagery and sophistication. The enchantment is almost spiritual and unlike anything you have ever seen before because it is such an uplifting experience... makes you feel like a kid again!

About The Owner

Steve & Chris Michaels are owners of the Shire and share their special place with Trolls, s, Elves and Fairies... and a whole lot more!

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2010

Why The Owner chose Trout Creek

Whitepine Valley has always been a special place visited by American Indians, Ravens and Wizards so the idea of a Shire was only natural.

What makes this cottage unique

While visiting the Shire you are able to take some wildlife photo right out your front door due to the Michaels 2 acre pond which attracts bald eagles, herons and osprey who come in to dine on the many cutthroat trout. You are also able to sit along the River Shire and listen to the babbling brook, visit with Bilbo at his home or visit the many occupants of the Shire to share this magical experience like nothing else in the world.

The attention to detail is amazing and we appreciated all of the small touches that made our stay especially welcoming. Our hosts were so kind and sharing with their time and their knowledge of the area. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

Owner's Response: John & Kelly, I'm so glad that there are those out there who appreciate fine detail. The trolls are slobs but the rest of the Shire is very neat. We hope to see you both again in the near future!

Our stay at the hobbit house was wonderful. It is very well done, every detail adds to the enjoyment of the visit. Very private, relaxing and cozy. The bed is so comfortable, and the house is in pristine order. The grounds are enchanted and the host is intent on making your stay special. I highly recommend this as a must stay. Bring your own food, the kitchen is fun to cook in. The drive is worth it, the scenery is breathtaking.

When we saw the Hobbit House online we knew we would make every effort to stay there! We were not disappointed. The beautiful setting in the mountains is breathtaking and the creation of the Hobbit House and surrounding Shire is outstanding! Every detail from the artistic creations to the comforts of the home were over the top! What a wonderful place to unwind and renew oneself. Thank you Steve & Chris for an unforgettable trip!

Owner's Response: Pam, Thank you for your kind words. We are always trying to improve the Shire... this year with Elven Village, 3 new Elf Houses and a couple more Hobbit Houses. People have stated how quite and spiritual the entire enchanted village seems to be. We again thank you for your stay and remember... This could be "Hobbit Forming"!

Charming 5 star Retreat!

  • 5 of 5

This is a charming, secluded 5 star retreat:) A whimsical place set in the most stunning of nature settings. It brought me back to childhood and all the imagination that goes with that time and place. The attention to detail is so appreciated and the love that this property was made with is present everywhere you look. The Evenings are magical with the shire all lit up! We were so comfortable and will be back again and again.....
