Welcome to 'Villa Marbella' Located in the gated community of Palm Beach Estates. Constructed in 2009 the villa is a modern, fully furnished 4 bedroom, 4 1/2 bathroom home. Villa Marbella is nestled between the beach and a mangrove estuary where wildlife is abundant and protected . It's not unusual to see and hear Howler monkeys, parrots and other tropical birds on the property or in the surrounding areas.

Palm Beach estates is a quiet neighborhood consisting of both permanent year round residents and homes that are rented by their owners. Villa Marbella has permanent residents on either side of the house. The pool is totally private and is a great place to relax and enjoy nature.

The 3 bedroom main house has an optional, attached, "in-law" unit with a separate entrance, making the house a 4 bedroom. Each bedroom has ceiling fans and individually controlled air conditioners. The downstairs bedroom has a queen bed and a bathroom with double vessel sinks. The upstairs back bedroom also has a queen bed and features a huge trapezoid window facing the jungle and estuary beyond. The 'Master' upstairs bedroom has a king bed, 2 ceiling fans, two vessel sinks in the bathroom and french doors opening up to a Juliette balcony. Located at the top of the stairs is a small open office area with a futon where one adult or 2 children can sleep and is also equipped with air conditioning.

The in-law unit has a double bed, kitchen, and ensuite bathroom. If you have children the entrance can be controlled. We do not rent the in-law unit separately, so regardless of your needs, the privacy of this property is yours. Just let us know if you are interested in including this unit to your rental for an additional fee. This unit expands the whole house to accommodate up to 8 persons comfortably.

The open gourmet kitchen comes fully stocked and has granite counters with all stainless steel appliances including a dishwasher and microwave. The living room has a large flatscreen TV equipped with cable and a DVD player. If you enjoy music the casa has a network stereo receiver. You can stream your favorite music via Spotify, internet radio, or music stored on your PC both in the main house or pool deck area. You can relax in the serenity of the outside covered patio overlooking the free flowing pool and lush gardens, or you can soak up the sun on the extended exposed decking wrapping the poolside.

For security, the main house and the apartment both have a safe which can accommodate a laptop, phones, passports etc. The house has an extra large lock up room if you wish to secure any additional valuables. Also provided with the house is an ADT alarm system for the entire house and in-law suite. Palm Beach Estates is a gated community, so in the evenings a guard controls the entrance and exit of vehicles into the community.

Playa Grande is a part of Las Baulas National Park where the world’s largest leatherback turtles nest every year. If you are an early riser and on a morning beach walk you might catch baby turtles freshly hatched making their way to the ocean. The area is also known for world class surfing, fishing, horseback riding, zip lining, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, golfing, sunset sails and more. Playa Grande is a very laid back 3.5 miles white sandy beach, where you can take long walks or just relax with a cold drink while watching one of our spectacular sunsets. On many occasions you might be the only person on the beach!

Villa Marbella is a 2 minute walk to 3 restaurants and a small convenient store and if you want to venture a little further you can take a 5 minute drive into the north of Playa Grande and you will find several more restaurants, pizzeria's, bars, 2 surf shops, and yoga studio. If other services are needed Tamarindo is only 25 minutes by car or during the day you can walk down the beach and catch a water taxi across the estuary. Tamarindo is a little tourist town that has all the amenities such as supermarkets, banks, church's, car rental, restaurants, bars, discos and more!

Pura Vida Again!

This was our 3rd year staying in Casa Marbella. This year with the new owners we experienced the same level of satisfaction. Beautiful addition of a large raw edge outdoor table where we spent many hot afternoons & nights reading and playing cards. House and pool are well maintained. This is a lovely community --several great restaurants and local bread and fish deliveries. Becky is very accommodating. She has compiled a substantial handbook with instructions, entertainment suggestions, taxi referrals etc. It was nice to be able to rent the apartment for additional couple as well. Favorite Pizza: El Huerto, Tacos--open air on the beach Taco Star--banana bread too; RipJack Inn; never disappointed; Seven-BBQ; Great Waltinis/Bula Bula—ahi tuna and Specials are great & fishbowl drinks; there is also a little café beside the Surf Camp which has awesome food and smoothies just off the beach—just be prepared to wait a bit! Miss our local friends and dog, and turtles! See you next year! Pura vida!

Amazing location 10 minutes from the ocean!

This villa has it all. Nature; pool in the backyard; virtually minutes from a deserted beach with amazing sunsets and waves. Our family of 6 adults and 3 children absolutely loved our stay here. It was very peaceful, but only a 20 minute car ride, or boat trip, to town.

Not much else to say that hasn't already been written by previous reviews. Becky is very accommodating and replied within an hour of our emails. She even had the local property manager purchase a high chair for our grandson as this was quite possibly the only thing lacking for our family.

Highly recommended.

A comfortable, relaxing and gorgeous stay in a spectacular location.

We had a fantastic stay at Casa Marbella, an elegantly laid out and comfortable home tucked against an estuary and an easy walk to Playa Grande, which is quite simply an absolutely spectacular beach, wonderful for swimming and surfing and spectacular sunsets with no viewable on-beach development (it's part of a national park). The house is in an ex-pat community but not too isolated or exclusive (and the beach and many of the surrounding beaches are a nice mix of local and foreigner). A few restaurants and a convenience store are within walking distance, and some great grocery stores are about a 25 minute drive away. A rental car is recommended for any exploring and errands you might want to do. We were not fans of adjacent Playa Tamarindo, which is a short water taxi across the estuary [a thirty second taxi versus a half hour drive] but felt like a very different world and was more touristy, hustly and developed. But if you're looking for a party, that's where it is. But despite it's proximity, Playa Grande is a completely different universe.

The Hotel Bula Bula handles your check in and offers food and drinks (our gallo pinto breakfasts were our favorite) as well as can help you book any tours or adventures you'd like to embark on and staff was very helpful. Surf lessons are also available nearby at the Playa Grande Surf Shop, and they also helped us rent bicycles for one day (was fun to ride the bikes on the beach at low tide). The kitchen was well appointed and we were easily able to prepare a few meals at home. Bedrooms were very comfortable and spacious. The pool was very refreshing (usually getting a mix of shade and sun). And we liked our neighborly bats! In a nutshell, Casa Marbella was a great place to unplug, relax, explore, and enjoy a magical part of the magical Costa Rica.

Quiet, private & accessible to restaurants

Our stay in Casa Marbella over this past Holiday was truly the best we have had in Playa Grande in Palm Beach Estates!

The home is spacious and well appointed.

It is a short walk (along which there are monkeys, birds and butterflies to be seen & heard) to a pristine & uncrowded beach for swimming and surfing in warm water. Also many mornings were sightings of turtle tracks leading to nesting mounds..

Breakfast on the covered veranda facing the estuary was often included a great blue heron poolside.

The property management was attentive & courteous especially the daily maid service.

We are planning to return!

Perfect stay and wonderful property

Was the listing description accurate regarding the location, layout, amenities, etc?

- Yes. Location is in a subdivision called Palm Beach Estates. There is about 1 mile of dirt road leading to the subdivision which is really bumpy. The subdivision is very secluded and safe. A couple of local restaurants, mini market, and houses/BnB's for convenience. No ATM's anywhere, so bring money.

Was the property clean and well-maintained?

- Yes - daily maid service and pool/gardener provided daily. Property is new, spacious enough for 2 families of 4. The layout is set up so that the bedrooms are far apart and have a lot of privacy. Although we shared a house, it felt like you have seclusion/privacy in the bedrooms. Very tastefully designed and spacious!! The pool and large outdoor dining table made of reclaimed wood made for wonderful gathering spots. Very well maintained. Spacious house and property. Pool was refreshing and fantastic outdoor dining /lounging area. Backyard has a gate that leads to an estuary. 5-10 min walk to the beach playa grande - one of the best surf spots all to yourself.

Did the owner or manager provide good customer service?

Yes - Becky was responsive and reasonable. Property management is handled by Hotel Bula Bula which is about 2 houses down the street. Easy to walk over if you need anything - water taxi, setting up tours, ride to the airport, any issues with the house, etc.

What activities, attractions and restaurants did you enjoy?

Visit to Playa Conchal - pristine white beach about 20 minutes away by car. great beach for kids. not surfing. rented jetskis, snorkeling.

Estuary boat tour -$ 25/person. 2 hour tour of the estuary which is right behind the property. very nice esp for kids.

Surf - Playa grande which is about a 5-10 min walk from the property is a secluded beach that is prime surf spot. Board rental for 24 hours + a lesson was $40 at playa surf camp right near the entrance. Highly recommended.

Restaurant - Hotel Bula Bula was not bad but a bit over priced. There are not many options to dine out in the immediate area, so we ate their one night and grilled in or hit up tamarindo for the other nights.

Water taxi to Tamarindo - about $3-5 per person. Last boat back is around 5-6pm so keep that in mind. You can also catch a taxi ride back if you want to stay in tamarindo at night.

Very comfortable and spacious home - water is an issue

Very spacious and accommodating property for a family. All of the bedrooms are spacious and comfortable. Nice pool, kitchen and living room.

Main issue we had was water. We ran out of water on three different occasions. There is not municipal or city water. There is a water tank on the property and it is filled by truck deliver. We were a party of 10 and the water did not last more than a day.

Also beware of the road leading to the property. The road is a dirt road that is full of pot holes. This makes driving in and out quite painful.

Also you will need to bring your own paper products or purchase at one of the local grocery stores in Tamarindo. The property management company did not supply and dish washing detergent, paper towel or toilet paper. You would think based on the weekly rental costs these items would be provided.

Owner's Response: Guanacaste Costa Rica and many other areas of Central America have been experiencing a drought (El Nino) since 2014. Up to the week of July 4th we have been very successful in managing the water shortage by monitoring H20 levels of the two tanks that support Casa Marbella and shipping water in when necessary. Unfortunately the area of Playa Grande, not just Casa Marbella, was unable to meet the H20 demands for this high occupancy vacation week. As a result, I will be providing a 10% refund on the weekly rental in an effort to address this issue. Going forward, I will be limiting the total number of occupants to 8 persons versus the previous 10 during the current drought in an effort to reduce the demands on the house. Also Palm Beach Estates is developing a contingency plan in order to address any potential problems in the future i.e. increasing the number of available delivery trucks in time of emergency. Good news is the rainy season starts September. With regards to the shortage of paper products, we do not supply paper towels but items of this nature can be purchased at the local general market (WilMart) which is a short walk from the house. But it is our responsibility to supply TP. Not sure what happened, we typically stock the bathrooms with extra TP under the cabinets. I have contacted the property manager and house maid to address this issue and make sure the house is adequately stocked. I apologize for this inconvenience.
