Keywords: Private, large property. Long meadow views
We bought this home to use as a family weekend retreat, and as a base for all the wonderful activities in the area. As active as we are, we also love to cook, pack picnics to take on hikes while we spend time together as a family playing cards, backgammon and scrabble. There is a large TV in the house, and two movie theaters nearby, so always plenty of rainy day activities!
We fell in love with the property as soon as we first saw it. The views from the house are incredible. The meadow, the woods and the barns offer endless adventures for children. The hiking trails, accessed from the property are amazing. In the summers we also go kayaking on The Shepaug, canoeing on Lake Waramaug and bike riding on the back roads. In the winters we love to snow shoe and cross country ski on the nearby trails, we ski at either Butternut or Mohawk (20 minutes away), we skate at the local rink.
Washington has many charming antique stores, wonderful restaurants and a great library with many activities. Lots of farms nearby to go apple or berry picking.
We'd stayed at High Meadow Farm in the summer before and had been trying to find the right time to come back to see it in the winter. It didn't disappoint. Still very comfortable, with the many outdoor options we like so much about the property and area. And you can't beat the view... now even better with new floor to ceiling windows in the common rooms. Highly recommended.
We just completed a wonderful (but too short) trip to High Meadow Farm. Our family (two kids, ages 6 and 3) were in need of a nature getaway and found everything we were looking for, just over an hour's drive away! What a stellar property - the views are simply spectacular. The property itself is stunning, with the house sitting over a huge meadow and enjoying views of the surrounding hills for miles from the expansive deck. The house is great with a full kitchen, comfortable bedrooms, clean and recently renovated bathrooms, and plenty of space to read, relax, play games, watch TV, or unwind. The best part for our kids was the adjacent barn (one of two on the property) that has been converted into an indoor sports court with more than enough sports equipment to keep us busy: basketball, hockey, lacrosse, soccer, volleyball, tennis, bikes, scooters, bowling, etc etc - my son was truly in heaven, and it was a great option to have - although the weather was great when we were there, the sport court would be a godsend on rainy days. The in-ground pool is next to the sport court, and although we stayed too early in the season to enjoy the pool, we'll be returning so we can take advantage of the swimming as well. The best part for my wife and me was being surround by nature and...silence. Unless you counted the occasional call of the red-tailed hawk that soars over the property, or the crackle of the hardwood fire in the fireplace, our voices were the only noises we heard, and it was beautiful. And don't get me started on the stars...wow. Truly a world away from it all. We loved it so much that we only left the property twice, but Steep Rock Preserve is only two minutes down the hill and offered great trail hiking along the Shepaug River. Another two minutes down the road is Washington Depot, a charming town with great options for dining. Richard, the owner, was friendly, responsive and answered all of our questions quickly. Our kids are already asking us when we can come back, and indeed, we will be coming back.
Our family stayed at High Meadow in May 2014 for a friend's wedding in Washington Depot. The location is excellent as the house is just 2 miles from stores, restaurants and a classic old town pub (GW Tavern). Richard gave me a nice summary of the town and list of great restaurants to visit. He also provided detailed explanations of the workings of the house and was very responsive, honest and accessible.
The house has great WifFi coverage in the bedrooms and an ATT micro cell for cell service. Unfortunately there is little to no cell coverage in the town of Washington so don't rely on your phone for directions. Print out your directions in advance or take screen shots of your phone before you leave the house.
The outdoor areas are fantastic. It rained so we didn't use the pool much but it is large and very nice. The barn and playroom were great and the kids loved all of the games and sports available (basketball, lacrosse, soccer, golf, hockey, heavy bag, bowling).
Bathrooms have been recently remodeled and are very nice. There are 4 bedrooms upstairs and 2 bedrooms downstairs. I should note that the downstairs bedrooms are cold and not as nice but we didn't need to use them.
There is a BBQ on a nice sunny deck that overlooks a huge meadow. About half of the meadow was mowed and the kids loved looking for fireflies and exploring the grounds.
I highly recommend this house, especially for families, and if I return to Washington I'd love to rent it again.
My family stayed at this lovely home tucked away in a quiet area of Washington Depot for the month of July. The home is well appointed and over looks lovely hills and trees in the distance. The owner was very accommodating when there were questions. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and hope to return again in the future.
My family stayed in this house for a weekend in early September - what a wonderful home!!! The views of the open lawn and fields are stunning, the gunite pool is spectacular, the house was absolutely comfortable and very roomy and well appointed - everything we needed was right there! It is a short drive to Washington Depot which is such a cute little town. We really loved staying at this house and hope to spend another weekend there another time. Thank you!
After searching for a rental, with amenities, this was the one we chose, and it worked out great. The property boarders a land trust, and has great nature all around. Yet, high end coffee shops and excellent dining within a 15 minutes drive.
