About Bruce Batten
Vista Country Home is located on Fiddler's Green, a working farm in the gorgeous rolling hills of Maryland countryside that has been in our family for 5 generations. Owner/managers are siblings Bruce, Chris and Mary Batten, who grew up playing in these creeks and fields, riding horses, milking cows, bailing hay, etc. Bruce's wife, Toni, and Chris' wife, Melissa are essential parts of our family team. Here, where Big Pipe Creek joins Bear Branch on our property, we would wander the banks where Civil War soldiers camped the day before the battle that shaped the history of our nation. It was here we gained our appreciation of history, and the sacrifices made by our ancestors for the blessings that we enjoy today. Chris and wife Melissa are the on-site managers who lives in the ante-bellum farmhouse nearby. Bruce and Mary divide their time between Vista and Fiddlers Green, and their other residences in Alaska.
Bruce Batten purchased this Chateau / Country House in 1946
Why Bruce Batten chose Taneytown
Our family built Vista Country Home, designed by the award-winning, Registered Landscape Architect Chris Batten, on our family farm known as Fiddler's Green in 1990. It was originally built for and home to US Navy Capt. (ret.) Hugh N. Batten, a WWII fighter ace, and his wife Mary Thomas 'Tommy' Batten. Both are now deceased. This location has been a family farm for some 200 years, and looks much the same as it did 150 years ago during the Civil War, when Confederate forces invaded Maryland numerous times. Scores of battles large and small raged within short distances from this farm. Tens of thousands of soldiers marched through these fields, or camped along Pipe Creek, which runs through this property, on their way to destiny at Gettysburg. Its proximity to Gettysburg, Antietam, and other National Parks and battle grounds makes it an ideal home base for day trips to some of the world's finest battlefield visitors centers, as well as all the visitor attractions of both Baltimore and Washington D.C. But in addition to its location in a America's historic heartland, Vista is situated among some of America's most charming countryside, small towns, and neighbor farms. We wanted to share this magical place with people who love history and this country's agarian roots.

Family Reunion and Gettysburg visit
My father who turns 87 has always wanted to visit Gettysburg. We planned a Gettysburg trip AND a family reunion, and Vista was the PERFECT place for both! An easy drive through scenic farm country, Vista is the perfect location. In the evenings it served as a warm, spacious family time retreat. It’s serene seclusion and beautifully appointed rooms offered the perfect setting for cook outs, conversation, walkabouts, and relaxation. Melissa and her lovely family were attentive and welcoming. Family friendly...dog friendly...elder friendly—-the Vista has it all! We’d love to come back!
This place has it all -- one of our favorites!
What a lovely and truly perfectly appointed country getaway. This property had *everything* we were looking for -- a beautifully expansive and peaceful setting, friendly and helpful hosts, sparkling clean accommodations, a gorgeous living room with surrounding views, a well-stocked kitchen, and the perfect layout and step-free access for our elderly yellow labrador and 83 yr old mother who uses a transport wheelchair. Both were able to move easily between the home and its beautiful outdoor patio. As an added treat, we were there during fledgling season and had incredible views right into the many birdhouses and bird feeders surrounding the property. There wasn't a day we weren't out grilling and enjoying the birdsong, privacy, and surrounding views. We've stayed at many vacation rental properties over the years and this has become one of our favorites. Our host family was incredibly responsive and so very helpful to all our needs -- even offering up any necessary medical equipment for our mother, which we didn't need but sure appreciated the offer. They certainly go the extra mile for their guests. Thanks so much and we hope to visit you at Vista again soon!
Vista Home is truly spectacular
Traveling to Gettysburg and staying at Vista has become an annual tradition for our family. The home is wonderful - it's accessible for my Dad who has mobility issues and well laid out for lots of space for all. The walking trails provide a tranquil experience for people and lots of interesting sights and sounds for our greyhounds. Easy access to Gettsyburg means daily trips to the Battlefield, area restaurants, and our greyhound activities. We're thrilled the owners share such a special place with us every year!
Vista, Taneytown, Md
I retired and moved from California to Maryland in December 2018. While waiting for my home to be finished, my friend found the Vista property for me to rent. What a find. The owners, the house and the surrounding property are just so welcoming and comfortable. This has been a fantastic place to start my new journey. My dog has gotten so spoiled by having a huge safe outdoor life where he can run around and explore and he made friends with the other farm dogs - he even met the goats! I highly recommend this place.
Our second visit to the Vista House! It was another great time. The Batten's are perfect hosts, and this house couldn't be any nicer. A great place to stay for roaming the historic sites all around the area.
Stunning surroundings and the house has all the comforts of home. Wonderful place to relax .
I would really recommend this property. My family has a wonderful time. So many beautiful walks on the property. The scenery is stunning and the house is everything we had hoped for. The hosts Chris and Melissa treated us like family and we will definitely be back to enjoy this place again.
