A mere 15-minute drive will take you to Gettysburg--to where Chamberlain stood moments before he led a bayonet charge down the slopes of Little Round Top; to Cemetery Ridge, where the rebel yell still echoes from Pickett's Confederates as they charged to the 'high water mark' of the war; to the Gettysburg Cemetery, where Lincoln delivered the most famous speech in history honoring those who gave 'the last full measure.'

Vista offers easy access to many of America's other most important historical sites, as well, including Antietam and Monocacy Battlefields, as well as cultural and recreational sites in and around Washington DC and Baltimore.

After a day of sightseeing, golf, or ANTIQUES SHOPPING in the MANY OF THE EXCELLENT ANTIQUE SHOPS in Carroll County, you can kick back at Vista. Sip a cool iced tea or glass of wine from under Vista's gazebo as steaks sizzle on the grill, and a red setting sun yields the dimming cornfields and sycamore trees to a constellation of sparkling fireflies.

Or, enjoy the Maryland traditional celebratory feast: a pot of blue crabs from Vince's Seafood, steaming in savory Old Bay seasoning, with cold bottle of delicious locally crafted beer, or a chilled glass of fresh apple cider from nearby Baugher's Orchard.

Prefer to dine out? Vista is only 3 miles from Taneytown, where you can find WORLD-CLASS DINING at the Smokehouse Restaurant, the fabulous restaurant of the delux country hotel, ANTRIM 1844 an elegant ante-bellum mansion. At the other end of the cost spectrum, McDonald's, Pizza Hut and other familiar eateries are CLOSE and offer faster food alternatives.

The larger, but still nearby towns of Gettysburg and Westminster boast wonderful small-town character in pubs, diners, and family restaurants to please any palate and any budget.

For a quiet evening at your Country Home, enjoy a movie or documentary from a large collection of Civil War DVDs and other movie options on a large HD TV.

For a quieter evening, curl up with one of the many books in the Vista library of Civil War and American fiction and history books and periodicals.

Vista also offers you FREE WiFi for HIGH-SPEED INTERNET access with UNLIMITED data. Use it to look up your Civil War ancestors, check your email, or tell your Facebook friends what a great time you are having!

About Bruce Batten

Vista Country Home is located on Fiddler's Green, a working farm that has been in our family for 5 generations. Owner/managers are siblings Bruce, Chris and Mary Batten, who grew up playing in these creeks and fields, riding horses, milking cows, bailing hay, etc. Bruce's wife, Toni, and Chris' wife, Melissa are essential parts of our family team.

Here, where Big Pipe Creek joins Bear Branch on our property, we would wander the banks where Civil War soldiers camped the day before the battle that shaped the history of our nation. It was here we gained our appreciation of history, and the sacrifices made by our ancestors for the blessings that we enjoy today.

Chris and wife Melissa are the on-site managers who lives in the ante-bellum farmhouse nearby. Bruce and Mary divide their time between Vista and Fiddlers Green, and their other residences in Alaska.

Bruce Batten purchased this chateau / country house in 1946

Why Bruce Batten chose Taneytown

Our family built Vista Country Home, designed by the award-winning, Registered Landscape Architect Chris Batten, on our family farm known as Fiddler's Green in 1990. It was originally built for and home to US Navy Capt. (ret.) Hugh N. Batten, a WWII fighter ace, and his wife 'Tommy' Batten. Both are now deceased.

This location has been a family farm for some 200 years, and looks much the same as it did 150 years ago during the Civil War, when Confederate forces invaded Maryland numerous times. Scores of battles large and small raged within short distances from this farm. Tens of thousands of soldiers marched through these fields, or camped along Pipe Creek, which runs through this property, on their way to destiny at Gettysburg. Its proximity to Gettysburg, Antietam, and other National Parks and battle grounds makes it an ideal home base for day trips to some of the world's finest battlefield visitors centers, as well as all the visitor attractions of both Baltimore and Washington D.C.

But in addition to its location in a America's historic heartland, Vista is situated among some of America's most charming countryside, small towns, and neighbor farms. We wanted to share this magical place with people who love history and this country's agarian roots.

Lovely House in a Lovely Setting

  • 5 of 5

This is a fabulous place. It is the best appointed and best organized rental I have ever stayed in. It is spacious and comfortable. It has a lovely deck with chairs and a small table off one side and a covered patio with grill off the other, both overlooking fields and trees. The setting is lovely, amidst the rolling hills of western Maryland, almost a mile off the main road. It's also a great place to bird watch; one of our party saw 46 species in 48 hours.

Our hosts, Melissa and Chris, were delightful. We had a college graduation party at the house and they loaned us all kinds of things for it (coolers, tablecloths, chairs). Their farm is adjacent (but out of sight) and we enjoyed visiting the goats and baby kittens in their barn. Chris is a landscape architect so the landscaping around the house was lovely. I would love the excuse to stay there again any day!

Fabulous House and Gracious Hospitality

  • 5 of 5

This was our third trip to Vista House and we loved it more than ever! Even though the house is already accommodating for mobility issues, Chris and Melissa were gracious beyond words in making the space "just so" for Dad's mobility issues. He had a fabulous time and no difficulties with access into or throughout the house.

The dogs enjoyed the walking trails (as always) and we had a wonderful week visiting with friends and touring the Battlefield. We hope to back again soon!

Nice New Years getaway

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a nice quiet getaway over New Years weekend, and this place did not disappoint. There were 4 of us (two couples) including our dogs, which was more than enough room. The walking trails around the property were great especially with the dogs, and the proximity to Liberty Mountain provided a great day of skiing. There stores, shops and restaurants all close by which was convenient. The heating did go out one night, however the owners came by immediately after we called them with space heaters, and even gave us money for our inconvenience. And a short while later, a contractor came and fixed the heating, so the quick accommodations were greatly appreciated. Great place with warm and friendly owners!

Beautiful, serene escape near Gettysburg

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, our two kids and their three cousins spent two wonderful nights at Vista. The setting is nothing short of idyllic and the house itself is simply lovely. We had everything we could possibly need and more. From the time of first booking through to the end of our stay, the Battens were quick to respond to e-mails, answer questions and were extremely personable and welcoming! We came during the winter and made a visit to Gettysburg and went snow tubing nearby. I would love to return in the spring or summer. It truly is a unique and beautiful property In close proximity to Gettysburg. Thank you Bruce and Chris!

Perfect Country Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a wonderful Thanksgiving stay at the Vista house. It is situated on a large family farm and feels quite secluded, even though you are 5 minutes from a grocery store, gas station, restaurants and convenience stores. The owners were extremely friendly and accommodating and helped make the stay special for our family. As noted by a prior guest, the kitchen was stocked and organized. The tv reception was not the best, but it was not an issue for us. There is plenty of outdoor space and the owners showed us the various trails that you could walk/run. The farm also had a "tent city" next to the river where the kids could play in a place house and the family could have an outdoor fire. It is a wonderful property with great owners. We hope to return in the near future and would highly recommend.
