An enthusiastic New York and Harlem resident, always ready to give the inside scoop and recommendations on Harlem or NYC. Very involved in the neighborhood. A product, landscape and interior designer with numerous awards and items in national museums. In fact, the building has also been published in several magazines and appeared in films. A world traveller, as I flew for Pan Am for over 7 years. Partner at the popular Harlem Shake, a restaurant I designed.
Dennis Decker purchased this apartment in 2000
This building is typical of the historic neighborhood. I was impressed that it still retained so much of its original form and material. However, I was very impressed by the atmosphere of the block, with friendly, open and involved neighbors.
The quiet friendly tree-lined street, proximity to express subway- only 4 stops to Times Square, closeness to neighborhood coffee shop and historic park, as well as the 125 St. corridor and Central Park.
I actually love sitting on the front stoop while having a coffee or a glass of wine. I love seeing the relaxed street life going by, and being a part of it. Since my block is dominated by private brownstones, rather than apartment buildings, it has a friendlier, small town feeling than most other neighborhoods.
Harlem Hideaway was a fantastic choice for our home away from home. Dennis is amazing and was helpful throughout the entire process. We are sad to be leaving and cannot wait to return.
We had a great time @ the Red Rooster our first night and the breakfast wraps @ Cafe Latte are a must!
Great location close to subway and Central Park. Apartment was nice and Dennis was very friendly and helpful!
This was a perfect retreat for my husband and I to stay in Manhattan. Everything we needed was supplied. The beautiful old brownstone reflected the charm of yesteryear with a stylish, new full-sized kitchen. It was very well stocked with all the amenities you could ask for. It also had the convenience of a washer & dryer which we used three times during our stay. Being a cold and wet March, we were happy to snuggle into the wonderfully comfortably firm queen sized bed. The bedding was luxiourius and felt like it was from a 5 star hotel. The Parlour Apartment is more than adequately heated by two radiators. Dennis is a wonderful host whom we had to contact several times prior to our visit regarding travel issues with a blizzard that closed all the NYC airports for over two days. Dennis allowed us to reschedule our visit for the following month. What a relief! Dennis greeted us upon arrival and answered our endless questions with patience. Upon his suggestion, we went to Amateur Night at the Apollo Theatre on Wednesday evening. What an enjoyable and entertaining time we had. We finished the night by eating great old fashioned style cheeseburgers and fries at Harlem Shake. Dennis gave us input on using the NY subway system. Being from a rural Northern CA farm town, it took us a while to master the subterranean train system. We visited for 8 days and each bought the week long subway pass, which I would highly suggest. The Harlem Hideaway is only about 3 blocks to the subway. We found the neighborhood to be friendly & easy to navigate. There were several markets and restaurants within a 10-20 min walking distance. The huge flat screen TV had great cable and the free internet was quick and efficient. The only thing I would change was the chilly weather which was in the 30-40's each day with a few days of rain. We traveled all over Manhattan and still didn't see all the sights. So Dennis, we hope to see you and the Harlem Hideaway soon again, but in warmer weather! Thank you very much, Mary & Mark Olsen
Loved, loved, loved this place. Beautiful, historic brownstone. Fully equipped, very clean, very comfortable. Great neighbourhood. Only 3 short blocks to the subway, where you can get just about anywhere. Excellent grocery store right by subway stop. 9 short blocks to Central Park. Dennis has thought of everything you could possibly need to make your stay comfortable. I will definitely want to stay here on my next trip to NY.
It's a great place to stay in NYC.
I confirm what is written in others reviews.
- Apartment with everything you need plus a lot of details to make you feel like being in a NYC movie.
- Dennis hospitality
- Accesibility, in 20 minutes you are in Broadway and 34th Street.
- Quiet and safe neighborhood.
beautiful host, location, and just the most wonderful neighbourhood in NYC !!!
I don't think I can say anything more that hasn't already been said. This place is wonderful. All of Dennis' amenities are excellent. The bed is superb, as are the pillows and bedding. Very quiet neighborhood - the only sounds we heard were those going on in other parts of the house. Everything you need is nearby. The only problem we ran into - and this was our issue, nothing to do with the rental - is that a lot of the activities we were taking part in were located on the eastside of Manhattan. The 4,5 and 6 trains are quite a hike away. So, since it was very cold during our stay, we ended up taking more cabs than we usually would.
I would recommend staying here, hands down, if you can find an open date!
