About Nora Hubbert

While Sile and I call Brooklyn our primary residence, Sile was born and raised in County Wicklow, Ireland. Numerous trips 'home' demanded we find a 'derelict cottage' for ourselves near the family. The 'Tiger' arrived and prices skyrocketed around Dublin and into Co. Wicklow . Dejected, we went to visit friends in West Cork for a weekend.

Nora Hubbert purchased this house in 2001

Why Nora Hubbert chose Derry

A Saturday morning drive brought us to the site on which Derry Hill sits today. Needless to say we impulsively purchased the land the day after we saw it in 1998. By 2001 the house, designed by my brother who is a builder here in the states, was constructed but unfinished. In the summer of 2001 my two brothers and brother-in-law, and his brother arrived with partners and family to partake in an Amish-like-construction, communal, work/vacation holiday. It was hugely successful as wide pitch pine boards were laid, doors hung, trim ('architrive') nailed, garage deck constructed, and a kitchen installed.

What makes this house unique

The kitchen cabinets were designed and constructed by my brother in Connecticut and imported in a container to the site. We think the kitchen is the finest feature of the house while the wood flooring, with its wide, pitch-pine boards from Honduras, is a close second. The plan is open which allows plentiful light to fill the house. We hope you appreciate the finishing details which reflect the craftsmanship my brothers and extended crew brought to the job.

We had a fantastic stay at Derry Hill!! Stunning house and get indoor/outdoor flow with lovely sunning area out the back for evening meals in summer! Nora was a fantastic hostess, and the freshly made scones on arrival were a lovely surprise.

Thanks Nora - we will be back!

Property is better than described

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a wonderful time using Derry Hill house as our base. Nora was wonderful, and the only complaint is that the amenities made it difficult to leave for the day!

The kids loved the large yard and basketball hoop, as well as the selection of board games.

Location was perfect to access all that West Cork has to offer!

Spring break

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time in this very spacious house.

Upon arrival, Nora had tea and scones all set up for us in the sunny dining area, complete with a bouquet of daffodils. Nora was so helpful and kind. We had several questions, and she helped us immediately, and gave us wonderful advice.

We hope to return to this very house.we could easily fit 4 more people.

We had a fabulous stay at Derry Hill. Nora was very helpful and accommodating with our changing arrival time. The house was really nice, and the area was outstanding. Would love to return and see more of beautiful Ireland.

Large, comfortable house in a great location

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic stay in this lovely home very near to a great beach and surrounded by fantastic scenery. The house is very large and well stocked. There were 6 of us and more than enough room. The garden is great for playing football in the evening! You're a very short drive (or indeed a walk if you don't mind jumping into hedgerows when cars pass) to Rosscarbery and Glandore. The kitchen and dining area accommodate plenty of people and have everything you need for cooking and serving a large group. There is a room downstairs that could be used as a playroom. The sitting room had comfortable chairs and couches that were perfect for relaxing in the evening.

Nora was extremely helpful and accommodating. She even provided homemade scones and a perfect cup of tea when we arrived. Everything in the house worked perfectly.

Overall we had a fantastic stay and will definitely be back. We've been to West Cork every summer for about 6 years and this is one of our favourite houses that we have stayed in.

Corker !

  • 5 of 5

Stopped here with my large family for Son's wedding, property is all you would want - clean, spacious, great views, huge garden with goalposts for family football.

Fantastic beaches and countryside all around, and of course plenty of hostelries and eateries 5 mins down road in Rosscarbery.

Would recommend to people who enjoy seclusion but not isolation, with all amenities available in the village

Nearby Glandore Harbor is a most scenic harbor where sailing boats large and small set anchor. Glandore Inn, tucked into a hill with the rest of the village, offers outdoor tables and chairs from which you look down at the harbor while sipping a most glorious pint of Guinness, a must while the afternoon drifts into evening. Drombeg circle, an incredible remain from the Bronze Age, is a national monument and literally a two minute drive from the house on the way to Glandore. Kinsale is 40 minutes to the west and Killarney 2 hours to the northeast ( A bird could do it in 30 minutes but winding roads is the price you pay for dramatic landscapes on breathtaking peninsulas like Beara and Dingle). Skibereen Golf course, a twenty minute drive, offers 18 wonderful holes. The local pitch and putt course on the Warren (our 5 star blue beach) in Rosscarbery is a par 3 course which affords an incredible view of the sea while you fine tune your short game. Clonakilty, a twenty minute drive on the N71 heading east, offers a sensational live music venue at DeBara's Pub. Hill walking, sailing, golf, fishing, horseback riding, are all very accessible and loads of fun. Excellent restaurants that use the finest local produce abound. You can not buy fresher fish anywhere that the local fish shop in Union Hall. The single lane, hair-raising bridge you cross to get into Union Hall was featured in the classic Irish film, War of the Buttons. Roury Glen, over which the house sits, is your quintessential Irish landscape.
