About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms, Sofabed, 2 Baths (Sleeps 4 - 6)

Skyline Crest is a private mountain-top retreat high in the Blue Ridge Mountains west of Charlottesville, Virginia.

Part of a 1,400-acre gated compound bordering the Shenandoah National Park, the property offers supreme privacy in one of the most spectacular natural settings in the Eastern Mountains. Deer, bear and turkey wander through the forests and open fields. Hawks soar overhead. An elevation of 3,200 feet ensures cool temperatures and constant breezes throughout the summer.

The views from the striking contemporary house are breathtaking - a 120-mile panorama from the level Piedmont in the east, over the near Blue Ridge and the Shenandoah Valley to the distant Alleghenies, fading far into West Virginia. (See the video link on this page, or go to: Five decks, including a spacious rooftop deck, open onto the various daytime vistas - and at night provide for thrilling star-gazing under some of the darkest skies in the Mid-Atlantic.

The house itself (2 bedrooms, 2 full baths) features every modern convenience, including a state-of-the art kitchen, satellite TV and wireless internet.

Although it feels like a world apart, Skyline Crest is only 40 minutes from Charlottesville and Jefferson's University of Virginia, giving you easy access to all the cultural amenities that a cosmopolitan University community can offer. There are many distinguished vineyards in the vicinity, and wines from the Monticello American Viticultural Area (named for Jefferson's home) are considered among the best produced anywhere in the Eastern United States. Also nearby is Wintergreen, the renowned four-season resort, featuring two award-winning golf courses and some of the best skiing and snowboarding south of New England.

Some final notes:

1. Skyline Crest is located at the summit of Buck's Elbow Mountain, just above the town of Crozet. We like guests to know that the drive ends with a 5 mile ascent up a gravel road. It's a very good road, well maintained and, except in snow or ice, fine for 2-wheel drive. (See the picture in our Photos section.) It is, however, curvy and steep in places. In the winter months, because weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, we do recommend 4-wheel drive.

2. At the very top of the Mountain, about 150 yards behind our house, there is a small complex of FAA radio towers. These don't interfere in any way with our views, a 270-degree panorama facing entirely in the other direction. But you do see them as you drive up, and from the parking area at the rear of our property. There are 6 unlighted towers, all quite low compared to broadcast radio or cell towers. About 60 feet tall. The setting is very much like that of an oceanfront beach house, with a gorgeous, unobstructed view of the ocean – but perhaps with a radio or water tower behind the house on the other side of the road. The towers are very low wattage – used only to relay airline communications. In more than 20 years of renting the house (hundreds of parties), we have had only 4 or 5 guests tell us that the towers affected their enjoyment in any way. We believe that the view photos on our web pages and the testimonials from our guests speak for themselves, but if you’d like to have a clearer sense what you see from the back of the house we are glad to send a photo taken from the parking area.

3. Although the house has Wifi, we cannot allow video streaming (Netflix, YouTube etc.). Our internet service is through Hughesnet, a satellite provider - the only option in our remote location. Satellite internet speeds are marginal for video streaming. Also - like all satellite services, Hughesnet gives a fixed data allowance each month. We are on their highest-data plan, but, even so, just a few HD streamed movies will consume an entire month's allowance. We do have DirctTV satellite cable as well as a DVD player at the house.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the house, the setting, or anything else, please don't hesitate to email or call us before submitting your booking request. You can do this easily by using the "Contact the Owner" form at right.

About Dan O'Neill

I'm a Charlottesville/Albemarle County native. Both my parents' families were peach orchardists - my father grew up at the base of this mountain near the little town of Crozet. As boys, he and his brothers would often hike to the top - to take in the panoramic views and exult in the feeling of being on top of the world (a rare enough experience in the depression years of the 1930s). My wife and I built this house in 1986 as our weekend retreat (and completely remodeled it in 2009). We live in Charlottesville, where I'm a farm and estate broker and she is a professor of English at UVa. We have one daughter, who lives in Washington, DC.

Dan O'Neill purchased this house in 1986

Our Re-introduction to Beauty, Peace and Quiet

  • 5 of 5

We've stayed on other properties in northwest Virginia, but this one looked and felt like someone really took their time finding, building and furnishing a true escape from overpopulated reality. The bay windows and the view from the roof were only part of what we happily wrapped around ourselves for a week. The furnishings were comfortable, even the kitchen had it's view and we want to thank the owner for familiarizing us with the back-up power source when the weather decided to give one last winter blast to spice up our experience. I don't think I've ever taken so many pictures. Our compliments to the owner and how much he has obviously put into this beautiful place.

Gorgeous Getaway

  • 5 of 5

I've stayed here many times and love it more with each visit. The house is clean and has everything you need for a comfortable stay. The views are to-die-for and the hiking is great. I'm looking forward to going back soon!

Exceptional and Dramatic; This Mountain-top Home Is A Destination!

  • 5 of 5

What an amazing place!

The clouds are (almost) as lively as the sea (and I am decidedly in love with the water). I was married in the Pyrenees, have hiked and driven the Dolomites and the Alps when I was in my 20s, spent time in the volcanoes of Guatemala and Japan, and been all through the Canadian Rockies. All nice, but none of it has made me a "mountain person". I am, and always will be, inextricably linked with the water, particularly in warmer climes, but I am coming back HERE!

Our family of four genuinely loved your home, and there are not words to describe the views. One problem... We did not even want to go hiking! Why would we? The minute we arrived at your home at the top of Bucks Elbow Mountain, we had the best views to be found in this entire section of the Appalachians!

My advice to all future guests would be to take in your groceries, and pick up the local wines from all of the great nearby vineyards BEFORE arriving at the house. You will not want to leave to do anything, I assure you.

By the way, I own four vacation rentals in several places myself, and I pride myself on doing a good job. I look for the same in my hosts when I stay elsewhere. Dan knows how to run his show, believe me!

We played the board games that were there, cooked, watched a little basketball, and worked (since the internet was plenty good enough - both my wife and I work independently, and this is a must). The best thing though... Constantly going out on the multiple decks, including the roof, to take hundreds of photos during the day of the changing clouds BELOW us, and viewing the Milky Way at night!

See you soon!

Great House with Amazing Views

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed the first week of October. The views are amazing. We enjoyed sitting on the many porches enjoying our cocktails and snacks and taking in the scenery. The first night the cattle slowly meandered into the field behind the house where they grazed and eventually settled in for the night. There were fascinating to watch and really added to our vacation. Each night a group of 3 deer stopped in front of the house by the gate as they were passing through. And we saw a bear while we were driving along Skyline Drive. Not to mention wild turkeys and the turkeys we passed at the turkey farm going up and down the mountain.

We enjoyed walking the main road and hiking the trails on the mountain as well.

The house itself was very warm, comfortable, clean and well appointed. Just like the pictures only better in person. The kitchen was well equipped and a joy to cook in. We took a couple of side trips including driving and hiking parts of Skyline drive and visiting Monticello but always made an effort to get back to the house to catch the sun set over the mountains in the evening.

We also brought our dog (he loved the house and watching the cows) and found the area to be very pet friendly. We visited many of the local vineyards and breweries (all great!) and he was welcomed on the decks and outside areas at all of them.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to stay again. We felt refreshed and rejuvenated when after our week at Skyline Crest which is a sign of a great vacation and a really comfortable bed (it was really, really comfortable and definitely raised)!

Thanks to Dan and his crew!

Wonderful Vacation Home!

  • 5 of 5

We spent 10 days at Skyline Crest at the end of September 2016. The house was lovely. You absolutely cannot beat the view out of the floor to ceiling windows, and off the four different decks! We caught some fantastic sunset pictures from the back and roof decks, and sunrise off the east deck was amazing. Living within an hour of New York CIty, it's been a long time since I've seen that many stars, never mind seeing the Milky Way! I loved that there are cattle on the mountain, and we would often see them in the fields around the house. Also saw a bear climbing nearby trees a couple times while we were there.

The house itself is welcoming and comfortable. The modern kitchen makes cooking easy and convenient. Just about any utensil you need will be there. There is plenty of space to spread out and relax. Hardwood floors throughout add to the sense of comfort the house provides. We did end up using the bedroom downstairs, as the Master bedroom upstairs has a beautiful king bed that is high enough that step stools are provided for access in and out of bed. Not a problem if you are tall, but at 5'2" , it was just too high for me to be comfortable with. Oh, and do be sure to use the Master bathroom's whirlpool tub.

The road (2 miles) from the private gate to the house IS a well maintained gravel road, but the state/county road (3 miles) up to the gate is not nearly as well maintained. At points, it is a one lane road, and is rutted and lends itself to a washboard feel. The owner does say it is a 20 minute ride from the paved road to the house, and he is not exaggerating!! Some of the foggy days, it took us more than a half hour to make the trip (up or down). I realize the owners have NO control over the public hwy, but it was a bit scary the first few times we did it. The other part of this is that it does not lend itself to a "quick trip" into town for coffee and the paper, etc. The trip in and out from the house is at least a 40 minute ride. As long as you are fine with this, it is not a problem! Also, FYI, cell service at the house and in that part of Va., is spotty.

Dan, the owner, was great! He gave us great information about all aspects of the house (TV, internet, generator, etc), and checked in via txt and e-mail to be sure we had everything we needed.

All in all, if you are looking for a secluded, gorgeous spot to vacation, Skyline Crest should definitely be on your list!!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for this nice review, Lynn. Sorry the state road was a bit rough during your stay. We'd had big rains, which will cause some ruts and washboard areas. The highway dept. comes out 3 or 4 times a year and does a good job of grading and putting down new gravel.

Car: necessary

Within walking distance of the Appalachian Trail and its vast network of side trails within the Shenandoah National Park. The area around Charlottesville is host to many distinguished wineries, and there is a first-class micro-brewery right at the foot of the mountain. Local orchards offer peach picking in late summer, apples in the fall. Springtime is for ripe strawberries and raspberries.
