Skyline Crest - Spectacular Blue Ridge Mountain Retreat

60 Reviews
Bedrooms 2
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

Photos and Description of this Crozet holiday house

House, 2 Bedrooms, Sofabed, 2 Baths (Sleeps 4 - 6)

Skyline Crest is a private mountain-top retreat high in the Blue Ridge Mountains west of Charlottesville, Virginia.

Part of a 1,400-acre gated compound bordering the Shenandoah National Park, the property offers supreme privacy in one of the most spectacular natural settings in the Eastern Mountains. Deer, bear and turkey wander through the forests and open fields. Hawks soar overhead. An elevation of 3,200 feet ensures cool temperatures and constant breezes throughout the summer.

The views from the striking contemporary house are breathtaking - a 120-mile panorama from the level Piedmont in the east, over the near Blue Ridge and the Shenandoah Valley to the distant Alleghenies, fading far into West Virginia. (See the video link on this page, or go to: Five decks, including a spacious rooftop deck, open onto the various daytime vistas - and at night provide for thrilling star-gazing under some of the darkest skies in the Mid-Atlantic.

The house itself (2 bedrooms, 2 full baths) features every modern convenience, including a state-of-the art kitchen, satellite TV and wireless internet.

Although it feels like a world apart, Skyline Crest is only 40 minutes from Charlottesville and Jefferson's University of Virginia, giving you easy access to all the cultural amenities that a cosmopolitan University community can offer. There are many distinguished vineyards in the vicinity, and wines from the Monticello American Viticultural Area (named for Jefferson's home) are considered among the best produced anywhere in the Eastern United States. Also nearby is Wintergreen, the renowned four-season resort, featuring two award-winning golf courses and some of the best skiing and snowboarding south of New England.

Two final notes:

1. Skyline Crest is located at the summit of Buck's Elbow Mountain, just above the town of Crozet. We like guests to know that the drive ends with a 5 mile ascent up a gravel road. It's a very good road, well maintained and, except in snow or ice, fine for 2-wheel drive. (See the picture in our Photos section.) It is, however, curvy and steep in places. In the winter months, because weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, we do recommend 4-wheel drive.

2. At the very top of the Mountain, about 150 yards behind our house, there is a small complex of FAA radio towers. These don't interfere in any way with our views, a 270-degree panorama facing entirely in the other direction. But you do see them as you drive up, and from the parking area at the rear of our property. There are 6 unlighted towers, all quite low compared to broadcast radio or cell towers. About 60 feet tall. The setting is very much like that of an oceanfront beach house, with a gorgeous, unobstructed view of the ocean – but perhaps with a radio or water tower behind the house on the other side of the road. The towers are very low wattage – used only to relay airline communications. In more than 20 years of renting the house (hundreds of parties), we have had only 4 or 5 guests tell us that the towers affected their enjoyment in any way. We believe that the view photos on our web pages and the testimonials from our guests speak for themselves, but if you’d like to have a clearer sense what you see from the back of the house we are glad to send a photo taken from the parking area.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the house, the setting, or anything else, please don't hesitate to email or call us before submitting your booking request. You can do this easily by using the "Contact the Owner" form at right.

About Dan O'Neill

I'm a Charlottesville/Albemarle County native. Both my parents' families were peach orchardists - my father grew up at the base of this mountain near the little town of Crozet. As boys, he and his brothers would often hike to the top - to take in the panoramic views and exult in the feeling of being on top of the world (a rare enough experience in the depression years of the 1930s). My wife and I built this house in 1986 as our weekend retreat (and completely remodeled it in 2009). We live in Charlottesville, where I'm a farm and estate broker and she is a professor of English at UVa. We have one daughter, who lives in Washington, DC.

Wonderful Vacation Home!

  • 5 of 5

We spent 10 days at Skyline Crest at the end of September 2016. The house was lovely. You absolutely cannot beat the view out of the floor to ceiling windows, and off the four different decks! We caught some fantastic sunset pictures from the back and roof decks, and sunrise off the east deck was amazing. Living within an hour of New York CIty, it's been a long time since I've seen that many stars, never mind seeing the Milky Way! I loved that there are cattle on the mountain, and we would often see them in the fields around the house. Also saw a bear climbing nearby trees a couple times while we were there.

The house itself is welcoming and comfortable. The modern kitchen makes cooking easy and convenient. Just about any utensil you need will be there. There is plenty of space to spread out and relax. Hardwood floors throughout add to the sense of comfort the house provides. We did end up using the bedroom downstairs, as the Master bedroom upstairs has a beautiful king bed that is high enough that step stools are provided for access in and out of bed. Not a problem if you are tall, but at 5'2" , it was just too high for me to be comfortable with. Oh, and do be sure to use the Master bathroom's whirlpool tub.

The road (2 miles) from the private gate to the house IS a well maintained gravel road, but the state/county road (3 miles) up to the gate is not nearly as well maintained. At points, it is a one lane road, and is rutted and lends itself to a washboard feel. The owner does say it is a 20 minute ride from the paved road to the house, and he is not exaggerating!! Some of the foggy days, it took us more than a half hour to make the trip (up or down). I realize the owners have NO control over the public hwy, but it was a bit scary the first few times we did it. The other part of this is that it does not lend itself to a "quick trip" into town for coffee and the paper, etc. The trip in and out from the house is at least a 40 minute ride. As long as you are fine with this, it is not a problem! Also, FYI, cell service at the house and in that part of Va., is spotty.

Dan, the owner, was great! He gave us great information about all aspects of the house (TV, internet, generator, etc), and checked in via txt and e-mail to be sure we had everything we needed.

All in all, if you are looking for a secluded, gorgeous spot to vacation, Skyline Crest should definitely be on your list!!

Amazing view!

  • 5 of 5

Amazing view! Wow! The house was everything we wanted and needed to unwind for a few days in total seclusion. The owner was not physically present but he checked in with us before during and after our stay via email and also sent us incredibly detailed directions on everything we needed to know.

We hope to return again in the future!

Front row view to the heavens.

Upon approaching the property there were cattle across the road and in front of our gate. We were thinking, "oh, no, what if they don't move?!" No problem, the cattle backed away to a comfortable distance and we pulled right in. They continued to amuse us the entirety of our stay. There were also many interesting birds to watch.

The ride up the mountain was on a wide, well groomed gravel road. It did get pretty steep but at no time did we feel unsafe. The directions provided by the owner, Dan, were spot on. We absolutely loved the home. It was well stocked with linens, kitchenware, and entertainment. I wish there had been more time to indulge in the wonderful selection of books.

The stars at night were amazing. We spotted two! shooting stars in the gorgeous night sky. The views of the Blue Ridge Mountains were indeed spectacular. We were so high up that on the one night it rained we were surrounded by a cloud. Just a short distance down the mountain we were able to hop onto a trail which lead to the infamous Appalachian Trail. A definite bonus for the hikers in our family.

If you are looking for a calming get away with no worries Skyline Crest should be on your agenda.

This was the second stay at Skyline Crest for my family and it was amazing. The house is roomy and comfortable and the setting and view are gorgeous. Having great hiking so close by was a huge plus for us as well. Dan is super responsive and accommodating as well, which is much appreciated. We look forward to yet another stay.

Pretty Location - Significant Issues

  • 3 of 5

We have traveled extensively in many countries as well as within the United States. We are happy to pay top dollar charged by hoteliers for appropriate accommodations and have always been treated fairly. I must add that I have NEVER previously left a review on a lodging site.

FIRST: The home is located in a lovely setting. It is remote, ideal for a honeymoon or retreat, and the driving directions given by the owner were spot on.

SECOND: The 5-mile gravel road leading to the secluded home was extremely rough, and we were grateful we were not using our own vehicle, due to the extreme rattles and bumps.

THIRD: The furnishings need upgrading (for the price), the house itself needs maintenance, and the amenities were few. Linens, sofa, and beds were well worn, and many light bulbs needed replacing. We had to buy our own Kleenex and bathroom tissue by the third day. We saw dead bugs in the bathroom and found dirty dishes in the kitchen cupboard.

LAST: The power went out at 10:00 p.m. on our fifth night. That means no flushing toilets, no water for showers, no coffee the next morning, and no lights. When we talked to the owner the next morning, he told us the power would be restored between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Facing that time span, we packed up and left at 9:30 a.m. in order to have access to water and plumbing. We requested a refund for the lost night since we drove to a hotel, thereby paying twice for the same night. As of yet, no refund has been processed.

The power outage was NOT the owner's fault. HOWEVER, no reputable hotel would expect its guests to stay and pay for a rental in which there are no toilets, running water and lights. The instructions to power the generator were too complex for us, and we had no snake leggings to even access the generator! We feel our refund request for the lost night, given these circumstances, should have been honored.

Owner's Response: We’re unhappy any time our guests are less than 100% satisfied, but it’s especially disappointing when we’ve not been given the chance to address their concerns. These guests left a voicemail around 8:15 AM their last full day, saying they had lost power at 10:00 the night before. Our power company has an online real-time outage map with estimated restore times. By 8:30, I had called the guests back, apologizing for the inconvenience, and letting them know that power was projected to be back on as early as 11:00 AM. We have a whole-house generator, with pre-printed instructions. I told them that if they felt comfortable with the start-up process (3 connections to switch on) they could have power right away. If not, I asked that we wait until 11 and if the power was not on by then, I would come up to the house (a 45 minute drive) and start the generator myself. They said this would be fine. But at 10:15 I received a text saying that they had not felt comfortable starting the generator, had left, and “would appreciate” a refund. I checked the outage map, and saw that power had been restored. I texted back with this news, and asked them to consider coming back. I heard nothing more until this review appeared. Although we are not obligated to refund for outages of less than 24 hrs, we will always consider exceptions. I don’t know that I would have agreed in this case (the problem was solved within 2 hours of our receiving notice), but I would have been willing to discuss it. An entire paragraph of our property description is devoted to the access road. It’s a good gravel road, but on a 5-mile climb up a mountain there will be some rattles and bumps. As for the house itself, we follow a strict maintenance schedule, inside and out, with regular attention to paint, decks, interior furnishings etc., and have had no complaints from recent guests. Kleenex, lightbulbs etc: Had they called to let us know they were running low on any of these items (this was a week-long stay), we would have given them access to our supply closet, where they would have found replacements. Bugs: it’s a country house, and the occasional fly does get in. With our remote location, our cleaners sometimes have to clean a day or two before a guest’s arrival, during which time a fly may expire. There’s a hand vac upstairs. No excuse for the dirty dish in the cupboard. My guess is that a prior guest didn’t check carefully when unloading the dishwasher, but we should have caught that.

Car: necessary

Within walking distance of the Appalachian Trail and its vast network of side trails within the Shenandoah National Park. The area around Charlottesville is host to many distinguished wineries, and there is a first-class micro-brewery right at the foot of the mountain. Local orchards offer peach picking in late summer, apples in the fall. Springtime is for ripe strawberries and raspberries.
