Overview

About the property

2 bedrooms, 1 full bathroom sleeps 3

Cozy private cottage on our sheep farm in the mountains of West Rupert. No other houses are visible from the cottage. Visitors have called it a retreat and an oasis. Warm weather sit in the Adirondack chairs on the patio overlooking the pristine year round brook. Cold weather fire up the wood-stove. We get lots of compliments on the book selection at the cottage - and several writers and artists have visited. The property provides a respite yet is within easy distance of Manchester and the Mountains and the surrounding area. We maintain 4 notebooks at the cottage filled with brochures about activities in the area ranging from sports, arts, shopping to dining etc. Although we did not lose power during Irene and Sandy the cottage now has its very own generator in case of power outage.

A perfect weekend getaway

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend, dog and I stayed here for 3 nights in January 2017. The cabin is simple and secluded - exactly what we wanted. There's no TV or cell service, which forced us to spend the weekend enjoying long dog walks and reading by the warm wood stove fireplace. The cabin did provide Wifi. The hosts live in a house on the same land - we didn't interact with them much besides occasional phone calls, though they were incredibly friendly and hospitable, offering assistance as needed. Being dog owners, one of our favorite parts was to visit a place so welcoming of my 70 lb dog. Not only were there no extra pet fees, but they provided crates, dog towels and dog blankets for the weekend as well. The cabin is about 30 minutes from Manchester, and the roads in between are windy and dark if driving at night - something to keep in mind if looking to spend significant time in that area. Thanks so much to these wonderful hosts for providing us such a relaxing weekend away!

What a wonderful place to stay!!

  • 5 of 5

This is our second visit to the cottage, and this cottage is perfection. There is a lovely babbling creek that runs behind the house which makes this place charming!

We will visit for a third time in the summer months to get a different perspective of the scenery.

Owner's Response: Hi Kelley, It was great to hear that you and Michael enjoyed sitting next to the woodstove and relaxing - it brought back sweet memories of when the cabin was our vacation home for 17 years. That is exactly what Ray and I did! See you soon! Joanne

MAGICAL Place!!!

  • 5 of 5

I was looking for an adventure, and I found it!!

We had a family re-union planned in VT and had a large house rented for that weekend. My husband and I decided to go up a week early, and "chill" before the big event. So I began to look on Homeaway for small places.

I was captivated by the pictures of this cabin, and after reading ALL the reviews (3 times!), I decided this was it. Parts of this wonderful cabin date back to 1865. I once lived in a cottage of similar age in another state, and I was familiar with the layout: small rooms, low ceilings upstairs, non-code winding staircase. I loved it!

But this cabin has its own magical quality, because of hand-hewn woodwork throughout the first floor. Every corner of it is magnificent. I learned from Joanne that a previous owner did all this beautiful craftsmanship himself. I can just imagine him searching for the unusual pieces of wood from the Vermont countryside, and then working it all by hand into artistic furnishing. And don't forget the beautiful FLOORS, also hand worked by this talented artist. It truly is magnificent - original woodworking art!

So, all I have to say is: read the reviews - they are all 5-star, and all true!!

Some basic highlights:

- owner, Joanne, is charming and helpful.

- notebooks are in the house with all local hikes, parks, forests, restaurants, etc. Allow some time to read them to plan your time for what meets your needs most. Or, if you won't have time to waste on reading, research in advance, online, some of the items mentioned in the reviews, such as Merck Forest.

- WONDERFUL short hike up the meadow to the 2 chairs for relaxing, with woods beyond if you want to hike further.

- breakfast on the porch, with the little creek meandering past.

- kitchen was great. We ate in a lot of meals, as well as hosted 4 more family members for dinner one night, with a table leaf we found upstairs. You can cook yourself, or buy meals to go from Dorset Union Store, which is 20 minutes away. (Google it!)

- yes, bathroom is downstairs, which can be challenging with the bedrooms upstairs. But that's part of the adventure!

- totally THRILLED with our week in this magical place!!!!

- Thanks, Joanne, we hope to return soon!!!

Replenish with Nature in the Mountains

  • 5 of 5

-This cottage was exactly what I was looking for and met all of my expectations. Tucked away in Kent Hollow in the Taconic Mountains (not the Green's) of Rupert is this quaint and idyllic getaway. The listing description was accurate and provided a great deal of information. The property was clean and proper inside and out upon my arrival and I was sure to leave it that way when I departed. There were no logistical issues/problems with the cottage at all. The owners provided great customer service and made clear that they were there to help or answer any questions. Not only would I recommend this property to others, but I wished I could share this place with many people while I was there. My only recommendation would be that the owners post some pictures of the kitchen on the website. I had actually asked for some when going through the renting process. The kitchen was perfect however; with lots of space, big refrigerator, good size stove/oven, and lots of counter room.

-I arrived Tuesday through rain and sleet. Nearby Bear and Spruce Mountains were shrouded with fog and the upper reaches of the trees had ice/snow on them giving them that "frosty" look, beautiful. After settling I drove down to where Hebron Road meets the D&H Rail Trail, right in Rupert. I walked north on the Delaware & Hudson RT for two miles out and back, for a nice total of 4 miles. Wednesday I hiked Haystack Mountain in Pawlet, the next town just to the north of Rupert. Haystack is called the "Gibraltar of Vermont" as it's shear rock face rises abruptly from the hills that surround it. The owner asked me to leave details/directions in one of the information binders in the cottage, as she had not heard of it before. The hike is 3.4 miles with approx 1,100 feet in elevation gain. The cold front the day before broke the weather to clear blue skies with warmer temperatures. Thursday I checked out Merck Forest and Farm Center. I would say this is the highlight of Rupert. I hiked Antone Mountain from the main entrance on Route 315. The hike was 5 miles with approx 800 feet in elevation gain. I departed the cottage Friday. I stopped in Manchester Center on my way home and spend a few hours walking around and checking out the shops. My favorite store was probably Northshire Bookstore and I loved the Factory Point Town Green.

-My original plan was to visit the greater Manchester area, but I realized that Rupert had so much to offer for me. It is a hub for outdoor recreation and is beautiful.

Cozy & Tranquil. A Perfect Vermont Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I, along with our two dogs, had an amazing four days in this picture perfect cottage nestled alongside a beautiful creek. The cottage has everything you could need and is truly a relaxing retreat in a beautiful part of Vermont. This is an ideal spot for anyone looking to relax, take in the gorgeous surroundings, and curl up with a good book (or one of your 4-legged friends). We can't wait to return again and enjoy all this lovely property has to offer.

I wish we could have stayed longer!

  • 5 of 5

This place is completely private and wonderfully secluded! The owners went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and everything was just right when there was a minor hiccup with the sink. The cottage is nestled at the base of a hill (mountain?), with a brook right in the back. I would imagine on warm nights, the sound of the brook is amazingly soothing (it was too cold on our visit to leave windows and doors open!). You can also trek up the hill and star gaze in two chairs halfway up. The kitchen is nicely apportioned. It is the perfect little home away from home! The upstairs is a little difficult to get up and down (especially in the middle of the night when you have to pee!), but they also provide a pull out sofa downstairs for those that need it.
