Keewaydin Island is accessible only by boat, and it forms part of Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. It is an 8 mile long barrier island, just off the coast of Naples, between Gordon Pass and Marco Island, with a peaceful, unspoiled white sugar sand beach. Sunshine, gulf beaches, blue skies, fresh air and peace and quiet abound. If you need a break from the mad pace of urban living today...a week of relaxing at Yellowbird may be your perfect rejuvenator.
Wildlife is abundant, including dolphins, manatees, key deer, armadillos, and many osprey nests with fledglings being cared from by doting parents. Keewaydin is a migration stopover for 150 different species of interesting birds on their way North or South, and many who live here year-round, including eagles, pelicans, and the gorgeous large pink roseate spoonbills. If you are ever fortunate enough to see one fly over you, I guarantee your heart will stop.
This is a great place to unwind. You can swim and sun, walk and talk, boogie-board or stand-up paddleboard, go kayaking, collect shells on the beach, fish from dock, boat or beach, read, write, relax and re-connect with your yourself and your loved ones, and with the beauty of nature. And yet you are only 30 minutes from civilization and its benefits, if you want it or need it.
It's not too good to be true.
It's here...waiting for you.
I have spent 30 years with the military and also worked with the Department of State; so I have been fortunate enough to meet many terrific people. Over the past 10 years, I have also rented a number of beach houses around Florida to include the Keys, North Captiva, and Cayo Costa. My wife and I have found no people more amenable or helpful than Ahmed and Kathy. They will attend to your needs and make you feel like part of the family and not just anther customer. Ahmed is attentive and much like that fun uncle you had or wish you had while growing up. Kathy is extremely efficient and responsive. Together they are an unbeatable pair.
Unlike other rentals, the photos actually and accurately depict what you get. All rooms, furniture, appliances and beach equipment is first class. We were also there in mid June and the A/C worked fine with no complaints.
I've been shelling, fishing and swimming on many Florida beaches and could surpass this place. I've never seen so many shells in pristine condition. I caught snook off the beach and my wife literally swam with a dolphin.
No. I'm not related or being paid to write such a review. In fact, I really don't like writing and have never taken the time to write a review before. Yellowbird by the Sea is a first class operation.
Yellowbird, and hosts, Kathy and Ahmed, are a treasure! 4 siblings with friends/partners, we all had plenty of space and seclusion, as well as wonderfully connected family time. Ahmed and Kathy have thought of everything, and were incredibly accommodating to our needs, especially around arrival and departure. The house is exactly as described. Although it is possible to get to Marco Island for groceries, or Naples to have a look around, the wonder of Keewaydin Island is staying put, enjoying the miles of sandy beach, shelling, soaking up the natural beauty.
The kitchen is well appointed and the pleasures of cooking and dining were certainly an enjoyable part of our stay. Plan shopping carefully, as there is no grocery store "next door"! I had planned on baking and forgot to pick up any baking soda/powder (found some later) so enjoyed learning about baking with beer instead! Ah, the things one can learn on vacation!
If the availability of Yellowbird coincides with your dates, if you are a lover of nature and beauty, if shopping (or at least limited shopping) is not your thing, then do not hesitate to book. We will definitely keep this gem on our radar for a possible return trip.
Thanks so much, Kathy and Ahmed! Wishing you the best always.
Every few years, we vacation with a group of our friends (usually 3 other couples) to celebrate a milestone birthday for someone in our group. We usually try to find a beach location that is somewhat unique where one can really feel like they are "getting away from it all". Yellowbird by the Sea fit the bill perfectly! If someone blindfolded you and dropped you on Keewaydin Island, you might think you were on a very secluded island somewhere in the Caribbean. With the exception of the buildings on Marco Island far off in the distance, there is very little sign of civilization around you. The white sand beach is wide and the water is as beautiful as you'll see most anywhere on the coast of the United States. There are only about a dozen homes on the 8 mile long island, so there are very few people to be seen anywhere on the beach in the vicinity of Yellowbird by the Sea.
The owners property description is very detailed and accurate, so I won't repeat it all here ... just a few notable items. The house is quite new (I believe about five years old), and extremely well equipped. Virtually everything you need is there, including kitchen supplies, beach towels, kayaks, paddle boards, fishing equipment, etc. Perhaps most importantly, a 20' deck boat is INCLUDED in the rental! This is a tremendous value and is great for pleasure excursions or if you need to return to "civilization" to replenish supplies.
Finally, if you read all the other reviews you will see over and over again how owners Kathy & Ahmed were so gracious, welcoming, helpful, accommodating, and pleasant. We couldn't agree more. They really are great hosts and do everything they can to make sure you have a great vacation.
If you're looking for a secluded, off the grid, relaxing beachfront vacation .... Yellowbird by the Sea is a perfect choice.
We went to Yellowbird by the sea for a 60th birthday celebration for my husband as well as one of our other friends. The place was spectacular, we had such a great time with good friends, good food, great atmosphere, etc. The place was fully stocked with everything and anything you would need in case you left anything home. All the fun water toys and everything else. Unfortunately the weather wasn't the best but we made the best of it and did get at least 2 beach days! Luckily the house was stacked with games because we played many games and put puzzles together while the rain was falling and the wind was blowing. I wouldn't change a thing. Thanks to the owners for being so accommodating.
We had a beautiful stay at Yellowbird by the Sea. The whoosh of the waves from the Gulf lulled us to sleep each night in the super comfy beds. The piles and mounds and stretches of shells of all kinds (whelks, cats paws, scallops, mermaids toenails, conches, oysters, sand dollars, sea stars) enchanted us. The long quiet walks with children and grandchildren soothed our collective soul. Your home on wonderful Keewaydin Island was a sweet find. Thanks to the Yellowbird Hosts, for taking such good care of us. We will be back! The Rupperts
Our experience at Yellowbird was one of the best I have ever had. We travel a lot and try to find places different every time and this one totally fit the bill. It is a very well stocked rental. All you need is to bring your food and drinks. The bedrooms are very private with a private screened in balcony and your own bathroom. The living area,( living room, Kitchen, Dining area, Screened dining and sitting space and bbq) is on the third floor and this gives you a great view of the ocean and the property. Lots of places to sit and enjoy your time. Kayaks, paddle boards, body boards, volleyball, horseshoes, lots of games and a variety of DVD's, are only a few things to keep you busy. WI-FI works great. We had 8 adults and we were all able to get on the internet at all times. You can also fish off the dock, take the boat out or fish on the beach. The beach is very private as there are very few residents on the island. It is also a shell collectors paradise. We took the boat to Marco Island shopping and eating. Also just a short ride back to Naples to pick up your car where you boarded to go shopping or explore the area. Our hosts Kathy and Ahmed were so accomodating. Any questions we had were answered immediately as Kathy had her phone on 24 hours a day. I have dealt with many rentals and this was one of the best experiences we have had. The Three Sixty market where you dock is a must eat choice. It is a little pricey but we found it worth it. This is a very peaceful and quiet home. I would highly recommend it.
Keewaydin is a barrier island that hugs the coast of Naples. It is a 30 minute boat ride through beautiful Naples Bay. The island is a nature preserve, part of Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. 8 mile long pristine white sugar sand beach, unspoiled flora and fascinating wildlife abound. Back to nature - but not too far - and in comfort!
