Guestbook comments from the owner

Bride – two thumbs ups – loved it!

Groom – sometimes you do things just because they are funny.

Great time, gorgeous weather, good food & great people. Enjoyed hiking, grilling, catching up and even some dancing! Dancing was during sampling of “Scottish Scotch from Scotland”

After many great times and infinite laughs, discovery of the “song-bird or our generation” and enjoyment of wildlife, we celebrated the wedding.

Christmas at Bristlecone

  • 5 of 5

My family and I spent Christmas at Bristlecone, our total stay was for 6 days. The house was very clean, and it is very spacious; more than enough room for all 20 of us. The house is beautiful, it sits on a hill and is surrounded by mountains. It has awesome views from every room! There’s two Chimneys, upstairs and downstairs which kept us nice and warm during those minus degree temperatures. The bedrooms are large, all but one have king size beds. The dorm-like bedroom has 3 beds and some inflatable mattresses, 8 kids stayed here and they loved it! Both the owner and the property manager were available to help at all times. The kitchen is huge, plenty of room for all. It is equipped with everything you need cook your own meals, the only thing we didn’t find was a blender/food processor. It really wasn’t a big deal, but it would have helped with some of the meals we wanted to prepare. It truly is getting away from it all, which is what we wanted. We had AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon cell phones but only Verizon worked, there’s Wi-Fi but if you connect too many devices it slows down. The kids preferred to be outside sledding in the snow so no Wi-Fi, no problem. We will definitely stay here again in the future, maybe for the summer this time. Lastly, I want to say thank you once again to Stephen for all the help he provided; especially on the night of our arrival when we got stuck in the snow. We will be better prepared next time.

Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful house and vista for our family's yearly get together over New Years. Plenty of room for 18 and the dorm style room was perfect for the 8 granddaughters. Lots of snow for sledding and made for great pictures. The ranch worker was great on keeping us loaded with firewood since the temps outside was below zero for a few days. Hope to be back for a fall visit sometime soon. Would highly recommend to others, owner very easy to work with.

Beautiful wedding and vacation site!

  • 5 of 5

This past July, our family gathered at Bristlecone Ranch for a four day vacation followed by our daughter’s wedding at this beautiful site. This "rustic elegance" house was above our expectations (booked it sight unseen for the wedding) and provided a great gathering place for our family and the bride’s entourage (20 people ). For the ceremony, the mountains provided the perfect backdrop to the “wedding meadow” and the great room of the house accommodated the sit-down dinner for 70+ people. (Furniture rearranged and banquet tables, etc. rented and delivered from Pueblo). There were gorgeous evening views off the balcony (while dancing!) and through the wall of windows in the great room. Fantastic local caterer, Annalee Hickey and the wonderful ranch caretaker, Stephen, were beyond helpful! The owner was so easy to work with and we really appreciated being able to communicate directly with him. This is a great venue for a family reunion or vacation or small wedding. Our daughter and son-in-law had the wedding they dreamed of - Thank you!! Would love to gather there again for a family reunion in the future.

Family Vacation

Beautiful surroundings and perfect accommodations combined to make precious memories for our family of 12. Perfect place to celebrate a 60th birthday and get to know the newest grandchild! Plenty of room for all with incredible views of the Spanish Peaks. Did not take long to feel peaceful and relaxed! Trails were explored along with shopping and dining in La Veta and Cuchara. Hope to book again and would definitely recommend to others.

beautiful home

  • 4 of 5

The property is absolutely beautiful - the common spaces of this house and the views are amazing. The bedrooms are fairly large -- four private bedrooms with king beds, and the fifth dorm like bedroom filled with a mix of beds and air mattresses. Everyone who stayed with us really enjoyed the place, and noted that it would be perfect for family reunions. Although I had a few minor issues during our stay, I found that both the owner and property manager really care about the satisfaction of their customers and worked to correct any issues.

One important thing to note - expect to disconnect... you are in the mountains so there is virtually no cell service, and the property uses satellite internet, which is extremely slow and can only support one or two devices at a time. For us, this was a plus, but for many, it may not be. Also, if you are an avid ping-pong player, be aware there is a crack in the table -- it's still functional, but can make the balls bounce a little wonky.

Owner's Response: Our focus is on the guest experience and we appreciate the compliments as well as any criticism concerning areas for improvement. There are cell phone carriers that perform better than others in the area. Verizon works well for me. During my time living at the house, I ran a business using the existing Internet/Wi-Fi service with as many as 6 of us on-line at the same time, so I am wondering if it is not performing properly. We’ll have the internet provider make a service call to ensure all is running in tip top condition and pursue improved service to the area if it is available. We’ll also replace the ping pong table. Hope to see these guests again. They were a great group.

Things To Do In / Near La Veta:.......... DOWNTOWN LA VETA.....This small, laid-back town at the base of the majestic Spanish Peaks is located along the Scenic Highway of Legends, La Veta, the vein, served as a vital lifeline a century ago; the town was originally a busy trading center, supplying the nearby area with goods. It is now home to a diverse population of artists and ranchers. Nine buildings on the site of an adobe trading post make up the Fort Francisco Museum. In addition to a schoolhouse and re-created general store, the fort contains collections of furniture, clothing, tools and more. While in town, visit the Spanish Peaks Arts Council and other local galleries for exhibits of local artists' works. Enjoy dinner at the historic La Veta Inn in the heart of town. Just down the street is the Ryus Avenue Bakery. The town offers numerous antique and gift shops for you to peruse. (19 min, 14 mi.).............HIGHWAY OF LEGENDS SCENIC BYWAY.....The Scenic Byway follows the Cucharas River north of the pass then leads into the Purgatory River Valley. It provides beautiful views of the Spanish Peaks as it leads southward through the San Isabel National Forest. The Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range lies to the west. (23 min., 16 mi.).............ASPEN VIEWING.....The beautiful aspen is the quintessential Colorado tree. In the summer, the aspen provide shade for the state flower, the columbine; and when fall foliage comes on the scene, Coloradans rejoice as the aspens’’ quaking leaves turn their vibrant shade of gold. A trip on the Highway of Legends or virtually any other road offers some of the most beautiful aspen viewing you will ever see.............LATHROP STATE PARK..... Nestled in the shadow of the Spanish Peaks, this park offers a gentle climate, 103 campsites, fishing, water-skiing, golf, hiking and great views of the nearby mountain ranges. Lathrop offers two distinctive fishing and boating opportunities. Marin Lake is a great fishing lake which can also be enjoyed by boating enthusiasts throughout the summer. Horseshoe Lake is a no wake lake which provides ample fishing opportunity and also a beautiful serene experience for kayakers. (31 min., 24 mi.).............RIO GRAND SCENIC RAILROAD ...... Originally, these workaday trains brought supplies to inaccessible mining settlements. Today, three routes run along the edge of the San Isabel National Forest and take riders past historic places still virtually inaccessible any other way. In the warmer months, riders can often see bears along the route to La Veta. Start and End Points are 1) La Veta to Alamosa, and 2) Alamos/Antonito or Alamosa to Monte Vista. (26 min., 14 mi.)...........GRANDOTE PEAKS GOLF CLUB .....Experience Grandote Peaks Golf Club one of the finest and most affordable golf courses in Colorado. You’ll find this beautiful Weiskopf/Morrish layout at the base of the majestic Spanish Peaks with spectacular views of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range. The town is surrounded by the San Isabel National Forest with all its' lakes, mountains and wilderness. On the east side of town is the West Spanish Peak. The Cuchara River flows along the edge of town. About 8 miles south of Cuchara Pass is North Lake State Wildlife Area, a trophy fishing area. A little further south is Monument Lake Park, a full service facility on the shores of Monument Lake. (48 min., 28 mi.)............... GREAT SAND DUNES......The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve features the tallest dunes in North America and is just 35 miles northeast of Alamosa. It is an easy drive by U.S. 160. Against the backdrop of rugged 14,000-foot peaks in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the 30-square mile dune field, with no designated trails, invites you to explore freely. The natural system of the Park ranges from sand dunes to forests, from cottonwood groves to majestic mountain peaks and tundra. The highest elevation in the park is 13,604'. Play in intermittent Medano Creek, hike forest trails, or camp in the back country (1 hr. 8 min., 57 mi.)............... TAOS, NM.....Take a moment to explore Taos and discover the beauty, the culture, the people that make Taos and Northern New Mexico the Land of Enchantment. Seated on the high-desert mesa at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Taos is rich with art and steeped in history.
