Choose holiday rentals in Ballina, New South Wales

The bustling town of Ballina, in New South Wales, offers a superb holiday destination for anyone who wants to experience fabulous beaches and a chilled-out Aussie vibe.

Situated on the banks of the Richmond River and close to Cape Byron, Ballina has a vibrant commercial centre, wonderful natural attributes and many water-based activities.

Ballina is a popular destination both for native Australians and overseas visitors, with a plethora of holiday rentals from which you can establish your base for a terrific stay.

Go with the flow

The modern town of Ballina owes its origins to Irish timber cutters who were employed to cut red cedar in the 1840s. The Aboriginal name for the area was “Bullenah”, which the settlers thought sounded like Ballina, a town in County Mayo, and so Ballina was born. The growth of the sugar cane industry and farming helped make the town as one of New South Wales’s busiest ports with cargo going up and down the Richmond River.

Today the sugar cane crop is still one of Ballina’s main industries along with tourism, fishing and the production of macadamia nuts.

Tourists are drawn here by the beautiful beaches – pristine white sand and crystal clear blue waters make the beaches safe and particularly family friendly, while also being popular with surfers and water sports enthusiasts.

The great surf means that many holiday rentals in Ballina will suit those on a tight budget but there is a wide variety, including holiday houses, villas and apartments, as well as self-contained accommodation.

Visitors will find plenty of restaurants, bars and cafes in which to soak up the sun and enjoy famed Aussie hospitality with locally-caught seafood and shellfish prominent on most menus.

In fact, if you are up for it, you can have your own catch of the day with fishing trips popular both offshore and in the river estuaries and tidal lagoons.

Spreading your wings

Deciding on holiday accommodation in Ballina will mean you are ideally placed for further exploration of the Northern Rivers region and in particular the Cape Byron area.

Just along the Pacific Highway is Byron Bay, the counter culture capital of Australia and one of the most popular tourist destinations on the continent. Here you’ll find residents and visitors thriving in the alternative lifestyles for which the town has become world famous.

As well as spa and yoga retreats, Byron Bay has excellent arts and crafts, funky stores and interesting antique shops, while its music festivals take place all year round. Its beaches are also hugely popular and the Byron Bay lighthouse, which stands on the promontory of Cape Byron, is an unmissable treat.

Nature lovers will be in their element on this coastline. Whale and dolphin watching is a thrill from June to November every year with excellent spots on the coastal headlands to catch these magnificent creatures.

The drives that make up the Rainforest Way will reveal some of the area’s rainforests and parks, and for ancient history that takes the breath away, go to Mount Warning National Park, which contains the caldera of a volcano that’s 20 million years old.

Catch some rays

The Far North Coast of New South Wales in which Ballina is situated is a sub-tropical one with hot summers where average daily temperatures reach around 32?C. Ballina does enjoy cooling breezes from the ocean and a rainy season, too, but be warned that those unused to the fierce Australian sun should follow the local advice and slap on the sunblock. If you can, look for holiday rentals with air conditioning. Winter is also warm and mild with average daily temperatures of around 26?C.

Getting there

If your ultimate Australian destination is Ballina and you’re travelling from the UK, you are likely to fly into either Sydney or Brisbane. From there, you can get a connecting flight to Ballina airport itself. Car rental will give you greater freedom to explore the town and its environs from your holiday accommodation but there are good local bus services, too.

White Cedar Apartment is Highly Recommended!

5 of 5
We stayed at White Cedar Apartment for a week recently and we really enjoyed our stay there. The owners of the property are lovely people and the apartment presents well being situated within the downstairs section of a beautiful Queenslander style house. It also represents great value for money and is very close to the main town of Bangalow. The backyard is very private and was perfect for our little Foxy to run around in. White Cedar Apartment is simply one of the best experiences we have ever had with rental accommodation, we highly recommend it!
