Bicheno: For a World-Class Beach Break

Two hours away from the capital city of Hobart, Bicheno is a well-loved holiday destination in Tasmania. The town boasts a small year-round population, which only adds to the relaxed environment that greets visitors. All holiday accommodation options in the town are comfortable and welcoming, and as an added perk, many are within easy walking distance of the pristine beaches in the area. With a mild climate that rarely sees extremely high or low temperatures and some of the longest hours of daylight in the world, Bicheno is a destination not to miss.

Water Activities in Bicheno

Bicheno is just north of the Freycinet Peninsula and offers long stretches of well-kept beaches for the enjoyment of visitors and locals alike. The waters are protected from the strong southerly currents, and the surf is gentle enough to accommodate both swimmers and water sports enthusiasts. Redbill Beach is a favourite of the area's surfers, and there is a life saving club to ensure the safety of all who enter the water. Just off the coast, Governor Island Marine Reserve offers some of the best diving in all the area. Sponge gardens and lush reefs make for unbeatable underwater scenery. Those visitors who want to be in the water without getting wet enjoy access to plenty of boating activities, including fishing, kayaking and rides in glass-bottom boats.

Bring Along Your Walking Shoes

The picturesque coastline in Bicheno is a popular place for a leisurely stroll. Make a journey over to the south side of town to visit a true natural wonder - Rocking Rock. This 80-ton hunk of granite is carefully - and naturally - balanced on the coastline and rocks back and forth as the current changes. There are walking paths surrounding this attraction and plenty of smooth area on which to walk. Just steps away from Rocking Rock is the famous Bicheno Blowhole, which at high tide is known to blow water up to 20 meters into the air. For an even more exciting adventure, wait for low tide to walk across the sand bar to access Diamond Island.

Animal Adventures

On Diamond Island, there is a large colony of tiny blue penguins known as fairy penguins. At dusk each day, guided tours are available, and this allows visitors to view the penguins in their natural setting - one that is protected from travellers who make their way over on their own.

Diamond Island's nature reserve is a hotspot for birdwatchers. The island boasts a large population of short-tailed shearwaters and sooty oystercatchers, as well as an impressive array of other species. Bring along your binoculars and reference book for the best bird watching experience.

Offering a diverse range of species, East Coast Natureworld is a fun destination that is set just outside of Bicheno. Get up close and personal with the likes of Tasmanian devils, kangaroos, quolls, wallabies, wombats and more. The park is spread over 150 acres of land and gives visitors the chance to see these animals in a natural environment.

A Town Stocked with Conveniences

In town, all of the conveniences and amenities of home are right at the fingertips of travellers. Grab a pastry from the local bakery, or sample the fresh seafood at one of the many restaurants. There is a bank with a 24-hour ATM, which is very convenient for those who need quick access to funds. A chemist, a well-stocked supermarket, a hardware store and a variety of local retailers complete the in-town picture.

A Scenic Ride

Whether you choose to drive to Bicheno or to fly into a nearby town, the view cannot be beat. Hiring a car upon arriving in Hobart and driving down the coast is one of the best ways to absorb the beauty of the area. Though the temperatures fluctuate with the seasons, the white sand of the beaches, the turquoise waters and the naturally toned rock formations are gorgeous throughout the year.

Cosy beach house in a perfect location

5 of 5
We stayed during winter and the house had good heating with the cosy fireplace going. The beds were comfortable. It was great having a cot and high chair available for our 2 year old and our 4 year old loved the bunk beds. There was also a good selection of kids books and plush toys which helped settle the kids in and made them feel at home. We could see ourselves coming back during the summer and staying for longer, the house has gorgeous beach views from all living areas and is a few steps from the beach which is stunning white sand and crystal clear water and calm water good for kids. There was also a great selection of books above the fireplace and nice touches from the owner like leaving us walnuts and chocolate, even the soap was lovely (eco store coconut bar). The fireplace was all prepped for us on arrival too and heaps of firewood provided. We didn’t get a chance to see penguins on the property as we were out during dusk both nights (and we went on a penguin tour) but I definitely heard them in the early hours of the morning so can verify they do nest on the property and we saw their footprints on the sand in the morning- amazing creatures so I think this is really special. We had a great time and hope to come back and bring family next time. Thanks for your hospitality Heather :)
