Slow-Paced Mountainside Living in Bowral

The largest town in the Southern Highlands, Bowral is a welcome countryside retreat for city dwellers and out-of-town holidaymakers, as well. The destination is set at the base of Mount Gibraltar. Grand old estates meet long expanses of colourful tulips in the Spring to give Bowral a charming and inviting feel. While history and nature are important draws of this town, boutique stores, antique shops and high-end dining establishments are other fantastic features. Bowral's population hovers right around 15,000 residents, and this gives enough diversity to make for an interesting experience without losing the small-town feel. Visitors to Bowral have access to a range of great holiday rentals, with options ranging from expansive farmhouses to quaint cottages.

The Natural Side of Bowral

One of the most enticing qualities of this countryside retreat is the shear amount of fun out in nature. The lake in Bowral is great for a number of activities; however, fly-fishing ranks at the top of the list. Both trout and bass are stocked in the waters. There is vast green space for exploration and play around the lake. For a more challenging trek, head to Mount Gibraltar. Here, there are numerous walking paths that extend up the mountain side. As you ascent the mountain, stop at the various lookout points for unbeatable vistas over the Bowral area. Of course, there are also scenic driving paths that allow you to take in the views without leaving the comfort of your vehicle.

Wine Country

The area in which Bowral is lush wine country. There are nearly 20 wineries within close proximity to the town, and this provides the right setting for a wine-lover's excursion. Because the average altitude in this region is approximately 650 metres above sea level, the grapes have an extended ripening period. Beautiful varieties of Pinot Grigio, cabernet sauvignon, Riesling and rosé are the result of this cool-climate growing conditions. Spend the day sampling the award-winning wines during a tasting tour, or just choose one of the wineries for a tour, a sampling and a delicious meal or snack pairing. Fun guided tours for groups of up to 13 guests are available, and the bus transportation ensures every guest has a safe adventure.

Bountiful Blooms

Bowral is well-known for its natural beauty, and this includes an abundance of flora. Tulips are the most prominent flower in the region; in fact, there is even a festival dedicated to the fragrant blooms. For 2 weeks between September and October, the Tulip Festival allows visitors to marvel at over 100,000 blossoms of varying colours. The best place to see these flowers, as well as many others throughout the year, is Corbett Gardens. This public garden is one of the oldest parts in the region - dating back to the early 1900s - and offers free admission most times of the year. There are a variety of other public gardens throughout the city, all of which are ideal for exploration. Outside of spring, enjoy roses in the summer and flowering bulbs in the autumn months.

Shopping, Dining and More

In town, there is ample boutique shopping available. Whether antiques or clothing are what you are after, there is a retail establishment for you in Bowral. A number of restaurants are set throughout the downtown area, and this gives plenty of options for all price points. This area is renowned for its cuisine, so venture out and try something new during your holiday. As you walk or drive through town, keep your eyes peeled for historic structures. The International Cricket Hall of Fame and museums provide a further dose of culture, while the area's spas are perfect for relaxation. Bowral also boasts its own golf course.

Enjoy Your Time in Bowral

Bowral benefits from a seasonal climate that includes warm summers and cold winters. While cold-weather travel is not ideal for some, the amount of activity in Bowral keeps holidaymakers happy no matter the season.

Very comfortable

4 of 5
Lovely, well appointed cottage that’s perfect for a small group. Lots of little niceties provided ( eg fresh fruit, milk/cereals, coffee, toiletries etc) to make it a home away from home. Perhaps a tad too far for regular walks into town but only a couple of minutes drive to cafes, pubs, shops etc. Thoroughly recommended. Peter Canberra

Clean quiet and attractive

4 of 5
The room is tastefully decorated. The bathroom is sparkling and the bedsheets crisp and clean. It was a very cool 3 deg this morning but we didn’t feel it inside. Heater in the bathroom- towel warming rack. Heater in the bedroom and electric blankets. The room has plenty of natural northern light. Only “fault” we had was there wasn’t a little table beyond the beside tables . Definitely want to stay again.
