Visit Bribie Island: A Private Oasis for Families

While Bribie Island is set in Moreton Bay, this holiday destination is easily reached from the mainland, thanks to a long bridge. The island is surrounded by white sand beaches and measures approximately 34 kilometres in length. Much of the island is uninhabited, and this means that visitors of Bribie Island have plenty of room to spread out and enjoy their holiday. The island is a popular spot for nature lovers, water sports enthusiasts and adventurists alike. To make every visitor comfortable, there are a number of holiday house and apartment options scattered throughout the island, with some even located on the beach for maximum convenience.

Head to Pumicestone Passage

A highly popular destination for all things water, Pumicestone Passage is a highly sought after attraction. This protected marine park is one of the best for spotting various species of wildlife, such as dolphins, dugong, sea turtles and an impressive array of colourful fish. The best way to see these marine creatures, and many more, is by diving or snorkelling. Guided kayak tours are another great way to venture through the waters of the Pumicestone Passage. There are dense mangroves filled with interesting flora and fauna, as well, which makes for interesting exploration. While venturing though, keep your eyes peeled for the hundreds of species of bird that call this area home.

Explore the Various Beaches

The beaches on Bribie Island are just as varied as the people who visit them. With five main beaches plus other swimming and fishing spots, there is ample room for travellers to relax. For those who have something other than relaxing in mind, Woorim Beach is the best bet for surfing. This beach is fully patrolled and includes barbecues, playgrounds and even a skate park for boarders of another type. Dog owners appreciate Red Beach's off-leash policy for friendly dogs. Sylvan Beach is a popular destination for swimming, as is Bongaree Beach, which includes the island's ever-popular jetty. The final beach on the island is Banksia Beach, and here, guests have the option to launch a boat, fish, swim or walk with their dogs on leash.

Catch Your Own Supper

There are numerous fishing areas on Bribie Island, each of which boasts its own special species for the taking. Winter whiting can be found in the waters surrounding Red Beach and Woorim Beach, while Banksia Beach and Woorim are best known for bream. Other species fishermen are likely to hook include tailor, dart and flathead. The jetty is a beautifully scenic place from which to cast a line, as is Pumicestone Passage. Adventure seekers have the option to hire a fishing charter and fish deeper out in the sea. For seafood enthusiasts that enjoy crab, both mud and sand crabs have high populations on Bribie Island.

Inland Adventures

Land lovers need not have fear; there is plenty to do away from the coastline when visiting Bribie Island. Biking is a popular mode of transportation at this holiday destination; however, it is also a great way to explore the island at a leisurely pace. Biking paths abound, with some even stretching onto the beaches. Peruse the gift shop at the Bribie Community Arts Centre, or check the class schedule, and learn a new skill while on holiday. Not to far from the Arts Centre is Bribie Island's Bicentennial Gardens, which is a lush, beautiful area that is fully maintained by volunteers. While inland, head over to the aquatic centre, or learn about native birds in the environmental park.

Bribie Island’s Food Scene

Dining options are bountiful for those who stay on Bribie Island. Beachside eateries mix with quaint delis further inland. Many of the dining establishments on the island have takeaway menus, so picnics and quiet dinners back at the rental are always options. In addition, delicious desserts are available at various bakeries throughout Bribie Island. When visiting this holiday destination, consider spending some time at the weekly Rotary Market to pick up the necessary ingredients to prepare a meal yourself.

When to Visit Bribie Island

The weather on Bribie Island varies greatly, with summer temperatures reaching a breezy, yet balmy, 29 C and the winter seeing temperatures as low as 9 C. Even in the winter months, though, the scenery is beautiful, with the blue water, white sand and distant views of the Glass House Mountains.

Positively Perfect

5 of 5
We had a wonderful 4 nights stay at ‘Escape on Roderick’. It felt like home away from home. The house was clean and comfortable and we loved being able to use the double garage to unload our car. This house was perfect for our family of 6 and was within walking distance to everything you could possibly need.

Beautiful and refreshing

5 of 5
We stayed in this beautiful unit this Christmas period and also on four of the past five years. The aspect and views are second to none and its décor is very tastefully done. The unit has a very beautiful feel to it and the white French shuttering in the bedroom and the overhead fans throughout give a beautiful sense of tasteful and timeless charm. On Boxing Day this year the fridge packed in but to her immense credit the owner organised and had a brand new fridge ordered and fitted within 12 hours..! Have booked the unit for next year as well ..!!
