Darwin: Tropical City x Culture Hub x Adventurer’s Playground

Darwin is the only tropical capital city in Australia, set in the Northern Territory. Here, opportunities abound to get close to local wildlife, as do cultural ventures. Lovers of the great outdoors can test their nerves with a face-to-face crocodile encounter, while art connoisseurs can discover local Aboriginal galleries. Families are also well catered for in Darwin, with safe swimming areas and parks for picnics. To accommodate the large number of travellers each year, comfortable townhouses, self-contained holiday homes and apartments in the heart of the action are all available in Darwin.

Darwin’s Beaches and Lagoons

Thanks to Darwin’s hot temperatures throughout the year, there is never a bad time to get in the waters that surround town. Darwin features a number of lagoons, as well as two main beaches, Casuarina and Mindil. Casuarina Beach is part of a reserve of the same name and is surrounded by lush vegetation. Visitors beware: jellyfish populate the waters, particularly from October to May, so it is not safe to swim. Mindil Beach features rolling sand dunes, only a few minutes from Darwin’s Central Business District.

If you’re looking for a quiet place to swim with small children, head over to Wave Lagoon. Meanwhile, fishing is a favourite pastime with locals and visitors alike and Darwin is renowned for waters filled with highly sought-after barramundi. Other water-based activities in the area include sailing, canoeing and kayaking.

Darwin for Culture Buffs

There is a vibrant arts and culture community in Darwin, with a wide range of exhibits. For a great mix of art, history and entertainment, visit the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. Here, you can view Aboriginal, Southeast Asian and other international art as well as delve further into the Earth’s past with temporary exhibits. Bula’bula Arts, the Australian Aboriginal art centre, allows you to take in traditional pieces by the native Australian people. To get to know Darwin’s artists of today, visit Art Warehouse, with its forever changing shows. Pieces aren’t limited to paintings and you can also find clothing, jewellery and photograph exhibits. Audio, video, photograph and other more contemporary forms of arts can be seen throughout Darwin, as well.

Discover Darwin's Parks

Aside from being a beach and culture hub, Darwin has a lush backyard teeming with wildlife. Visit Holmes Jungle Nature Park to get a true feel for Darwin's bush. With clear paths for hikers, plenty of areas for picnics and designated spots to observe the many native birds, it is easy to spend hours exploring the reserve. For beautiful views of the city, head over to Charles Darwin National Park. This newer reserve is set on historic land that includes a number of artefacts from World War II. There are also attractive picnic areas, both cycle and walking paths, play areas and lots of wetlands. Finally, located in the city centre, Bicentennial Park has a great amount of water frontage and is home to many festivals and events throughout the year.

Action-Packed Darwin

For a once-in-a-lifetime experience with saltwater crocodiles, visit Crocosaurus Cove. This park allows you to feed the crocodiles, swim in a unique enclosure with the reptiles and enter the world-famous Cage of Death - a cage that brings you face-to-face with some of the largest crocs in the park. There is also a turtle exhibit and a huge freshwater tank that contains fish native to Australia.

If you enjoy watching a good race, head over to Hidden Valley Motor Sports Complex. During your visit, view mud racing, check out the drag strip or watch drivers go wild on the burnout pad. V8 supercars regularly race at Hidden Valley, and there are many vendors for food and souvenirs throughout the complex.

Perhaps you’d like to get your daily exercise without the thrills and chills of the above activities. If so, head to Darwin Botanical Gardens to learn about local flora and fauna. Meander through an established rainforest, take in an orchid exhibit or walk for hours along well-maintained paths.

Getting to Darwin

As a major Australian city and prime holiday destination, Darwin has its own international airport, so visitors only have a short way to their rental upon arrival. Once in town, travellers can rent a car to get around or enjoy bountiful public transport to reach all of the city’s attractions with ease.
