East Jindabyne Holidays Are a Little Different

When anyone thinks about Australian holidays, miles of golden sands and the ocean springs to mind. However, there are interior places to visit and these holidays can be diverse and exciting in both summer and winter. East Jindabyne in NSW is about two hours from Canberra, and is situated right on Lake Jindabyne. Because it is also near the mountains, many styles of holiday are available here. Of course, holiday accommodation at the lake, or accommodation in ski resorts is available but this will have to be booked in advance in high season.

Things to Do Here

Jindabyne itself, with East Jindabyne naturally being the eastern extremity, is a new town created after the original place was covered by water. This happened in the late 1960’s to form a new lake and surrounding area. The end of the lake is the site of modern day Jindabyne and is very popular because of how close it is to the Snowy Mountains ski resorts etc. However, if we start at lake level, so to speak, the first thing that people come for is the superb fishing here. Trout is the favourite catch, and there are boats for hire as well as day trips with all the equipment thrown in. Indeed, rental accommodation in fishing lodges is also available for those who live, sleep and breathe fishing.

White water rafting, for extreme sports fans, is available here or, for those who like more peaceful pursuits, walking treks, horse riding or canoeing is perhaps something a little more leisurely.

Everyone must have heard by now of ‘The Man from Snowy River’. It was inspired by this place so, for those who want to feel a touch of the wilderness, try some horseback riding in the Snowy Mountains. There is holiday accommodation on offer in some wonderful High Country Lodges, or visitors can just set out from this settlement. There is a full seven and a half thousand acres to get lost in and it joins on to Kiscinsko National Park. These guided horse treks give avid photographers the chance of a lifetime to get some great outback shots. Look out particularly for wild horses called brumbies. The sanctuary here is also home to kangaroos, the wedge tailed eagle, wallaby, emus and many native birds and flowers not seen anywhere else.

The mountains attract people from Sydney for a weekend of skiing but some people prefer to find accommodation in East Jindabyne instead of staying on the mountain. However, a visit to world famous Thredbo is a must even if it is in the summer. Winter and summer, there are always things to do in the mountains from quad biking to skiing down world class slopes.

During the school holidays, and just on the outskirts of Jindabyne, the Mt. Kosciuszko Festival takes place. Every year this has to be confirmed so, for those who are interested in visiting at this time of year, check up on it first.

Accommodation in Jindabyne

East Jindabyne holiday accommodation takes many forms. From holiday rental homes to top class luxurious accommodation, everything is available here. Ski lodges and secluded cottages are what some people like for accommodation and these are here in abundance. If this is a skiing holiday, try booking the lift passes and any other charges in a ‘bundle’ to save costs. This can all be done on the Internet when the trip is being planned and saves a lot of trouble when arriving. Likewise, book transfers or car hire before travelling so that all are paid for in advance.

The Weather

Summer in this part of the world runs from around November so, for anyone flying in from outside the country, they should take note. If it is winter holidays they want then they should aim for around July. This is excellent for visitors from the UK because it falls right in the middle of the kids’ summer holidays. Remember that winter brings a lot of snow, so pack accordingly.

How to Get There

From the UK, many long haul flights from Heathrow and Gatwick come in to Sydney, Canberra or even Melbourne. Canberra is the closest to East Jindabyne and from here it is just over two hours travel by car.

Beautiful & Functional

5 of 5
Alpine Vista was absolutely wonderful. The view was gorgeous, it had all the utensils and odds and ends that you might need, and was clean and comfortable. It was cosy; we had two people stay and I'd say that would be the maximum you could fit comfortably with the size of the lounge room and kitchen. It does feel a little close to the apartment next to it, but we never had any problems with them, it just feels like your personal space is encroached on a bit. All in all it was a lovely place to stay, and I'd stay there again in a heartbeat.
