Your Beachfront Holiday Beckons – Gerroa, New South Wales, Australia
Getting to Know Gerroa
Gerroa, New South Wales, is a great holiday destination for single holidaymakers or families traveling together. Located just 133 km south of Sydney, the town of less than 500 people welcomes naturists and water sports enthusiasts alike.
Gerroa sits on the Tasman coast, just above Seven Mile Beach. The township was originally surveyed in 1824, and became the focal point for many “firsts” for the region. The beach was used traditionally for horse racing, and this naturally led to the beach becoming an auto-racing venue. The first car to break the 100 mph barrier in Australia did so here, on Seven Mile Beach. Further, the first trans-Tasman air flight took off from the beach here, landing more than 14 hours later in New Plymouth, New Zealand (that same flight today would take about 5.5 hours). If you’re interested in seeing these historic locations, check for the availability of holiday home rentals nearby. It will take some time to see it all, so having your base of operations centrally located makes good sense.
While You’re Here
Gerroa offers something to interest all types of holidaymakers. For those more interested in nature pursuits, start off with a visit to Seven Mile Beach National Park for bird watching. You can continue this pursuit at nearby Crooked River or at Werri Lagoon.
If you find birds too small to keep your attention, go directly to the other end of the scale and hire a boat tour. There are companies in Gerroa specializing in bringing you on whale watching tours or on dolphin spotting tours. Watch as the whales migrate northward in the winter months, safe on the boat, but as close as you can be and still remain dry. Should you go out for a day trip, be sure to take a holiday home nearby the coast so that you are convenient to the docks.
Some people will prefer a more active holiday, and Gerroa has you well covered here as well. To remain connected to the sea, consider the excellent fishing opportunities available. Anglers can pull Australian salmon, Tailor, and flathead (among other species) while fishing from the beach or from the areas around Broughton Creek. For a more challenging fishing adventure, take on rock fishing from Black Head. One word of warning – watch the tides while rock fishing. Normally it is an easy walk in a set of waders, but catch the tides wrong and you’ll be chest deep on the way back!
Golfers are welcome in the area as well. Gerringong Golf Club sits between Gerringong and Gerroa, and provides 18 well-designed holes and a small clubhouse. Forgot your clubs? No worries – the clubhouse has sets for hire. If you plan to spend a lot of time on the course, consider taking a self contained holiday villa nearby to save travel time and maximize time on the links.
Still too tame? True adrenaline junkies should still come to Gerroa. Whatever your favorite pastime – surfing, hang gliding, parasailing, windsurfing, or sailing – you will find it in Gerroa. The combinations of water conditions in the area go from calm and protected areas suitable for swimming to 1 – 2m waves with great surf breaks.
Dress for the Weather
The weather in Gerroa is well suited to outdoor activities, with temperatures more moderate in summer and slightly warmer in winter than many other popular Australian resort areas. Expect to find daytime high temperatures in January and February of 25 degrees Celsius, with nighttime low temperatures of 10 – 11 degrees Celsius in June through August. If travelling in February, bring your umbrella, as this is the peak month for rain. Don’t let this stop you – select your holiday accommodation carefully, and staying indoors for a day need not be a punishment!
