Holiday rentals in Hat Head, New South Wales

Go far from the madding crowds with a trip to Hat Head, on the North Coast of New South Wales. This tiny hamlet boasts some of the most amazing scenery on Australia’s eastern seaboard and also some of the finest fishing on this most abundant of coastlines.

Completely unspoilt by development because of its isolated position on the mouth of Korongo Creek, Hat Head has built up a tourist industry around its excellent fishing facilities and, although small, can offer holiday rentals so suit all budgets.

Gone fishing

Sitting within Hat Head National Park, the village of Hat Head is around 300 miles north of Sydney. First settled by Europeans in the mid 19th century, its early industry centred on cedar cutting, farming and then fishing. Hat Head has excellent beaches that run unbroken for around 9 miles and are very popular with surfers and water sports enthusiasts, while its dunes and habitat are protected by a care scheme.

While commercial fishing has long been a mainstay of the village, today it is visitors who take advantage of the excellent fishing opportunities to try and land “the big one”. The continental shelf drops to just 70m close to the shore and charters head out into the Pacific to chase the likes of marlin.

Those who prefer to keep their feet on dry land will find terrific fishing in Korongo Creek or on the beach and rocks. What could be better than landing your own catch, then firing up the barbie at your holiday accommodation to tuck into the freshest of fish?

Typically of resorts on the Pacific Coast, Hat Head also enjoys a fabulous view of the whales and dolphins that cross these waters on their way to their breeding grounds. Climb to the top of Hat Hill and take in the most panoramic of views of this beautiful coast. The Hat Head Trig Marathon takes place every Boxing Day when intrepid runners brave the heat to race up the 164m hill.

Park life

Head for Hat Head National Park to explore its headlands, coastal heaths and one of New South Wales’s largest dune systems. The park also has rainforests, wetlands and wildflower displays. An unmissable attraction is the Cave, a dramatic rock formation that can be explored at low tide. Or head for Smoky Cape lighthouse for a guided tour.

Hat Head’s beaches include Gap Beach and Third Beach – take a stroll along the headlands here for magnificent views across the National Park and out to the ocean.

About an hour’s drive south of Hat Head is Port Macquarie, one of the top resorts on the North Coast. As well as some amazing beaches and water sports, Port Macquarie has fine shopping facilities and even a Koala Hospital where these injured creatures are treated.

The Port Macquarie area is also known for its wineries and open cellar door tours can be arranged for those keen to sample the best locally produced wine.

Ray of light

The North Coast of New South Wales has a subtropical climate, which that means hot summers with occasional rainfall. Spring is warm while winter is cool and dry. Average daily temperatures are around 30?C during the summer months of January, February and March, and visitors unused to those kinds of temperatures should take great care to use plenty of sunscreen as coastal breezes can mask how warm it is. Its excellent fishing grounds mean that Hat Head is a terrific all-year-round destination and its holiday rentals are also available all year round.

Getting there

Sydney’s Kingsford Smith Airport is the gateway for UK visitors heading towards Australia’s eastern seaboard. There are connecting flights to Newcastle, which is around two hours’ drive south of Hat Head but the ideal way to reach your destination is by car and rental can be organised when you’re booking your holiday accommodation. There are also regular coach services from Sydney that service the east coast resorts.

beautiful

We loved this house. Truly, it is like the something from the pages of a design magazine. Now for the good and the less good: Good The house has windows on all sides so it's light bright and has the most amazing views across the forest to the ocean. The bed was very comfortable, the freestanding bath in the ensuite has an incredible view, all the windows were screened from bugs, (which is a deal breaker in the forest) and wildlife abounds. The open fire is romantic, the kitchen well appointed with a great coffee machine and all the gadgets you'll need. Less Good The plot next door is being developed, so when the builders are present it is quite noisy. Check for latest developments on that front. The windows have vast metal venetian style blinds on the outside, which are at present broken and fixed in the down position. You can see, but the amazing view is obscured. We spend most of the time out on the fabulous balcony for this reason. The drive way is incredibly steep, but that is how you get the amazing view. The fire is romantic, but it is quite smoky. Overall: Highly recommended. We spent two weeks and could have spent two months.
