Exploring the Fleurieu Peninsula – Hayborough, South Australia
First, the Basics:
Hayborough, South Australia is one of the many outstanding holiday destinations spread across the Fleurieu Peninsula. This suburb of slightly larger Victor Harbor boasts a year round population of just fewer than 2000 souls and is ready to receive visitors in every season.
The area was settled in 1854, when the railway lines connecting Victor Harbor to the port at Goolwa were laid. Initially, the local population of Southern Right Whales was exploited as the main industry for Victor Harbor, but in the mid-1860’s, it became apparent that freight hauling on the Murray River was both easier and more profitable. As ships became larger, the older river port at Goolwa became less capable, and so Victor Harbor and its environs, including Hayborough, grew up. Nowadays, Victor Harbor’s main industry is tourism. Commercial fishing is still an active industry here, and the maritime history that permeates the region can be seen everywhere.
While You’re Here:
Hayborough is first and foremost a beach resort. Restaurants, pubs, and plentiful rental accommodation are available near the beach, leaving you close to all of the venues for your activities of choice. There’s excellent swimming at Horseshoe Bay nearby, sheltered from the larger waves of the main beach. Surfers can catch decent breaks just offshore, while fishermen can enjoy surf, rock, or boat fishing. If sun, sand, and sea are the main points for your holiday, be sure to book your rental home or villa early to ensure getting the best choice of location.
After spending the morning on the beach, take a ride on the Steam Ranger Heritage Railway’s Cockle Train. The trains run on the oldest steel-rail railway in Australia, and go from Victor Harbor to Goolwa. In the early days, residents of Victor Harbor and Hayborough would take a horse-drawn train on this same route to collect cockles at Goolwa, hence the name. In modern times, this is an excellent way to see the scenic coastlines and consider days gone by.
If you still haven’t had enough fun, take the team to Dunes Mini Golf. 18 holes of marine-themed enjoyment await your pleasure. For the average golfer, 30 to 45 minutes is enough to complete the course, but don’t rush. Enjoy your game!
At some point during your holiday, it would be nice to indulge in some actual relaxation. Let the helpful staff of The Joyful Buddhas Health & Wellbeing Studio assist in working out all the knots and feeling refreshed. The spa offers yoga, massage, reflexology therapy, Pilates training, and much more. Spend some “you” time and come away feeling refreshed and renewed.
Don’t leave town without stopping by the Old El Shaneo microbrewery. Sample as many of their locally crafted masterpieces as you can. Up to 19 different varieties are on offer at any time, and you’ll have found a favorite by the time you head back to your Hayborough holiday accommodation.
While Hayborough and Victor Harbor are not really large cities, it still pays to do your homework regarding the location of your holiday rental. Finding a centralized location means less time in transit, and more time in your swimsuit!
What Should You Wear?
As Hayborough is just over an hour south of Adelaide, the climate is much the same. Expect higher temperatures from December to February, with warm days of 26 to 28 degrees Celsius and gentle nights of 14 to 16 degrees. If you visit from June to August, you’ll find the coolest temperatures of the year. Daytime highs will average 16 degrees, with nights cooling to about 7 degrees. Rainfall is moderate all year and temperatures are never too extreme, so Hayborough is a safe bet all year for an enjoyable holiday.
Making the Trip
Before you plan your flights, plan your lodgings. It is very important to book holiday rental homes early to avoid any disappointment in missing your preferred locations. Once that’s done, actually planning the trip is quite easy. Whether you’re flying out of London City Airport, Stansted, Gatwick, or Heathrow, all the major carriers have scheduled multiple daily departures to Adelaide. On arrival in Adelaide, there is frequent and regular coach service to Victor Harbor, but the best bet is to hire a car at the airport. You can reach Hayborough in about one hour fifteen minutes, due south from the airport.
Enjoy your stay!
