Nestled in the Illawarra area of New South Wales, Kiama Downs is a small coastal town in the neighborhood of Kiama, about half hour from Wollongong. Tucked in between the Minnamurra River and Boyds Beach, Kiama Downs is well known for its gorgeous beaches and its resplendent coastal views.
A popular holiday town, there are plenty of holiday homes, glorious holiday villas and holiday cottages along the shoreline, far away from any bright city lights. Most is happening in Wollongong, a dynamic city known for their fabulous botanical gardens, awesome surfing spots and even one of the biggest Buddhist temples not seen anywhere else in the southern hemisphere.
Most holidaymakers head for Kiama Downs for the beach. The main stretch is known as Jones Beach and like every good beach in Australia is home to a surf and lifesaving club that is a big part of the local community. As with all such clubs, non-members are greeted with warmth and hospitality both out on the sands and at the various events and competitions they host throughout the year.
Puckey’s Estate Reserve is a natural coastal reserve that was traditionally used by an Aboriginal tribe called the Wadi Wadi. Now more of a recreation area for both locals and visitors to the area, it is a fascinating journey through history and nature. You can cycle the Squires Way route, check out the historic site of the experimental salt works that was owned and run by Courtney Puckey, or just grab a picnic and enjoy a day with the family in the outdoors.
The Nan Tien Temple is not only the biggest temple in the entire southern hemisphere, it is also the place where you can book your most unique holiday accommodation. Right on the grounds of this regal and mystical temple, you will be able to book into a holiday cottage that overlooks the magical lotus pond, the ancient gardens and the stunning temple. The fascinating and mysterious temple showcases some of the best examples of Buddhist architecture, culture and art. Classes and Buddhist festivals are held here right throughout the year.
Lake Illawarra is a very popular spot among both locals and holiday makers who come down to the lake to book holiday rentals and spend their holiday with their families. With more than 13 ramps along the shores of the lake for launching boats, it is hugely popular among those who enjoy to fish and go prawning. All the water sports you can think of are also enjoyed here, jet skis, water skiing, wake boarding, wind surfing and swimming. For those that came on holiday without a boat, don’t worry, you can hire one for the duration of your stay, you can even hire a catamaran and take the family out into the bay.

British visitors first have to fly to Sydney International airport – about 90 minutes away. Then there’s the option to take a connecting flight to the nearest airport servicing the Kiama Downs area, Illawarra Regional Aiport, which is just 11 km out of the town. When visitors land here, you can pick up their rental car from the rental agency at the airport and head right down to their picturesque holiday cottage right on the beach. Of course, there’s also the idea of ignoring the connecting flight and simply hiring the car at Sydney for the onward drive to Kiama Downs.
