Discover the Undiscovered – Explore Loch Sport, Victoria

Getting to Know Loch Sport

Loch Sport, Victoria, is ideally placed to introduce you to all that the Gippsland Lakes area has to offer. Formerly known only as “The Narrows”, Loch Sport is perched on a thin strip of land sandwiched between the Gippsland Lakes (Lake King, Lake Wellington, and Lake Victoria) and Lake Reeve, and near 90 Mile Beach. Thousands of years ago, this area was home to aboriginal tribes, and their leavings can still occasionally be found today. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, this was livestock country, but Loch Sport didn’t come into real popularity until the 1950’s when the area’s potential for water sport related tourism was realized.

Loch Sport is normally a quiet town, with a permanent population of less than 1000 people. But in peak seasons (around Easter time and Christmas, coinciding with school holidays), the Loch Sport holiday accommodations fill with holidaymakers, and the population swells to more than 4000. Of course, tourism is very important to the local economy.

We Promise – You Won’t Be Bored!

The natural environment of the Loch Sport area provides opportunities for many outdoor activities for the entire family.

Invite your golfing mates out for 18 holes at the Loch Sport Golf Club. The 72-par course runs for 5610 meters overall, and contains 15 well-placed bunkers for challenging play. Don’t be surprised to see some local wildlife during your game, as the course is adjacent to a national park. If the golf course is the center of your vacation, holiday rental homes are available nearby to minimize the time spent driving the car, and maximize time on the driving range.

Birdwatchers will be at home in Loch Sport as well. BirdLife International has named this region an IBA – Important Bird Area because it is home to many rare or endangered species. Some species are here full time, and others are migratory. Additional opportunities for wildlife observation can be found at The Lakes National Park nearby. The 5000-acre preserve is home to koalas, kangaroos, wombats, wallabies, echidnas, and emus, among other native species. Be forewarned, though, that the region is also home to legendary salt marsh mosquitos, so bring the citronella along for the trip! If you want to bring your own animal along from home for your holiday, some local holiday rentals are dog friendly. Either way, animal lovers can find their pet-friendly holiday home near prime locations for bird watching and photo-safari.

And don’t forget about the lakes. The Gippsland Lakes and Lake Reeve are outstanding boating and swimming destinations. The swimming here is safer than on the beaches, as the strong offshore tides are not a problem. Infrastructure has been put in place over the years to keep water levels stable and calm. Anglers will find many species of fish available. Black Bream is the primary species, with good catches available from boats, but also from jetties or from the riverbanks of the Tambo, Nicholson, and Mitchell rivers feeding into the lake system. Fishermen in this area can also snag salmon, mullet, flathead, tailor, snapper, and gummy shark. Holiday accommodation along the waterfront or near the fishing hotspots of the rivers will be easy to find, but book early before the best locations are taken. With a huge influx of holidaymakers at Easter and Christmas, peak season is predictable, so plan accordingly.

As the Seasons Change…

…you will want to be prepared for the weather. With such natural splendor all around, the Loch Sport area will always be visually pleasing. But how does the weather compare to home in the UK?

Warm days are plentiful in Loch Sport’s summer season, driving the holidaymakers to quickly snap up holiday rental homes near the beaches and along the lakeshores. Daytime highs average 23.5 to 25.5 degrees Celsius in the December to February time frame. If you are planning to visit Loch Sport during the Easter break, expect temperatures in the daytime to run in the low 20’s, and nighttime lows around 10 degrees Celsius. Travelers who visit Loch Sport in the June to August period will find nighttime temperatures dipping into the 3.5 – 4.5 degrees Celsius range, so pack warmer clothing. Be sure that your choice of holiday home provides adequate heating for these temperatures.

The Journey Begins...

…with planning where to stay. Given that the Loch Sport area fills up quickly at peak seasons, it is important to book your holiday rental home or villa as soon as possible. After this critical detail is addressed, then book your flight. All major carriers offer multiple departures daily from London to Melbourne. You will easily find flights departing from all London airports, including Stansted, Gatwick, London City, and Heathrow.

After your arrival in Melbourne, you have three choices.

1. Take the train. Rail service runs from Melbourne to Sale, Victoria. After your arrival in Sale, hire a car and take a leisurely 45-minute drive along the coast to Loch Sport.

2. Take the bus. Route is same as above, Melbourne to Sale and Sale to Loch Sport. Expect this option to take more time.

3. Hire a car directly at Melbourne. For those who prefer to be in control of their own schedules, this is the best recommendation. Driving time from the airport to your holiday home away from home in Loch Sport is about 3.5 hours total.

Now all the work is done. Loch Sport holiday rental booked, transport arranged, and a neighbor has agreed to water your plants while you’re away. Nothing left to do now but get to Loch Sport and enjoy your holiday. Have fun!

Quiet family getaway

5 of 5
We stayed for three days as a quiet getaway. The town and accommodation delivered in spades. Surf/fishing beach is a few minutes away. Lake/fishing beach is a walk away. National park is a short drive away. Animals invade the town at night. Such a unique place to visit and I'd thoroughly recommend it if you want to get away from the more traditional Lakes Entrance type holiday. Accommodation was exceptional. A large two-storey house with plenty of room, excellent amenities and a great location. Only improvement would be wifi but that's the point of a getaway sometimes (with apologies to the teenagers in the house). Couldn't fault the location or accommodation. If you're wanting a hustle bustle type holiday with a million things to do and a large bustling population, then is is NOT for you. If you want a quiet getaway amongst the gum trees, a kookaburra and kangaroo or two and a surf beach out the back, a verandah out the front and an old rocking chair ..... don't hestitate and book. We will be back.
