Middleton is a quaint coastal holiday destination located approximately 90km south of Adelaide, on the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia. According to the last Australian census Middleton is home to only 818 people however, during the tourist season this number swells with international holiday makers vying for their little piece of paradise, in the form of a beachside villa or holiday home.
Middleton never fails to deliver when it comes to things to see and do, especially for holiday makers who love the beach. Middleton Point offers great surfing year round, as well as a school for aspiring surfers. The greatest thing about this surf break however, is that holiday makers in Middleton only have to pick up their board and walk out of their holiday accommodation to hit the waves.
Middleton also gives international travellers the opportunity to try their hand at deep water fishing, with various local charter companies promising visitors the catch of a lifetime. Those do-it-yourself types however, also have the option of renting a boat and setting off in search of their own secret fishing spot, or just throwing a line in off the beach to see what’s biting. No matter which option holiday makers choose, it’s likely that there’ll be a fish on the barbeque of their holiday rental at some point during their stay.
Travellers with younger children are unlikely to get too much surfing or fishing in during their stay, but not to worry, the Greenhills Adventure Park is located a mere 10km west of Middleton. This park offers something for all ages including: water slides, mini golf, petrol go karts, water slides, 4-wheeler motorbikes and much more. Holiday makers that have children are guaranteed to have them worn out and asleep before they arrive back at their holiday home, allowing for a relaxing evening on the veranda watching the ocean.
One of the other great opportunities afforded to international visitors staying in Middleton is the chance to get back to nature. Hindmarsh Island, located approximately 17km east of Middleton, borders directly on the beautiful Coorong National Park, which is made up of a succession of salt water lagoons bordered by sweeping sand dunes.
Holiday makers can choose from a number of different tours through the national park ranging from kayak tours to full day cruises, one of which offers the opportunity to visit a traditional working cattle station on neighbouring Mundoo Island. Travellers that fall in love with the idea of becoming a ‘Jackaroo’ or ‘Jillaroo’ on a cattle station may like to check out the accommodation options on the island.
Holiday makers looking for something more daring, have the option of renting a four wheel drive and journeying the 165km around Lake Alexandrina to see Coorong National Park from the dusty bush roads that snake through the area. This National Park unlike most others in Australia allows visitors to drive directly on the beach and dunes, which means that holiday makers will experience something that many Australians have never had the chance to do.
Whilst travellers are off the beaten track they also have the opportunity to search the park for some of the extensive aboriginal historical sites, which are said to exist. Although nothing that visitor find can be removed from the park, holiday makers are guaranteed to return to their holiday rental with a camera full of amazing photos and some great stories, to take home.
Middleton experiences what is known as a Mediterranean climate, which generally means mild damp winters and warm dry summers. The ideal time to visit however generally depends upon the visitors interests. Beachgoers in Middleton generally prefer the summer months, which span from December to February, as this period presents perfect warm sunny beach days. Travellers interested in whale watching in comparison may like to visit the region during the winter. Holiday makers who have no particular preference can instead take advantage of the great ‘off-season’ holiday deals, and enjoy cheap luxury accommodation and less crowded beaches during Autumn or Spring.
Several airlines such as Qantas, British Airways and Lufthansa offer flights to Adelaide departing from London City Airport, with various colorful stopovers often incorporated. From Adelaide holiday makers have a short 90km drive or bus trip through the beautiful South Australian countryside, before they finally arrive at their luxury beachside holiday rental and can begin their Australian adventure.
