Things to See and Do
The sleepy town of Mossy Point is an excellent destination to kick back and relax and become one with your surroundings. Without the hustle and bustle of the bright city lights and so much to do outdoors, you and your family will really be able to relax and chill out. If you can tear yourself away from your book, while lazing on the deck in the sun at your holiday rental, there are few must sees and must do’s in and around Mossy Point.
Novice or beginner surfers will find the waves all the way from Mossy Point to Tomakin just perfect for those finding their surfing feet, and getting to know their boards and the water. For those intrepid surfers who are after a bit more of a thrill and a rush, you can head down to the legendary surf spot at Pink Rocks, a little out of the way on the other side of Broulee Island, to the north, which offers massive 6 feet waves for the serious surfers. Definitely not a spot for beginners as, if you are not sure of yourself, it can become a hazardous adventure.
Broulee Island Walks
Declared a protected natural reserve by the National Parks and Wildlife Board, Broulee Island is a nature lover’s paradise. Easily accessible by the permanent sandbar that joins the island to the mainland of Broulee, the walks on Broulee island make for a great day trip out of Mossy Point and a great way to get kids out of the holiday accommodation. Sparkling natural rock pools, stunning ocean vistas and an abundance of natural scrub and native bush, such as red olive plum and lilli pilli, can be seen all around you on your hike. An amazing collection of marine birds such as the fairy wren and white bellied sea eagle can be seen here. If you are visiting in summer, you will be able to see whales in the bay from your vantage point on the walk.
All along the coastal area of Mossy Point running all the way to Candlagan Creek has some of the best fishing spots along the coast. Scenic rock pools, calm waters, safe play pools that fill up from the sea are all calm and protected, and a wonderful place for families to spend time together. Kids can throw out hand lines for fishing, and there are plenty of spots and opportunities for the more serious fisherman to get out there, to catch loads of whiting. Further along between Mossy Point and Tomakin, boats can be launched for fishing and charters can be organised with a local boat hire company. You can fish for flathead, reef fish, blue swimmer crabs and even prawns during the season, if you go closer to the river mouth, and of course plenty of whiting.
If you are an avid snorkeler or diver, you won’t be disappointed on holiday in Mossy Point. If you didn’t bring any equipment or diving gear with you, find out from your holiday accommodation about diving and snorkelling schools that will be able to hire out everything you will need and even take you on a diving excursion. Must visit is Black Rock, the Bubble Cave and the Arch, where you can dive through underwater tunnels and caves.
The summer rainfall area of this beautiful part of the coast, brings a moderate climate to Mossy Point. The summer months run from October to April, bringing warm weather, perfect for those balmy evening barbeques on the deck of your holiday house. Temperatures average at around 27 C during the day in summer, dropping to 19 C at night.
The dry winter months are cool, the coldest month being July, where the average temperature is about 16 C during the day dropping down to 10 C at night. Mossy Point is the perfect all year round holiday destination, the only deciding factor is what time of year you want to book your holiday accommodation, as the region will be busier over school holidays.
Getting there from the UK
Out of the two airports in the area, the closest one to Mossy Point is Moruya Airport which has connecting flights from Sydney and Canberra. Canberra is closest at 66 miles making it a reasonable drive. It is a good idea to prebook your car rental so that you don’ have to waste precious time fiddling about at the airport, when you could be at your holiday villa already. Pick up your car and drive the short distance, about 8km to Mossy Point.
