A Perfect Beach Holiday In North Avoca, Australia

Just about fifty miles from Sydney is a lovely beach resort called North Avoca. This is a prime spot for surfing and other water sports which attracts the rich folk of Sydney. In fact, if an up-market getaway is on the cards, with the attendant holiday accommodation to match, this is the place to be. This is a residential area, which includes The Entrance, MacMaster Beach and North Avoca Beach.

North Avoca Beach is between two rocky headlands with higher surf at one end than the other. This means that those with differing skill sets can enjoy a holiday together. There is fishing in abundance too and swimming and snorkelling for those who love marine life. Behind the beach is Avoca Lake and this is a cool place for picnics and less frenetic sports. Not far away is Cockrone Lagoon and MacMasters Beach which families love to flock to.

For those who want to get a view of the surrounding areas, Captain Cook Lookout has excellent views all along the beach and beyond. Just follow the beach road up to First point which was mentioned by Captain Cook in his chronicles.

What to Do Here

Since the land here was originally occupied by indigenous Australians, expect to see artefacts from the Awabakel Aborigines. White settlers took over in 1830, when it got its name. In fact, North Avoca means ‘great estuary’ or ‘where the river meets the sea’.

At The Entrance (beach), a visit to see the daily pelican feeding is a must. Although this was started on the off chance, it now forms an integral part of life here to the point where a special platform has been built. Sick pelicans are plucked when they come to feed and taken for treatment nearby. This is free but visitors are asked to make a donation to provide for the fish, treatments and purchase of equipment that the volunteers need.

Somersby Falls is another great place to visit and is just a short way into the hinterland. Here, not only have a hike along the creek to see the falls, but also have a go at kite flying as well. Indeed, this place offers so much, including different styles of holiday accommodation, that a wedding or other such event could be held here. It is also just one hour from the Hunter Valley so this may be a good stop off point before getting back to the beach life.

Also near North Avoca accommodation is the Mangrove Creek Dam, about thirty minutes from Gosford. There are great photo opportunities here because the dam wall stands an impressive eighty metres high. Serving the areas of Gosford and Wyong, this is a lovely place for a family picnic away from the hustle and bustle of the beach.

If taking a trip into the hinterland, try out areas like the Watagan State Forest and Mountains or the Dooralong and Yarramalong Valleys. Or, for the unadventurous, stay in Somersby and see the Australian Reptile Park and Sanctuary. Indeed, this place draws many visitors every year. Those who want that extra experience will find the Macadamia Nut Farm at Yarramalong, the paintball games are Kulnara and many other great things to see and do here.

Where to Stay

Since this area is so diverse, finding holiday rental accommodation in North Avoca or its surrounding areas is not hard to do. Rented accommodation in the form of serviced apartments, holiday homes or up-market five star hotels are dotted all along the coastline as well as further inland. Backpackers and campers are catered for as well so everyone is welcome in this lovely part of the world.

When to Visit

October to March sees the best temperatures which average at a very comfortable 25C. It does get cooler at night but not like the UK for sure! However, May to October sees the coolest night time temperatures so if visiting at this time, bring some light but warm clothing. August to December is the driest time of the year so if rain is not on the menu, a Christmas holiday is perfect.

How to Get There

Flying into Sydney from Heathrow in the UK can be done on many of the national carriers that ply this route. A hire car is advisable since it will take around one hour to reach North Avoca and then the whole area can be explored. Or, for those who are nervous, get transfers from Sydney and hire a car later on. All this can be booked online, as well as a holiday home in North Avoca, when planning the trip.

Fabulous!

A lovely property, impeccably maintained, with everything needed for a great break. Short and comfortable walk to all that Terrigal has to offer, but in a serene residential location that allowed us to retreat and relax in a peaceful environment.
