The small port of Wallaroo is located to the west of the Yorke Peninsula, just over an hour’s drive from the city of Adelaide. With an historic background with the copper triangle being the hub for the copper mining industry way back when in the 1800’s, the small area of North Beach is now a quaint holiday spot. Many city folk from Adelaide have holiday homes, holiday cottages and holiday accommodation all along the Copper Coast and the region sees many holiday makers throughout the year.
This lighthouse was the second lighthouse to be built on the coast of South Australia and the first one of its kind in the country to be constructed completely of cast iron. This historic landmark was erected after the ship known as Marion, ran aground on Marion Reef, as it was so named shortly afterwards, and the government decided that a lighthouse should be built. These days the original lighthouse keeper’s cottage is now a holiday rental and visitors can book the historic holiday accommodation from Innes National Park.
The Innes National Park is one of the biggest attractions along the Yorke Peninsula. Opened in the 70’s to take advantage of the discovery of the mysterious Western Whipbird in the late 1960’s, the massive park stretches over 9200ha of natural bush and scrub, making a bird watchers paradise.
Seeped in history surrounding the mystery and nostalgia of the Copper Coast heyday, the Moonta Mines Museum is located in the area of the former Moonta Mines Model School. Although it closed its doors in the 1960’s it served the community of the Moonta Mines for almost 100 years.
The museum showcases the journey and the lives and times of the Cornish miners who arrived along the coast of Southern Australia in the 1800’s. A trip to the museum is a fascinating journey through the lives of the workers and their families, with extensive artefacts and memorabilia during the time that the area was mined.
North Beach has a fantastic lifestyle and many of the locals have their own boats as fishing is hugely popular in the area. If you would like to charter a fishing vessel, check out for the information in your holiday accommodation so that you can enjoy a day out on the water.
But if the open sea is not your cup of tea, then the fantastic jetty on the beach is very popular among locals and visitors alike, who come down to the seafront to catch their share of crabs, squid and whiting. Nothing like fresh seafood on the BBQ on a warm summer’s evening at your holiday home in North Beach.
The dry Mediterranean climate of North Beach makes a winter rainfall area that brings hot summer days and moderate winter months. The summer months run from October to April, with daytime temperatures climbing into the high 30C mark and dropping to a sublime evening temperature of 23C for those perfect summer evenings at your holiday home.
The winter months are pleasant with a little rain, the most falling in June. The average temperature in the winter is 19C during the day, going down to a cool 8C at night.
North Beach is a perfect year round destination, although those visitors who may struggle with the heat, which can get intense during the months of January and February, would more than likely prefer to visit in the month of April when it has cooled down a little bit.
Visitors traveling to North Beach will arrive in the city of Adelaide at the International Airport. It is recommended that you plan ahead and book your car rental in advance when you book your air tickets, so that you don’t waste time at the airport and you can get going straight away to your holiday home in North Beach. Pick up your rental car and take a slow drive and enjoy the scenery on your way to your holiday rental; the 160km drive should take just over an hour and a half to get there.
