Picnic Bay is located on Magnetic Island, offshore from Townsville in Queensland. The name Picnic Bay refers both to the bay and to the main town on the island. Magnetic Island is also home to the stunning, scenic Magnetic Island National Park. If you’re looking for a holiday rental on your own quiet stretch of beach, check out Picnic Bay.

Why Picnic Bay?

Travellers choose Picnic Bay accommodation for its quiet location near the bigger city of Townsville. People are also drawn to this area for its close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef. In Picnic Bay, the beaches are flanked by trees that provide lots of natural shade. Here you can relax on the beach or take a stroll out onto the Picnic Bay jetty, a former ferry terminal, for an afternoon of fishing.

What To See And Do?

Picnic Bay is one part of Magnetic Island that is home to a big national park. The island is surrounded for coral reefs that provide excellent snorkeling and scuba diving tours. It is also possible to do some hiking along the island’s network of trails to encounter local wildlife including koala bears and a variety of species of birds.

Some visitors might be surprised to learn on an island that has so much national park land that there is also a great golf course. Bring your clubs along and play a round of 18 at the Island Golf Course, known for its excellent views. There is also a lovely esplanade along the water in Picnic Bay for sunset strolls and bike rides.

After a few days spent lounging on the beach, visitors might be interested in planning a daytrip to Townsville. One particularly good time to visit is during the annual Australian Festival of Chamber Music in July. Other areas of interest include Palmer Street in South Townsville known for its restaurants and nightlife.

Top Local Attractions

After a day on the beach or snorkeling in Picnic Bay, you don’t have to go to the mainland for entertainment. The town of Picnic Bay is home to an open air shopping complex and the Picnic Bay Mall.

Another big local attraction is located just offshore. During low tide, the wreckage of George Rennie is visible. If you’ve always wanted to go snorkeling around a shipwreck, you can do so off the coast of Picnic Bay. The Picnic Bay Jetty is another popular local attraction where you can watch the sunset or try your luck at some fishing.

Why Rentals?

Travellers choose Picnic Bay holiday rentals for spacious, private accommodation. While there are several choices for Townsville accommodation, choices in Picnic Bay are attractive for their lush surroundings, outdoor living space, and bay views. Settle in to the comforts and conveniences of an island rental including a stocked kitchen and laundry facilities. For a family adventure or a romantic getaway, Picnic Bay rentals are the perfect choice.

                                                              Absolutely fantastic!

The property itself was quite quaint, peaceful and close to all that we wanted. It would suit a single/couple as it is fully self-contained and has everything you need. It is close to the Picnic Bay hotel (excellent meals), the jetty (good fishing) and the local bus stop. The local people were very informative with anything that was asked of them and the hotel staff went out of there way for us without being asked. The property was clean, tidy and well set out. They are very private A-frames due to the palms at the front and sides. The fan and air-conditioning is a welcome asset, although we enjoy the warmer weather. The animals surrounding the property seem to add to its appeal. We saw a baby echidna, several Stone-Bush Curley's, a small wallaby, three Brush tail Possums and a pair of Brown Honey-eaters nesting in front along with the varied species calling and residing all around. The reef surrounding Picnic Bay was absolutely fantastic for snorkelling, especially at low tide. The water was 'Murky' due to an Algal Bloom that happens every year at this time for approximately six weeks, but we still enjoyed its brilliant colours and life. We took a trip with 'Aquascene' snorkelling and fishing tours. The professional service offered from Adam was excellent and I would quite happily take another tour without hesitation. All in all, I would quite happily recommend this property to anyone without hesitation. Our stay there was wonderful and we will return again. The property managers were brilliant and I am very happy with their service. Nature Pete.
