Plenty to Do in Portland

Portland, situated in Victoria, Australia, is one of the first settlements on this great continent. This then means that its history goes way back to the time that people came to set up home. Because of this, the place still has more than two hundred buildings dating back to those times, the nineteenth century, when fishermen took shelter here from the violent storms off shore. Having a natural deep water harbour also helped those with sailing vessels that had a deep draught.

Getting Started

Along the seafront, visitors can really experience the history of the place. There are odd exhibits like sea creature skeletons and all things maritime. There is a lifeboat from the mid nineteenth century to look at and, along with many other attractions, people like the interactive aspect to some of the exhibits.

Within the city visitors can find all forms of information readily available. Of course, the first thing that holidaymakers want to find out is where the best accommodation in Portland is to be found and what attractions are open etc. There is a purpose built tourism centre here so all questions can be answered quite easily.

Along the seafront, fishing fleets call in regularly to dispense their catch. Even ships which are bringing goods from all over the world anchor here and pick up local produce to take out. When it is winter time, and this term is used very loosely since it never really gets that cold, whales can be seen moving along the channel. With all this going on, it is a great idea to find a good vantage point and just sit and watch the happenings around and within this extremely busy port.

Things to Do

Hikers who find holiday accommodation nearby often want to try out the South West walk which starts and ends in Portland. There is more than one hundred and fifty miles of paths and trails that suit just about every level of fitness. Along the route, campers bring their own accommodation in the form of tents. Most people comment on the diversity of scenery that they can pass through; lush valleys, rivers and forests along with the mountains as a backdrop. The ocean can be seen through the trees at many points too so this walk really has it all.

Portland is renowned in particular for its trams that run on cables. Just taking a trip around and through the city will show the visitor what they can expect from the place. The botanical gardens, a WW11 tower and the Maritime Discovery Centre are also great places to visit.

For those who are culture vultures, so to speak, finding a Portland holiday home right at the centre of the city may be just the thing. Surrounding most hotels and rental apartments, visitors can find art galleries with displays of pottery, sculptures and paintings et al. Musicians tend to gather here as well so there is plenty to see and do apart from just swimming and water pursuits. Drop into the Art Centre and watch these artisans at work for another few interesting hours.

For water lovers, Portland offers a huge array of sea-based pursuits. Family beaches which are safe for children are available here with surf beaches for the energetic. All kinds of boat trips for those who prefer deep sea pursuits are on offer and, within the same area, find the Mount Richmond National Park which has a plethora of flora and fauna to inspect.

Accommodation in the area ranges from first class hotels to serviced apartments and all kinds of holiday homes for rent. There are camping sites and caravan parks for those on a tighter budget and further accommodation in the form of motels along the highway.

When to go to Portland

Winter time in Australia is the exact opposite to the UK but temperatures here are much higher than Britons are used to. Therefore, if whales are on the menu, go to Portland any time after June to stand a chance of seeing these magnificent creatures pass by.

Getting There and When to Go

Flights out of the UK are usually from Heathrow and there are many carriers now that include Melbourne and Adelaide as destination points. From here it is an easy ride along the interstate to the chosen accommodation in Portland which can be booked up in advance from home. Transfers can be arranged too and all these details will be found online. Even some tours and trips can be paid for in advance and this certainly makes life a lot easier when visiting this lovely city by the sea.

An absolutely stunning property with all the mod cons and very tidy. Amazing views as well as being extremely comfortable even when accommodating 8 people, close to town with out the hustle and bustle...
