A Holiday that Has It All – Scarness, Queensland, Australia

Sometimes you’re ready for a holiday, but you aren’t up for “roughing it” in the middle of nowhere. What about making your holidays in a place where conveniences abound, but where solitude, should you need some, is easy to find nearby? If this sounds like your cup of tea, consider a visit to Scarness, Queensland, Australia.

Scarness was originally its own town, and to this day boasts a population of more than 3300 in Scarness proper. However, the growth of the much larger town of Hervey Bay nearby has incorporated Scarness into a semi-metropolitan area with a population of about 63,000 souls. Scarness itself remains as a separate entity, directly on the beautiful Queensland coast. Selecting your holiday rental home in Scarness means that you’re capturing a prime spot in the Hervey Bay area.

While You’re There…

Scarness offers enough activity to keep you busy for your entire stay, if you so desire. A perennial favorite is whale watching from the beach or from onboard a tour ship. Each year, humpback whales frequent the waters off Scarness from April through October. The calm waters here are a favorite social and calving area for the magnificent beasts, and sightings are frequent. Up to 7000 whales will stop by during their annual migration. The most fortunate holidaymakers in Scarness will choose rental accommodations that let them see whales without leaving the sitting room!

Whales are not the only fans of the coastal waters here. Water sports are an integral part of any Australian holiday, and bathers in particular are favored here. Tides and surf tend to be calm, and the water temperatures are friendly.

Should you need a little more adrenaline in your spectator sports, check out the Hervey Bay Bombers. The Australian Rules Football team is a regional powerhouse and has won the AFL Wide Bay Championship 13 times since 1987. You’ll quickly become a fan.

Nearby Fraser Island is a treasure trove waiting to be found as well. Only an hour from Scarness’ comfortable rental homes, Fraser Island is the world’s largest sand island. Because of its separation from the mainland, many species of flora and fauna are found here that have been adapted or even eliminated on the mainland. Keep in mind that domestic dogs are not allowed on Fraser Island, in order to protect the native dingo population from diseases or from introduction of cross-breeding. While fishing in the freshwater creeks and lakes on Fraser Island is not permitted, anglers will find a good catch waiting just off the coastline. Tailor, jewfish, golden trevally, whiting, flathead, and surf bream are all frequently found here.

And Now, the Weather

Visitors to Scarness will find temperate climes. December through February are the warmest months. Daytime high temperatures will average 30 degrees Celsius, with nights dropping to a sleep-friendly 22 degrees Celsius. Open the windows of your holiday home and sleep soundly. Should you visit in June through August, you’re in for daytime highs of 21 to 22 degrees, with nights at a crisper 10 to 11 degrees Celsius. Rainfall is relatively even throughout the year, enabling you to enjoy the natural scenery at any time.

Tips on Arrival

Holidaymakers headed for Scarness have a wide array of options on making the trip. Of course, a first priority is booking your rental accommodation. Scarness proper is not so large, so the best spots will book full early. Once this is addressed, then book your flights from any of the London area airports to Brisbane.

• Connecting flights from Brisbane (BNE) to Hervey Bay (HVB) are available daily from Qantas Link. On arrival at Hervey Bay, hire a car for the 11-minute drive to Scarness, or utilize the local coaches.

• Hire a car at Brisbane, and Scarness is 3 hours 35 minutes / 290 kilometers to the north.

• Take the train from Brisbane airport to Maryborough. Though the train line no longer runs all the way into Hervey Bay and Scarness, an air-conditioned coach meets the train at Maryborough station for the run into Hervey Bay.

• If you take the train or coach into town, bicycles and motor scooters are for rent in many places, enabling you to easily make your way around town.

Enjoy your stay!

Toogoom Retreat Holiday house

5 of 5
What a fabulous place. Plenty of room for a couple of families, we had 5 adults and 5 kids with us on our stay and there was plenty of room. The kitchen is quite good with the way it is set out would love to have it at home. the bathroom is huge which was a plus, the only bad point with the house was that the en-suite toilet was a little on the small side. Launching and retrieving the boat from the boat ramp was very easy ( ours is 4.25m), you just have to watch the rocks in the creek there is plenty of them so take your time to learn the creek a little bit, stay to the north side of the creek in front of the houses, sand is softer then rock. The fishing was pretty good with plenty of yabby banks around. Plenty of crabs but just watch your pots as the current flow is pretty quick on the bigger tides. If your not into fishing, Hervey Bay is only 15 minutes drive down the road if you would like to do some shopping or just topping up on goods, Goodies pub is 2 k's down the road as well and does pretty good meals. I would take some drinking water with you as well, the house is on tank water, which is normally fine but it had a taint to it so we only used it after we boiled it, other wise i can not speak highly enough of the place and we will be coming back very soon. Enjoy your stay.
