Hit the Snow in Thredbo

Thredbo is situated just over 30 kilometres from the popular town of Jindabyne and is situated in the heart of the Snowy Mountains. In fact, this holiday destination is only about 6 kilometres from the highest peak in all of Australia, Mount Kosciuszko. This is a true resort town, and it is in operation all throughout the year. A winter wonderland even in the summer months, Thredbo has a superb artificial snow system that produces more than 600,000 cubic metres of snow in a single season. Off the slopes, there are plenty of outdoor adventures to keep naturalists busy, as well as in-town fun for kids and adults of all ages. Perhaps one of the best things about the town are breathtaking views from every angle. Even the holiday accommodation, which includes cabins, apartments and townhouses, benefits from beautiful mountain scenery.

Visit the Slopes

With Australia's longest trail runs, Thredbo is a premier destination for skiing and snowboarding. Of course, skiing instruction is available to novices. The mountainside features a number of trail options, all of which are clearly marked for the convenience and safety of visitors. Beginners are best suited for the 12-degree slopes of Friday Flat, while intermediate skiers have more options, with trails such as Walkabout, Ballroom, Playground, High Noon and Supertrail. Advanced riders are right at home in Thredbo, as well; this holiday destination boasts the longest and most vertical slopes of anywhere in Australia. To make accessing the trails easier, there are multiple chair lifts and even snow runners, which are like conveyor belts for people.

Other Winter Fun

In addition to the mountainside trails in Thredbo, there are a number of terrain parks to suit seasoned boarders and skiers. Riders are invited to try out the jumps, table tops and rails. During the winter, even the town is covered in snow at this resort town. As such, there is a vast open "play" area for kids and kids at heart. Free of charge, guests are invited to build snowmen, sled, toboggan, have a snowball fight and just generally enjoy the snow. For guests that need to get away from all the excitement of town, exploring the back country is a picturesque and serene option. All trips are guided to ensure the safety of guests, though the groups are small enough to let visitors be one with nature. Half- and full-day trips are available and reach destinations such as Dead Horse Gap, the Ramshead Range and Mount Kosciuszko.

Summer Activities Out in Nature

When the land thaws, the fun does not stop in Thredbo. Mountain biking is a popular way for holidaymakers to see the land. There are numerous courses available to riders, and all of the trails are clearly laid out and marked for safety. If you do not have your own equipment, no worries; this resort destination has plenty of bikes, helmets and pads for hire. Another way to see the Snowy Mountains is on foot. Many of the walks through the mountains are guided, though holidaymakers do have the option to venture out on their own. Long and short walks are offered, as are challenging and more laid-back options. Hiking to the top of the peaks gives a unique prospective over the landscape. Other popular activities just outside of town include fly fishing on the Thredbo River and bouldering, caving, abseiling and climbing throughout the region. All equipment is available for hire.

Excitement in the Heart of Thredbo

Those visitors that prefer more structured activities appreciate the flood-lit tennis courts and the AGU-rated golf course in Thredbo. Both locations offer affordable sport options and rugged mountain scenery. Families travelling with children appreciate the high range of child-friendly options in town. One of the most popular sites is the town's bobsled, which twists and turns down a 700-metre mountainside track. Thredbo's leisure centre provides heated indoor swimming pools and water fun, including slides and a floating obstacle. There are also a number of family-fun events and festivals throughout the year in this friendly holiday town.

Visit Thredbo

Filled with adventures of all types, delicious restaurants, welcoming bars and pubs and a great in-town scene with plenty of shopping establishments, there is something for everyone in Thredbo. While the summer and the winter months bring different types of fun, boredom is never an issue while in this premier resort destination.

Pulpo Granny Flat

4 of 5
I thought I'd put a review up so people booking the "Pulpo Granny Flat" knew what they were getting. We were a group of 3 males ranging in age from 30's to 50's visiting Thredbo for a mountain biking trip. We just needed somewhere cheap for 3 nights where secure bike storage was possible. The Pulpo Granny Flat was around 1/3rd the price of other apartments in Thredbo and had plenty of room to fit bikes either on the elevated concrete slab or in the main living room. It has a small kitchen where you could cook if needed. It is, in reality, the basement of the upper apartments with besser block walls, a floating floor fitted and a kitchen and bathroom. There is one bedroom with a double bed raised on the concrete foundation of the building and a single bed raised on a wooden frame. A sofa bed in the living area is the other sleeping option (I actually just put the mattress on the floor instead of unfolding and refolding the sofa bed every day). I'm not sure how it is heated and would be interested to see if it stays warm during winter. We were there in summer and temperatures were mild. There is no parking spot with the accommodation so you need to find parking in one of the free carparks and walk. If you're looking for luxury, then look elsewhere. If you're looking for a fairly cheap and perfectly functional place to shower and sleep for a few nights, then the granny flat was great (although one of our group was too tall for the shower and had to duck down to fit). The Pulpo Granny Flat was fine for 3 blokes on a bike trip but I probably wouldn't take my family there as it is a bit too "rustic".

Just perfect

5 of 5
We stayed at Three Bears #1 for a week over Christmas, mainly for the mountain biking. It really was just perfect for us. The house is clean and tastefully decorated, but not to a point where it doesn't feel like home. The beds and bed linen are heavenly! We didn't want for anything, it's very well equipped. It's a five minute walk to the chairlift, we're not hikers but thought whilst there it would be rude not to hike to the summit of Kosciusko. The DH mountain biking is fab, we rode the Flow trail and All Mountain Trail. Make sure you've got sunscreen, the sun, added to the wind at the top of the mountain, can catch you out, as it did me! Perhaps cover up on the summit hike. All in all we had a rad time.
